Cambodia off the Beaten Track

Cambodia off the Beaten Track

Southeast Asia is a favourite for first-time travellers – safe, welcoming and easy to explore. Yet all too often, Cambodia is the casualty of the Indochina loop, with many simply dropping in to see the (admittedly awe-inspiring) Angkor before moving swiftly on. On my first visit, I was guilty as charged. But my return visit changed everything. Cambodia, I realised, has come of age. It’s no longer the ‘add-on’ destination, but a country that demands time, rewards curiosity and offers depth, warmth and discovery at every turn.

Tom Holland's History of Travel in Egypt

This article originally featured in the first edition of our magazine, Original Traveller. The world’s first tourist destination; Egypt has attracted the great and the good for more than four millennia. Tom Holland charts the ebb and flow of the country’s time travel.   Egypt is where tourism began. Perhaps this is hardly surprising. By the 5th century BC, when the first tourist guide to Egypt was written, pharaonic civilisation was already more than two and a half millennia old.

Trips to Book a Year (or More) in Advance

Trips to Book a Year (or More) in Advance

When it comes to your holiday, a little planning goes a long way. Recently, we’ve noticed a pattern of both last-minute and long-term bookings, which we’ve named the Concertina Effect. But why are people booking so far in advance? Our co-founder, Tom Barber, thinks ‘anticication’ has something to do with it: ‘in uncertain times, planning something joyful far ahead becomes an act of hope’. Whether admiring cherry blossoms in Japan, celebrating the Holi festival in India, cruising down the Nile on the Steam Ship Sudan, or spotting gorillas in Uganda, some holidays require extra attention.

Use it or Lose it

Use it or Lose it

Every year, the same story plays out: employees in the UK let holiday days go to waste. One recent survey found that 65% of UK workers don’t use up their allowance – and a whopping 17% leave five or more days unclaimed. Another source concurs: in 2023, 61% of workers reported not using all of their annual leave. This is all especially galling when you compare us to our European neighbours. Across the EU, the average entitlement (including public holidays) is about 34 days per year, whereas in the UK, many of us are left with just 28 days.

Tuscany in Spring

Tuscany in Spring

Tuscany in spring represents the sweet spot of Italian seasons. Home to high-brow art and even higher-brow food, the ‘Cradle of the Renaissance’ offers a lesson in la dolce vita between March and May. The weather is warm enough to enjoy a gelato during a passeggiata (leisurely evening stroll), but not so toasty that you can't tuck into a hearty bowl of beef ragù pappardelle afterwards. Italy breaks in spring see nature awaken from its winter slumber, with wildflowers boldly announcing themselves across the Tuscan countryside and balmy breezes whispering through nascent grape vines.

Costa Rica in Spring

Costa Rica in Spring

Let’s be honest, a trip to Costa Rica will be epic at any time of the year, but spring is particularly good for discovering this Central American slice of paradise. March enjoys some of the country’s driest and warmest weather, April is still temperate, and May falls during Costa Rica’s shoulder season, which is another great time to visit. If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica in spring (and we really think you should),

How to Spend Winter in Sweden

How to Spend Winter in Sweden

Winter in Sweden seems as though it’s been plucked directly out of a Christmas fairytale. It’s a time when dog sledding through snow-covered pine forests is just your regular weekend hobby; exploring traditional Christmas markets in cosy, candle-lit cities is the go-to evening activity; and admiring the multicoloured glow of the Northern Lights is very possible. But we should make one thing clear (if it’s not already obvious):

Most Beautiful Places in Iceland

Most Beautiful Places in Iceland

It’s true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But when it comes to Iceland, there’s nothing subjective about it. For this is the land of frozen beaches, whimsical waterfalls and steaming cyan lagoons. It’s where artistic license was given permission to run wild and everyone chose to go with it – even astronauts, who once used the island’s lunar landscapes as their training grounds. So, you can imagine how difficult it was to choose its shiniest and brightest crown jewels.

Secret Things to do in Reykjavík

Secret Things to do in Reykjavík

Despite its small size and the fact it’s oh so far north, Reykjavik is overflowing with wonderful and wacky things to do, many of which are off the average tourist’s radar. The Lucky 13

The Lucky 13

The number 13 is typically associated with bad luck. Buildings are often constructed without a 13th floor; hotels, hospitals and airports (plus our boat the Steam Ship Sudan) avoid using the number on rooms or gates and Friday the 13th is considered the unluckiest day of the year. There’s even a medical term for the fear of the number 13 (triskaidekaphobia, in case you were wondering). But we have a newfound appreciation for the number because this week Conde Nast Traveler (the US version,

Best Markets in Sweden

Best Markets in Sweden

Markets in Sweden are a laid-back affair and we’re very much on board. From the gourmet food halls of Stockholm to the second-hand vintage bazaars of Gothenburg, there really is a market for everybody in the shopping haven of Sweden. Things to do in Central India

Things to do in Central India

Full of prowling tigers, green landscapes and enough waterfalls to make you totally ignore TLC’s advice, Central India is considered the country’s wildlife hub. India’s two central states, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, are always included in the definition of this otherwise loosely defined region, and are where you can experience the majority of the best things to do in Central India. While wildlife is Central India’s forte,

How To Spend Autumn in Sweden

How To Spend Autumn in Sweden

Because, well, autumn in Sweden really is quite inviting. The mad months of midsummer festivities and overcrowded beaches draw to a close and Swedes get back to what they’re best at:

Must-Sees in Gothenburg

Must-Sees in Gothenburg

Second cities often sit in the shadow of their capitals; much of the time, undeservedly. You’d think by now that the Barcelonas, Mumbais and Shanghais of the world would have shown us that sidekick cities offer just as much cultural clout as their big sisters. But alas, many are still left fighting for their fair share of tourist attention. And Sweden’s second-biggest urban hub, Gothenburg, is no exception.

When it comes to transport on an India holiday, the subcontinent isn’t short of options. Its one-and-a-half billion inhabitants navigate the nation by plane, train and automobile (and rickshaw, bike and metro). Many of the roads and throughfares are incredibly well-trodden, yet there are still sections of the country that remain untarnished by tourist crowds and can only be accessed by water. This is where boat trips come in.

Best Cities in Sweden

Best Cities in Sweden

Often overlooked in favour of the terracotta-bathed cities of southern Europe, the cosmopolitan metropolises of the Nordic north are finally getting the recognition they deserve. Our Favourite Things to do in Gothenburg

Our Favourite Things to do in Gothenburg

Gothenburg is to Stockholm what Stutterheim is to Fjällräven. Just as good – some may say even better – but less well known, and that’s exactly its allure. The country’s quintessential second city, it comes with all the charm, just without the crowds. Known for its environmental efforts (it’s been voted the world’s most sustainable destination three years on the trot), you’ll find you’re doing the planet a favour just by planning a trip here.

