Jagged stone formations rising up swathed in a heavy mist, chunks of fragmented glaciers drifting eerily in a blue lagoon and bubbling hot springs breaking through cracks in the Earth’s crust are just a few examples of Iceland’s harsh,

Paris is the land of hard-and-fast kitchen etiquette, where skilled chefs come to invent, and foodie fans come to feast. But with 44,000 restaurants (119 of which proudly boast Michelin stars) jostling for the mouths of the city’s two million residents and 30 million annual tourists, deciding where to take the first bite can be the hardest part.

Culinary connoisseurs assemble, this one’s for you. If, like us, you spend the months, weeks and days before a holiday thinking about the smorgasbord of savoury and sweet treats that’ll pass your lips and waft beneath your nose from the second you arrive, you’re in the right place. Eating and holidays go hand in hand – literally. In fact, it seems almost criminal to walk around the winding cobbled alleyways of Bellagio without a gelato cone; or indeed tackle the sights and delights of Paris without a pastry and café au lait in each hand (à la Audrey Hepburn).

For Italians, food is very much seen as a way of life. Family recipes are passed down from generation to generation and each region boasts its own unique delicacies that the locals take immense pride in.

We love a city that's recovered its mojo, and Bordeaux has most certainly done so. The grand 18th-century boulevards and buildings - paid for by the proceeds of the wine industry - spent decades down at heel until a recent sense of urban renewal lured young entrepreneurs back. Now, with the arrival of a direct TGV high-speed link from Paris, the capital's Gallic 'ipsters may well also migrate to the west coast.

The joy of Cuban food Cuba changes fast.. I've just come back from my second trip to Cuba in as many years (lucky me!) and one of the things that really stood out this time was how good the Cuban food was - especially in a country famed for having some of the worst food around. The cape of good grape. Wine snobs love to differentiate between the wines of the old world - namely those of France, Italy, Spain, Germany etc and those of the new (and therefore, by definition, inferior) world.
