Reading time
Rome might just be our favourite city in Europe so it's doubly delicious that it also works so well for families. On our trips to Italy, you'll have access to superb guides who are experts in their fields - be that archaeology or history of art - but also in another key art; that of teaching children without them realising they're learning. Oh, and if the children are fans of Caroline Lawrence's brilliant Roman Mysteries novels (if not, they should be), about life in ancient Rome, they'll love visiting the real-life locations...
On My First Whistle...
Let battle commence at Gladiator School where the children are kitted out with authentic costumes (but fortunately not authentic swords!) before learning combat techniques and the gruesome history of Rome's gladiators.
Going Underground
The best way to scratch below Rome's surface - quite literally - is on a subterranean tour beneath the bustling streets. Your archaeologist guide will show the family ancient temples and houses that have spent 20 centuries being built over.
They All Scream For Ice Cream
Cultural immersion is about more than mere history; sampling the local cuisine absolutely counts too, so treat the children to sublime ice cream from Rome's finest gelatiera - II Gelato Di San Crispino. If you're feeling brave, why not offer up an artichoke or olive for sampling too - you never know!
Featured Hotel: Hotel de Russie
The Secret Garden at Hotel de Russie is perfect for games of hide and seek. Throw in the dedicated R Kids passports at check-in, a milk and cookies evening turndown service, children's menus and newspapers and this Rocco Forte gem is a family must-stay.
Italy is a holiday hotspot (for good reason), so our help in navigating the crowds is invaluable. From snapping up hard-to-come-by Vatican tickets (at the quietest times of day) to organising an archaeologist to guide you around Pompeii, our consultants have the insider intel to make your trip unforgettable. Stuck on where to stay? Our vetted accommodation options range from family-run ‘trullis’ in Puglia to big-name hotels in Venice.