Things to do in Mumbai

Things to do in Mumbai

Mumbai is known by many names. Formerly called Bombay, the city was referred to as Kakamuchee and Galajunkja prior to the Middle Ages. More recent monikers (and affectionate nicknames) include the ‘City of Dreams’, the ‘Hollywood of India’, the ‘City of Seven Islands’ and the ‘Gateway of India’. The former two are nods to Mumbai’s role as the main centre of India’s booming Bollywood film industry, while the latter are references to its position across an archipelago, and its reputation as a booming financial hub.

Our Favourite Things to Do in Delhi

Our Favourite Things to Do in Delhi

Believe it or not, Delhi is made up of at least eight historical cities, each one constructed on or near the others. It’s perhaps then no surprise that when it comes to things to do in Delhi, the list is long enough to rival the neighbouring Yamuna River (the country’s longest tributary). From visits to historic sites like The Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb to souvenir shopping in markets like Rajiv Chowk and Chandni Chowk,

Reasons to Visit New York in Winter

Reasons to Visit New York in Winter

Hollywood can’t resist New York in winter, and neither can we. From Serendipity and You’ve Got Mail to the very apt Winter’s Tale, there is no denying that winter is New York’s season. Maybe it has something to do with Rockefeller’s iconic ice-skating rink (which, thankfully, likes to linger well into March) or Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve ball drop, or how brightly Central Park gleams after its first fall snow flurry.

Reasons to Visit Venice in Winter

Reasons to Visit Venice in Winter

An architectural masterpiece suspended across 118 islands in northern Italy’s Veneto region, Venice’s existence is a remarkable feat of both engineering and creativity. With canals replacing roads, the city became a major maritime power in the tenth century and a significant centre of art and architecture. Its popularity certainly hasn’t waned over the years and the summer sees the floating metropolis transform into a tourist trap, characterised by teeming campi (squares) and gondola-congested canals.

This vast and sprawling country has diversity and culture in every fold, with countless bazaars across every state. This makes trinket and souvenir sourcing even easier, which is why it’s time to ditch the clichés (we’re talking branded shot glasses, garish tea towels and fridge magnets) in favour of something new and more memorable.

New Year, New Travel Resolutions

New Year, New Travel Resolutions

Drink less, work out more. Scroll less, read more. Every year we set ourselves the same goals and every year they get canned by mid-January. And who can blame us? Cutting out all our vices during the bleakest month of the year? It’s a no from us. That’s why, when it comes to new year travel resolutions, we are full of indulgent optimism. For no other reason than the fact there is nothing more joyous than organising a holiday.

Whether you are exploring the frozen labyrinth-like waterways and bustling yuletide hubs in Stockholm or heading to Gotland’s medieval bubble for some ancient festive traditions and food, Christmas markets in Sweden are truly magical and will no doubt get you in the mood for a festive celebration or two.

Under the Radar: South America

Under the Radar: South America

Sparking a long-time love affair for most travellers, a single dose of South America’s heady adventure is seldom enough. With cities set at vertiginous heights, crumbling pre-Colombian sites, and Andean peaks dusted with icing-sugar snow, the continent sets the stage for all manner of escapades. Scattered across 12 sovereign states (and a number of territories), many of South America’s monuments and natural treasures have reached superstar status, rewarded with places in guidebooks worldwide and inscribed into UNESCO’s hall of fame.

Lights, Camera, LA: Best Views in Los Angeles

Lights, Camera, LA: Best Views in Los Angeles

The sights of Los Angeles are synonymous with stars. The sprawling streets of North Hollywood and Burbank are littered with them (literally), the flower-carpeted hillsides of Topanga and Fryman Canyon almost touch them, while the golden beach-backed Malibu mansions that house them are proof that dreams really can come true. Fortunately, Mother Nature and the city’s early forefathers understood the city’s assignment and gave Angelenos plenty of opportunities to ogle at their starry-eyed city.

Six Hidden Gems in Barcelona

Six Hidden Gems in Barcelona

Barcelona is a sprawling Gaudí and Art Nouveau masterpiece, painting its way across the coastline and basking in the Mediterranean sun. This metropolitan mecca has been wining, dining and inspiring tourists for generations, with its soul-stirring manmade wonders and tapas aplenty. Of course, with its urban beauty being so instantly recognisable, it’s easy to assume you’ve seen the best that this city has to offer, but under the surface there’s still so much to discover.

Things to do in Stockholm in Winter

Things to do in Stockholm in Winter

The Swedes call their capital ‘beauty on water’, but when winter hits and all freezes over, this Venice-esque city becomes an icy dreamscape and the very definition of a winter wonderland. Imagine crisp cold air, the crunch of snow beneath your feet and the early evening darkness illuminated by cosily lit windows. Stockholm’s labyrinth-like waterways become ice-skating hotspots and Christmas markets filled with traditional spiced glögg pop up across the city.

The Best Hikes in the Dolomites

The Best Hikes in the Dolomites

With dramatic peaks and sweeping trails, the Dolomites feel as if they were commissioned by set designers for the next James Bond. Roughly carved from Italy’s northern Alps, with sharp-toothed summits, plunging bottle-green valleys and storybook rifugi, or refuges, the Dolomites can’t help but exude Hollywood glamour. And just like our favourite British secret service agent, they too are able to go from ruggedly outdoorsy and perilous to almost unfathomably delicate and romantic in pretty much a single shot.

Best Treks in Morocco

Best Treks in Morocco

Nepal has Everest, Tanzania has Kilimanjaro, the USA has Denali and Western Europe has Mont Blanc. But avert your eyes south down Italy’s shapely leg, across the Mediterranean and over Tunisia, and you’ll find yourself in Morocco. A gateway to Africa, it is where balmy beaches merge into sun-scorched sand dunes and medieval medinas conceal secret streets and heady souqs. But it is its mountain ranges and the myriad trails that zigzag across them that are the country’s trump card.

Halloween Traditions Around the World

Halloween Traditions Around the World

The only festival to induce a Marmite reaction, Halloween – love it or loathe it – can’t be knocked. Around since the Iron Age, the hallowed holiday can be traced all the way back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. A celebration of all things supernatural, from bewitching bonfires and mystifying mythology to mischievous spirits and sacrifices, it remains one of the most historic and haunted holidays.

Varying shades of blush hues coat the buildings of India’s ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, as kaleidoscopic streets filled with bustling bazaars, welcoming locals and vivid colours form the city that makes up one of the three corners of the Golden Triangle (the other two being Delhi and Agra). As the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur sees ancient history and the modern innovations of a rising metropolis intertwine,

Hidden Gems in France

France’s legendary landmarks need no introduction, and if you’ve visited Paris’ Eiffel Tower, Versailles’ eponymous palace or Normandy’s Mont Saint-Michel, you may feel as though you’ve seen the best of the nation’s iconic offerings. Yet, one of the joys of a country as accomplished as France is that its accolades appear to be never-ending, with treasures concealed behind every corner. Skip the queues outside the Louvre and opt for the art galleries of Metz,

Bucket List Busters: Best Things to do in North America

Bucket List Busters: Best Things to do in North America

North America is big. Life is short. So big (and so short) in fact that even we’ve resolved that we won’t get to it all. But, to console ourselves, we’ve put our heads together to make a bucket list of its very best. From worldly wonders like the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls to the slightly more obscure Newfoundland – which, trust us, was found for good reason – the continent is a smorgasbord of striking natural and man-made sights.

Marathons Around the World

Marathons Around the World

For some, lacing up a pair of trainers and taking to the pavements is a daily ritual, with a marathon representing the ultimate form of accomplishment. Others prefer to occupy the role of cheerleader, watching from the side-lines and offering some much-needed moral support. Whichever sounds more up your street, why not plan a holiday around the run and use your rest time to explore a new place? From racing down New York’s iconic First Avenue and London’s Mall, to traversing the African savannah and Chilean Patagonia, marathon running can take you all over the world.

Things to do in Ubud

Things to do in Ubud

Few places can captivate travellers like the 17,000 islands that make up Indonesia, with the spiritual mecca of Bali the gem in the Indonesian crown. It’s a province that’s home to dramatic (and active) volcanoes and vegetation-rich landscapes woven with traditions that have spanned centuries. It’s easy to see why so many find themselves flocking to this paradise spot in search of something new and why so many gravitate to the town of Ubud.

Our Five Favourite Things to do in Nova Scotia

Our Five Favourite Things to do in Nova Scotia

With its lonely lighthouses, rugged islands and salt sprayed fishing villages, Nova Scotia ticks off every coastal cliché in the best possible way. This is the place to ramble along coast paths, feast on lobster, spot breaching whales and generally switch off and settle into seaside life. And while Canada’s second-smallest province may be dinky in size, there’s more than enough things to do in Nova Scotia to fill an entire itinerary.

Bucket List Busters - Best Things to do in Europe

Bucket List Busters - Best Things to do in Europe

Narrowing down the best things to do in Europe is a difficult task. Most European bucket lists are overflowing with adventures to be had and places to explore, as there is a seemingly infinite number of cultural wonders and natural gems that are just waiting to be discovered. The twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower, the great stone pillars of the Acropolis and the history-packed walls of the Colosseum have captured the attention of snap-happy tourists for years, but we want to dive deeper into Europe’s treasure trove to explore some of the lesser-known bucket-list-worthy experiences.

Gold Rush: Autumn in New England

Gold Rush: Autumn in New England

Pass the pumpkin spice latte, autumn is here. A season synonymous with plaid shirts, blanket scarves and signature Starbucks lattes, autumn has become the ultimate cosy cliché. Fortunately, the USA welcomes a good cliché with open arms. In New England, which, in a Cinderella-type move, sees September 1st as its cue to start its annual transformation to a crimson carpet, the season is almost deserving of national holiday status.

All Aboard: Cruise Sweden's West Coast

All Aboard: Cruise Sweden's West Coast

Stretching out to the North Sea from Gothenburg like a Pollock-style paint splash, Bohuslän, to put it simply, is West Sweden at its best. Characterised by rocky bluffs, craggy cliffs and islands peppered with striking Falun red boathouses, this 8,000-island-strong archipelago is where nature is encouraged to let loose. Skerries of Bohus granite – for which the islands get their name – radiate their orangey-pink hue, clusters of pine trees shade fjord-like lakes and glassy seas and shallow bays ripple and swirl as Scandinavian salmon and herring dart beneath.

Where to find the best souvenirs around the world

Where to find the best souvenirs around the world

When we say ‘souvenirs’, we aren’t talking about garish fridge magnets, stereotypical ‘I heart’ t-shirts or rubber ducks donned in traditional garb. Nor are we talking about tacky shot glasses, ever-smiling celebrity bobble heads or phallic bottle openers that are destined to live firmly at the back of a drawer. We are talking about the more weird and wonderful keepsakes, the unique items that prompt a heart-warming memory or a once-in-a-lifetime story.

Maldives or Mauritius: Indian Ocean Gems

The Maldives have long been considered the ultimate beachside bliss destination, with mirror-clear waters, sun-soaked beaches and diving dreamscapes. The battle between these Indian Ocean pearls promises to be a close one; Port Louis or Male, blissful beachside hotels or overwater bungalows, 'boulettes' (Mauritian Dim Sum) or 'gulha' (Maldivian dumplings).

Way Out Yonder: Best Small Towns in America

You need only have watched a couple of romantic comedies to know that there is something pretty special about America’s small towns. But even before Hollywood swooped in with its wide lens cameras and hot shot directors, America has long carried a torch for its historic hamlets, bucolic main streets and charming town squares. Because when you fall for America’s small towns, you fall hard. Whether it be the call of the Rocky Mountains,

Must Sees in Malta

Must Sees in Malta

Long overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of the Amalfi Coast and Balearic Islands, Malta – the tiny archipelago suspended between Sicily and North Africa – is finally getting its moment. And thanks to its authentic baroque architecture, intriguing cocktail of cultures and upsurge of eclectic bars, it has never looked more alluring. Laid back and low-key, this is a country that doesn’t like to brag.

A Finnish Summer Fling

Finland battles through bone-chilling winters with seemingly endless polar nights and frozen forests and lakes, meaning that when the sun does emerge above the snow and ice, Finns passionately celebrate the balmy evenings and lazy, hazy days. Few Brits make a beeline for Finland during its sweet summer season, but if immersing yourself in the great outdoors, enjoying peace and quiet in the wilderness and jumping into adrenaline-filled adventures is your thing, then you are bound to love it.

Bucket List Busters: Best Things to do in Asia

Bucket List Busters: Best Things to do in Asia

Deciding on what the best things to do in Asia are is akin to choosing whether to have a starter or a dessert at dinner – a near impossible task. Asia’s menu of a mouth-watering 49 countries does little to make the decision any easier either. Fortunately, we have a team of travel experts who have taken a bite from them all. Whether it be the celestial carvings of Cambodia’s Angkor Complex, the jungle-clad outcrops of Halong Bay or the holy waters of Varanasi, Asia truly has something for everyone.

Iceland vs. Norway: A Northern Hemisphere Knock Out

Iceland vs. Norway: A Northern Hemisphere Knock Out

With goosebump-inducing scenery, rocky Viking history and colourful cultures, Iceland and Norway share many similarities, but they are very different places when you dive in and take a closer look. With contrasting natural wonders, food, and cultural traditions, these Arctic adventure hubs are fighting for top spot. With volcanoes vs. fjords, fermented shark vs. sautéed reindeer and beer tölts vs. midsummer celebrations, there are certainly some weird and wonderful traditions and sights to think about when deciding where to head on your next icy escapade.

Croatia vs. Spain: Two Idyllic Holiday Destinations

Croatia vs. Spain: Two Idyllic Holiday Destinations

Spain has long been touted as the ideal summer holiday destination for Brits, with its heavy dose of seductive culture, pristine beaches and balmy temperatures. Yet Croatia’s arrival on the scene and growth in popularity has only served to complicate things when it comes to choosing a holiday destination. The country’s equally awe-inspiring landscapes, age-old architecture and world-class cuisine tempt travellers to the crescent-shaped country.

Experience the Overview Effect

Experience the Overview Effect

We’ve all seen footage of Earth from space – that humbling, faraway view of our little blue and green planet – but few of us Earthlings have experienced this phenomenon firsthand. It’s said that when astronauts go into orbit and look down on Mother Earth, they experience a life-changing sense of perspective and mental clarity, coined the ‘Overview Effect.’ Described as a cognitive shift in awareness after seeing our planet free of borders and boundaries, the Overview Effect is the uncanny sense of understanding the big picture.

Alternative Babymoon Ideas

Alternative Babymoon Ideas

A babymoon offers the chance to relax, reset and relish your final few moments of uninterrupted romance (at least for a few months). And while we understand the pull (and necessity) of a sleepy seaside escape to a secluded cove and hammock-heavy town, we don’t think babymoons should always have to start and end with a beach. Of course, if that’s what you’re after, we know just the places. But if, like us, you see a babymoon as the chance to finally take the holiday you said you always would, or go somewhere that, with a baby in tow, just doesn’t seem as appealing, we’ve got you covered.

The Most Beautiful Cities in France

The Most Beautiful Cities in France

French holidays are a serious matter. A thought shared by the country’s 90 million annual visitors and 68 million residents – 80 per cent of whom choose to holiday on home turf – France has long considered itself a holiday hot shot. And why shouldn’t it? After all, France hasn’t just perfected the ability to juggle its opulence (found in the plush palaces) with its twee (the Disneyesque villages of Colmar and Riquewihr), but has crafted a culture that still makes Francophiles weak at the knees.

Bucket List Busters: Unmissable Things to do in South America

Bucket List Busters: Unmissable Things to do in South America

Assembling a succinct bucket list of unmissable things to do in South America is near impossible. With a total of 12 sovereign states and a handful of territories, the list of places to visit and wonders to experience is never ending – you could spend a lifetime discovering them all. If you (sadly) don’t have all of the time in the world to explore, our travel experts have risen to the challenge and narrowed down the options.

Summer Holiday Ideas for Every Traveller

Summer Holiday Ideas for Every Traveller

British summers are notoriously… mercurial. One moment you’re enjoying a Pimm’s-fuelled picnic and complaining about the heat; the next, you’re digging out your raincoat and wellies and complaining about the rain. But maybe this summer will be different, we tell ourselves. Maybe it will be all record-breaking heatwaves (cue more complaining) and sunbathing in the garden. But maybe it won’t. That’s the problem.

Wonders of the World to Add to Your Bucket List

Wonders of the World to Add to Your Bucket List

Celebrating and commemorating incredible feats of human imagination and engineering, the original Seven Wonders of the World have been well-documented throughout history in travel guides, poetry and artwork. However, only one remains; the Great Pyramids of Giza which stand tall and proud at on the west bank of the Nile River and date all the way back to 2561 BCE. Consequently, the compilation of a more modern iteration of this list was initiated in the year 2000, with each of the ‘New Wonders of the World’ still firmly intact and begging to be added to your bucket list.

Bucket List Busters: Unmissable Things to do in Africa

Bucket List Busters: Unmissable Things to do in Africa

Whether you’re catching your breath after soaring over Victoria Falls in an open-sided helicopter, or holding it while watching a male lion saunter past your safari truck in the Mara, there is an almost endless list of things to do in Africa that will take your breath away and leave your bucket list brimming. With 54 countries filling Africa’s wild and varied lands, it is hard to narrow down the very best bucket list busters that the continent has to offer,

Reasons to Visit The Alps in Summer

Reasons to Visit The Alps in Summer

Once the ice thaws, the snow melts and the last few powder pros jet off home, the Alps change their tune. Queue a Disney-style montage of woodland animals emerging from cosy cocoons and meadows of wildflowers unfurling in the sun and you’ve got yourself the Alps in summer. From Switzerland’s Matterhorn Glacier Trail - which, for those opposed to too much change, will be relieved to know always has a smattering of snow on its peak - to the natural waterslides and frothy basins of Méribel that demand you to jump right in, the Alps are the ultimate destination for adventure aficionados.

An Interview with Tom Barber

An Interview with Tom Barber

As the co-founder of Original Travel back in 2003, Tom Barber is something of an expert when it comes to travel. Here he talks family holidays, flight-free trips and his favourite foodie haunts.     What do you consider yourself an expert in? I’m pretty well travelled, but I’m not nearly as much of a destination expert as the dedicated specialists in each of our regional teams. I guess my expertise is in a type of travel:

Famous New York Film Locations

Famous New York Film Locations

New York is one of those cities you think you know before you’ve even set foot in it. Thanks to John Travolta and The Bee Gees, we already know that Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge is where Saturday Night Fever starts, and Greenwich Village is the place to go for coffee – at least according to the cast of Friends. And while the city’s most decorated director, Martin Scorsese, made us all a little wary of the city’s taxi drivers in the seventies, he was also responsible for bringing the city’s long, varied and dynamic history to life (particularly where gangs are concerned).

History of Travel in Egypt

History of Travel in Egypt

The world’s first tourist destination, Egypt has attracted the great and the good for more than five millennia. 100 years after Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered and Egypt became an independent state, the fascination with this archeology aficionado’s paradise has not dwindled. It remains one of the top holiday destinations across the globe. Explore the history of this arid utopia with our deep-dive timeline,

The Ten Most Underrated European Cities

The Ten Most Underrated European Cities

Paris, Rome and Madrid need no introduction, with their legendary status firmly cementing their positions in history (and in all the top travel guides). Even these countries’ second cities – Marseille, Milan and Barcelona – are frequently touted as ‘must-sees’ and welcome their fair share of tourists every year. However, look a little further than these iconic citadels and you’ll find a whole host of lesser-known cities, which in our opinion are criminally underrated.

The Most Beautiful Cities in Spain

The Most Beautiful Cities in Spain

With its reputation for romance and passion, Spain’s culture, cuisine and traditions consistently surprise and delight visitors. Equally enchanting are the country’s varied landscapes and intriguing topography, ranging from rugged mountain-ranges and wild countryside to idyllic seaside towns and crystal blue ocean. But it’s Spain’s cities that deserve an honourable mention in the line-up of its highlights.

Kenya vs. Tanzania: No Wrong Choice

Kenya vs. Tanzania: No Wrong Choice

As both Kenya and Tanzania are brimming with wild and wondrous creatures, sun-drenched beaches and richly diverse cultures, it can be difficult to pick between the two, so we’re here to do our very best to help you decide. Tanzania may be one and a half times bigger than Kenya, but both have plenty to offer; on a Kenyan safari you may be lucky enough to see the last northern white rhinos or in Tanzania you could head up Mount Kilimanjaro for the trek of a lifetime.

Cambodia or Vietnam? A Seemingly Impossible Choice

Cambodia or Vietnam? A Seemingly Impossible Choice

Cambodia and Vietnam are both firm favourites among travellers of all ages, from those on a journey to explore the world’s greatest landmarks, to those on a culinary quest to find the tastiest dishes. With shared borders, cultures and recipes, deciding between these neighbours is a seemingly impossible task. Both countries have recently opened their borders to explorers once again, so now is the perfect time to tick off that tree-entwined temple or secluded sandy beach that has long been on your bucket list.

Romantically Unromantic - Our Favourite Unusual Getaways for Couples

Romantically Unromantic - Our Favourite Unusual Getaways for Couples

When it comes to romantic gestures, it’s all too easy to fall back on the clichés. Red roses, boxes of chocolate, a luxurious weekend away in an elegant European city. As our name ‘Original’ Travel suggests, we prefer to venture beyond the cliches – especially when it comes to couples holidays. Over the years, we've compiled a list of our favourite unusual experiences that are perfect for couples who want a romantic getaway with a few surprises in store.

Australia vs. New Zealand: Southern Hemisphere Showdown

Australia vs. New Zealand: Southern Hemisphere Showdown

Both outstanding holiday destinations in their own right, Australia and New Zealand are often likened to siblings or cousins given some of their cultural similarities and close geographical proximity. When it comes to sports, however, the two are frequent rivals and it’s often a close call as to which country will dominate on the cricket or rugby pitch. Choosing just one to travel to is an even closer call in our opinion,

Spain vs. Portugal : Which Holiday Destination Comes Out on Top?

Spain vs. Portugal : Which Holiday Destination Comes Out on Top?

Spain and Portugal are both firm favourites among UK travellers looking for a bit of summer sun, and for very good reason – they are home to some of Europe’s finest stretches of sand. These Iberian Peninsula countries have so much more to offer than just beach breaks though, and so we are going to pit them against each other and pick out the best of each country’s culture, scenery, food and more to help decide once and for all which of these European holiday hotspots comes out on top:

The Most Beautiful Villages in Provence

The Most Beautiful Villages in Provence

Flooded with sunshine and set between vineyards, the mountains and the Mediterranean, the villages scattered across the Provence countryside are overflowing with charm. From the coastal villages and Medieval architecture in the Var region, to the hilltop towns and lavender fields in the Luberon, below is our selection of the most beautiful villages in Provence… 1 Ménerbes This fortress village, set in the hills of the Luberon mountains,

Colombia vs. Ecuador: Battle of the Equatorial Empires

Colombia vs. Ecuador: Battle of the Equatorial Empires

Sharing a border, coastline and mountain-range, the similarities between Colombia and Ecuador make it challenging to choose just one as a holiday destination. Both countries have recently been removed from the restricted travel list, making now the perfect time to also cross them off your bucket list. The question is: which one first? Evenly matched in many respects, Colombia vs. Ecuador promises to be a close contest,

The Top Things to Do in the Basque Country

The Top Things to Do in the Basque Country

If you’re dreaming of rugged mountain hikes and luxury coastal restaurants, the south west of France has you covered. Nestled on the Atlantic coast, the Basque Country is a hidden gem packed with rich culture and gorgeous scenery. The fascinating and unique culture of the Basque people provides insight into a largely undiscovered community while maintaining the classic features of French and Spanish (Spain is only a two-hour drive away) traditions.

Deeper Cuts: The Second Cut is the Deepest

Deeper Cuts: The Second Cut is the Deepest

Cat Stevens, Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crowe may have all declared that the first cut is the deepest, but we at Original Travel are of the opinion that when it comes to visiting some of the classic destinations, the second cut goes a lot deeper. When returning to a beloved destination there's nothing better than discovering another layer of experiences and perspectives; which is made all the easier with our local Concierges, who are on the ground with insider tips.

The Perfect Couple - Guatemala and Belize Holidays

The Perfect Couple - Guatemala and Belize Holidays

Guatemala and Belize are two classic Central American destinations, and make for one of the best country combos on the Original Travel books.   Gum's the word When I visited Guatemala and Belize on a recent research trip, both exceeded expectations and I can see why they are such popular luxury holiday destinations. One particularly special place was Uaxactun in Guatemala, a small village and eponymous archaeological site about 45 minutes down a bumpy track from Tikal.

Supporting the British Forces Foundation

Supporting the British Forces Foundation

A fantastic day of polo in support of the British Forces Foundation... The British Forces Foundation motto is 'in the business of morale' - what a great philosophy. We're into building morale too, but not in such as benevolent a way - we were delighted to support their good cause last Saturday by providing four Original holidays as prizes for the winning polo team of a charity match.   The Commonwealth team won With the lure of a holiday spurring the players on, naturally the quality of play shot up!

If You've Got it, Haunt it - Our Must-Sees for a Fang-tastic Halloween...

As respectable adults, we are (sadly) considered too old by society to dress up as vampires and go door to door demanding Haribo. While this is desperately disappointing, the rise of 'dark tourism' means we can take your Halloween to the next level. So save the face paint for the kids and get your thrills by sinking your teeth into some of these spine-chilling experiences...   Bat Migration, Zambia One of the most jaw-dropping natural phenomenons, the bat migration across Zambia's Kasanka National Park is a truly dramatic sight to behold.

Introducing 'Around the World in Travel Stories'

Introducing 'Around the World in Travel Stories'

You know the moment on a holiday when you just think - 'THIS is what it's all about'. That moment when the stresses and strains of work and reality slip away and you truly feel you're away from it all?... We have chosen our favourite things from around the world.   Circumnavigating the globe Well, we at Original Travel have spent the last nine years circumnavigating the globe finding and experiencing just those sensations for ourselves, and now we've put them together into our inaugural 'Around the World in Travel Stories' list.

Luxury for Less

Luxury for Less

Here are some tips on how to achieve luxury for less, so you can get the best price tag for a beautiful holiday.   Off peak Travelling outside peak times will guarantee cheaper rates, you'll avoid the crowds, and there's even more chance to get a complimentary upgrade.

Rio de Janeiro in Style - The Copacabana Palace

Rio de Janeiro in Style - The Copacabana Palace

Looking for style, ease and glamour without over the top grandeur? Rio's your place...   Rio - Where to stay? Looking for style, ease and glamour without over the top grandeur, the 1920's Copacabana Palace was the hotel for me.   What a position! The Copacabana Palace balconies look out over palm trees that line the beach promenade, and across the blue water of Guanabara bay, blue sky above and white sails on the sea, spanned by the sensational bridge to the city of Niteroi.

My Adventures in Myanmar

My Adventures in Myanmar

Myanmar may have been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent times but looking beyond politics, this small-yet-mighty country has so much to offer. Not to mention that boycotting all travel to a country that relies so heavily on tourism would be disastrous for the vast majority of the innocent population. Creating itineraries is a major part of my job at Original Travel and I'll often find myself getting seriously wanderlust-y writing about all of the amazing things our clients will experience on their trips.

Discovering Dubai

Discovering Dubai

After having my reservations about the place - I was pleasantly impressed with what Dubai has to offer.   My journey... ...began like any good one should: with a glass of red wine and a comedy on an Emirates flight. Once I was off the plane I was greeted by a humidity I can only associate with some of my great travel memories. The first thing to do was head for a cocktail, naturally, at Souk Madinat - a shopping centre (and I use that word lightly) which appeared to have a Venice style canal running alongside some fine looking restaurants and bars.

Eight of the Best Alternative Destinations to Escape the Crowds

Eight of the Best Alternative Destinations to Escape the Crowds

Aspiring Undertourist and Original Travel content writer Ella Mawson picked the brains of our team of travel specialists and convinced them to reveal their favourite experiences and the best alternative destinations to escape the crowds.

Union with Réunion

Union with Réunion

A fun Réunion. We're just back from a research trip to Réunion, and it's fab. A former French colony, this tiny Indian Ocean island is a half hour hop from the 'fly and flop' classic that is Mauritius. While her neighbour is all about immaculate beachfront hotels, Réunion is more about the island itself.   Alive and spouting 500 miles east of Madagascar, Réunion is dictionary definition verdant, with every inland inch sprouting something green.

Beijing Attractions, Tiantan Park

Beijing Attractions, Tiantan Park

The massed ranks of humanity that inhabit China's cities now number a staggering 622 million people. Venture on to the streets of Beijing at rush hour and it can feel like the vast majority of them are out and about at the same time.   People's Parks It all goes a long way towards explaining the special place that Renmin (People's) Parks hold in the hearts of urban Chinese. These tranquil oases act as the lungs of China's increasingly polluted metropoli, but serve a more important function still, best viewed - and understood - at dawn.

Exploring Dubrovnik's Old Town

Exploring Dubrovnik's Old Town

Just a couple of steps in and already you feel like you stepped back in time! A UNESCO world heritage site filled with steep alley stairways and marching guards; just a handful of things which make Dubrovnik's Old Town so special.   ""What can you do in the Old Town?"" I hear you cry Most of you will recognise Dubrovnik from the Game of Thrones series and although it looks like it's just full of old buildings and cool selfie opportunities,

Get Creative in Copenhagen

Get Creative in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is undoubtedly one of the most eco-minded and creative cities in Northern Europe, and I was delighted by its many and surprising contrasts. It's not an overstatement to say that it offers everything - and the best thing about the city is that all the sights are within mere streets of each other.   On yer Bike... Moving around Copenhagen feels like you're constantly stepping into a different era.

Six Reasons Why We Should All Go to China Right Now

Six Reasons Why We Should All Go to China Right Now

China is a fascinating country in which to travel. However, I am not going to lie and say it will ever be my favourite destination; it is a tough country to travel in. There were times that I absolutely loved it and others when I was wondering what on earth I was doing there. However, I do think it is somewhere that everyone should travel to at least once. As one of the world's largest countries, it isn't somewhere that you can see all in one trip, but you should go soon as some of the history and culture is being lost to Western modernisation.

Nicaragua: Under-rated but Utterly Enchanting

Nicaragua: Under-rated but Utterly Enchanting

How much do you know about Nicaragua? This little gem of a destination (well, it's actually the biggest central American country) is oft-overlooked as a holiday destination when placed next to the big boys of Latin America - Brazil, Argentina, Mexico. Nicaragua was my first venture outside Europe and, although I've travelled a lot since, still holds a special place in my heart. This incredible country is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes you could hope to find, not to mention some of the most welcoming people and a history that'll knock your socks off.

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

A plateau palace carved into the rock... Rulers have long built imposing palaces to intimidate their subjects and terrify their enemies (two not always mutually exclusive parties), but few can have achieved the desired effect to the extent of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka.   Into the lion's den... This vast solitary rock plateau rises, almost sheer, 1,000 foot from the surrounding plains, and was the 5th century seat of power of one King Kassapa.

Aya Sofia, Istanbul

Aya Sofia, Istanbul

The church that 'changed the history of architecture.' In this day and age 'Byzantine' might be a - pretty unflattering - by-word for murky political machinations coated in a thick layer of intrigue, but the former Eastern Roman Empire of Byzantium, run from the capital Constantinople, was one of the most important empires in history, lasting for over a thousand years.   The heart of the city Today, the fact that this was - alongside Rome - one of the great centres of Christianity tends to be overlooked as we marvel at Istanbul, a thoroughly modern Muslim city.

Pak Ou Caves, Laos

Pak Ou Caves, Laos

Mystical caves full of carved buddhas... Laos is no longer the secret destination it once was, but still receives far fewer visitors than illustrious neighbours such as Thailand and Vietnam.   Hang in Luang The undeniable highlight of a trip to Laos is a stay in Luang Prabang, famed for its many temples, a wonderfully laid back atmosphere and the traditional early morning donation of alms to the city's population of monks.

St Anton Austria

St Anton Austria

The ultimate in off piste. St. Anton, Austria's flagship resort, ranks among the very best ski resorts in the world. Better suited to intermediate or advanced skiers rather than beginners, the resort is known for its legendary off-piste and even more legendary après-ski scene.   'Off the back' To the former, first. There is plenty of 'off the back' skiing to be had but the classic itinerary is the Valluga North Face descent into the neighbouring resort of Zürs.

Huayna Picchu, Peru

Huayna Picchu, Peru

An original take on a classic view... Huayna Picchu - 'Young Peak' in native Quecha - is the mountain that towers behind the citadel of Machu Picchu in the classic shot of this iconic destination. Few tourists know that it's also possible to climb the steep rocky path to the top to see Macchu from a completely different perspective. The peak of Huayna Picchu is 1,180 ft higher than Machu Picchu, and access to the sacred summit is controlled by a guard in a kiosk behind the Sacred Rock.

Things to do in Gozo, Village festas

Things to do in Gozo, Village festas

Big bang fact, not theory... According to legend, Odysseus fell under the seven-year spell of the sea-nymph Calypso on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. Nowadays the smaller sister island of Malta basks in relative anonymity, and diving and spas have replaced sea-nymphs as the main lures for travellers.   Glastonbury it's not... The diving is regarded as the best in the Med, while the Kempinski san Lawrenz hotel has, arguably (and pretty randomly), the finest Ayurvedic spa outside the Indian subcontinent, but for us at OT the highlight is the island festival season each summer.

U Bein Bridge, Lake Inle at Sunset

U Bein Bridge, Lake Inle at Sunset

The ultimate photo opportunity. Burma is back, and Inle Lake is a very tranquil and relaxing spot after the hustle and bustle of the cities of Mandalay and Rangoon.   Stilts and leg-rowers There are several villages inhabited by the local Intha people built on stilts actually over the lake and you can see the elegant leg-rowing fishermen in action, and floating gardens built up from strips of water hyacinth and mud anchored to the bottom with bamboo poles.

Paragliding into Six Senses Zighy Bay

Paragliding into Six Senses Zighy Bay

What a way to arrive. Competition in the hotel business is cut-throat, and properties are coming up with ever more outlandish ways to earn a few lines of coverage in the press or to generate conversation. The Maldives has gone with the whole underwater theme - first there was the underwater spa, the first underwater restaurant, and now an underwater club is coming soon.   Six Senses Zighy Bay How to up the ante again?

Our Top Six Cities Around the World

Our Top Six Cities Around the World

When asked to picture their perfect holiday, many people's minds immediately hit the beach; warm white sand between the toes, sparkling azure waters and someone rather good-looking fanning you with a large palm leaf. And who are we to deny such glories? But here at Original Travel we're also partial to something a little more... rousing. That is to say we love a good city. Oh yes, we rub our hands together in veritable glee at the prospect of bustling markets, burgeoning foodie scenes, street art, botanical gardens, booming nightlife and incredible architecture.

Albania: Land of Eagles

Albania: Land of Eagles

Following on from Original Travel expert Sam's trip to Macedonia, she visited Albania. These are her thoughts on the up-and-coming Eastern European escape.   Albania: Land of the Eagles ""There's three things in Albania we do in freestyle way.....that's the driving, the partying and the building!"" grins Klodi, our guide, as another road-user skims past us on the steeply winding road. We're taking the full and immediate immersion route into Albania, through the southern mountains, having crossed the border from Macedonia earlier in the morning.

10 Year Anniversary for Original Travel

10 Year Anniversary for Original Travel

Original Travel Turns 10! Once upon a time... Our story began back in 2003; a classic 'three friends in a spare bedroom' scenario. The three co-founders Alastair Poulain, Nick Newbury and Tom Barber spotted a niche in the travel industry for high quality short breaks requiring minimal time off work but offering maximum experience. Using their knowledge and passion for travel, the three came up with a portfolio of action-packed long weekends to original destinations, and The Big Short Break was born.

Our Top 10 New Year Holidays and Getaways

We, at Original Travel, think that New Year's Eve should be spent revelling in all those things you intend to give up the next day. Why not escape that dreaded New Year's party,

Tradition Meets Glamour in St Moritz Switzerland

Tradition Meets Glamour in St Moritz Switzerland

As first research trips go...   Want to bet? In the summer of 1864 Johannes Badrutt, owner of the Kulm in St Moritz, Switzerland, grew disappointed his hotel was full only for the spring and summer months. He decided to challenge five of his guests to a bet. The guests were well connected English gentlemen whom Badrutt promised free lodging if, after a winter's stay they did not want to return for next year's snowfall.

A Meander Through Macedonia

A Meander Through Macedonia

It's an understatement to say that Macedonian identity is a complex and ongoing issue; some of its neighbours even continue to question its right to use the name. Nevertheless, Macedonians remain positive about their future and the country has plenty to offer the interested traveller.   A meander through Macedonia That said, no-one would travel to Macedonia simply for the purpose of seeing Skopje but it's worth an hour's wander as you pass through.

Moroc-go! Off the Beaten Track Highlights of Southern Morocco

A holiday to Morocco brings to mind reams of exotic images... browsing colourful souqs in the bustling streets of Marrakech, rejuvenating yourself at a Hammam spa, and tucking into a tasty tagine for tea. However, sometimes the most beautiful, romantic spots are found when you head off the beaten track. Enter: Southern Morocco. Enriched with culture, history, and awe-inspiring views, this lesser trod part of Morocco is packed full of promise.

Douro River Cruises: A Royal Treat

Douro River Cruises: A Royal Treat

Following the arrival of the royal baby (!), it would appear that young George Alexander has already got global fascination and a wealth of admirers. Lucky him! With the nation going mad, I thought I would jump on the band wagon. This is where the celebration of the royal baby gets a little different... Forget a street party or dressing up in a Union Jack something-or-other. Instead, celebrate by treating yourself to a trip away somewhere.

Once in a Lifetime Experiences

Once in a Lifetime Experiences

Planet Earth plays host to some seriously epic events. There are those that happen every year, such as Holi Festival (the world's most colourful celebration) and the Great Wildebeest Migration through Tanzania and Kenya (the largest overland migration in the world). And then there are the Once in a Lifetime events, the experiences that are only available for a limited amount of time, like a solar eclipse or the transformation of Venice from a tourist-trap to a tourist-free destination in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spanish Retreat: SHA Wellness Clinic

Spanish Retreat: SHA Wellness Clinic

SHA wellness clinic is the perfect place to relax, be pampered and unwind...   360 days of sunshine After a two hour flight to Alicante and a short drive to SHA Wellness Clinic we arrived. The sun was shining, bright blue skies and the first thing my driver tells me is that the sun shines 360 days of the year - I believed him, I went in February and it was glorious.   Images of package holidays To most people, and rightly so, Alicante and Benidorm conjure up images of packed, package holidays.

Portugal's Southern Powerhouses: the Algarve and the Alentejo

Home to the oldest bookshop in the world, Portugal sets the scene for you to create your own story with its abundance of possibilities for sun-seekers, sailors, surfers and loafers alike. The Algarve and the Alentejo, both in the south of the country, are two of Original Travel's favourite Portuguese holiday destinations; both are home to the obligatory beautiful beaches but there's plenty more to explore besides.

The Best of Verbier

The Best of Verbier

The focal point of the huge Four Valleys ski area in Switzerland, Verbier might just be the perfect all-round Alpine ski resort. Sure, St Anton wins - just - in the après-ski stakes, Zermatt might be (even) prettier and Chamonix has the ultimate gnarly off-piste action, but Verbier delivers for anyone wanting extreme skiing plus extremely hard partying and extremely comfortable accommodation in beautiful surroundings.

Portugal is prized among travellers for its authenticity and simplicity. Head south for a short break or a longer holiday. Ontario Islands: the land of 1865 islands

Between Toronto and Montreal is a part of Canada known for its particular beauty : the 'Thousand Islands' region. These Ontario islands 'float' on the St. Lawrence River.   Most people visit in May and June, when spring springs. Soft green linden trees and maples bloom, and bouquets of hyacinth and lilacs float on the waters of the St. Lawrence River, which is finally clear of the last traces of winter ice.

Rome vs Florence: The Battle of the Italian Cities

Rome vs Florence: The Battle of the Italian Cities

The days of the Grand Tour may have passed, but 60 million people enjoyed trips to Italy in 2017, and you can bet that a significant chunk of them (according to a very scientific straw poll at Original Travel HQ) visited Florence or Rome, or both. Since both cities are prime Big Short Break territory and Original Travel is nothing if not a gaggle of Italophiles, it seems only right that we pit the two cities against one another and see who emerges the victor.

Puglia - Italy's Hidden Gem

Not to mention that it sees nowhere near the number of tourists. Sounds perfect, no?   Landscape The

Ice Ice Baby! Why You Should Spend Summer in Iceland

Ice Ice Baby! Why You Should Spend Summer in Iceland

One of our Europe specialists spent their summer holiday in Iceland. What was it that convinced them to swap their typical (and much loved) beach holiday for a week in a country that includes the word ice in its name? At first, it was the draw of seeing glaciers, active volcanoes, whales, puffins and steaming natural hot pools. But once they arrived, it became clear why a trip 'North of the Wall' during the summertime is such a good idea.

Travel by Colour: our Top Five Destinations in Latin America

Travel by Colour: our Top Five Destinations in Latin America

Latin America is a region of many characters; football is practically a religion; the steak is the best in the world (and the only vegetarian item you're likely to find on the menu is a mojito) and the jeans are very, very tight. It's also a continent awash with colour - from bright woven textiles that hark back to indigenous populations to lush tropical flora and fauna. Travelling to Latin America means experiencing something of an optical assault by Planet Earth's very own mind-blowing colour wheel.

Discovering the New and Improved Colombia

Discovering the New and Improved Colombia

Colombia - an absolute whopper of a country both geographically speaking (although it's no Brazil) and in terms of its diversity. It may forever remain synonymous with one particular resident (thanks, Narcos), however, on my trip to this colourful (in more ways than one) country I discovered that there's so much more to this South American gem...   Overcoming Past Stereotypes With the current popularity of Netflix's Narcos series documenting (albeit slightly embellished) the drug cartels of Medellin and Cali in the 80s and 90s, I wasn't sure what to expect on my recent trip to Colombia.

My Top Five Thailand Experiences: Phuket and Bangkok

My Top Five Thailand Experiences: Phuket and Bangkok

Having previously been to Thailand twice before, I presumed that I had already experienced most of what the country has to offer. However, on my recent trip to the self-claimed 'nation of smiles', my presumptions were proved highly incorrect (as most often they are). I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is a plethora of authentic experiences to enjoy both in Phuket, Thailand's largest island whose history in international trade has impacted the its interesting culture hugely, and the capital city of Bangkok with its incredible food scene evolving every day.

The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria

The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria

When heading on my two-week holiday to Italy, exploring cities including Florence, Rome, Venice and Bologna, I did not think that the rural area of Umbria would be the region that became my highlight. As the sea and the beach are usually my top priorities when going on a holiday, I was surprised how quickly I fell in love with the land-locked region of Umbria. But the medieval hilltop towns, picturesque rolling countryside, authentic and historic culture, food and people completely compensated for the lack of sand and won over my beach-loving heart instantly.

Exploring Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

Exploring Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

South East Asia is well known for its jagged karst landscapes, and many people will recognise images of the vertiginous peaks rising from the sea at Krabi and Halong Bay, or the wonderful limestone formations around Vang Vieng in Laos. But while these destinations share fabulous scenery, they also have a less appealing common feature - the presence of mass tourism. Head three hours inland from Krabi in Thailand and the scenery remains impressive while the crowds thin to almost nothing.

Part Two of My Italian Odyssey: Emilia Romagna and Rome

My time in the beautifully glamorous Italian Lakes and Tuscany, detailed in Part One of My Italian Odyssey: The Lakes and Tuscany, had sadly come to an end and it was time to pull myself away and 'solidier' on through my Italian road trip on to the seriously under-rated Emilia Romagna followed by the timeless Rome, and boy did my stomach get one treat after the other..!   Emilia Romagna...Food, Glorious, Food!

80 Senses: #23 - Pulling 5G, the Lillehammer Bobsleigh Track

Experience a sensation usually reserved for Formula 1 drivers and fighter pilots... Scaring yourself silly is not one of the official 80 Senses categories, but the sensation of hurtling along the ice in a tin torpedo is definitely one we recommend.   Lillehammer in Norway hosted the Winter Olympics in 1994, when Eddie the Eagle bestowed such sporting pride on the nation. Not that anyone remembers, but the real stars of the show from a British perspective were actually the bobsleigh team, who finished a highly creditable fifth and went on to claim a bronze four years later in Nagano.

Despite being wonderfully wild, it is also home to some great properties which make a visit perfect for those after something comfortable but adventurous.

Collective Nouns and Where to Find Them

'I' definitely does not always come before 'E' except after 'C' (just go to Iceland and see some 'glaciers') and you may want to 'warn' people about your 'worn' jeans (you may even shed a tear over the tear). The English language is full of quirks - words that sound the same but can be spelled differently, and words with the same sound and spelling but different meanings. Ah yes, for a language we expect the rest of the world to speak, we may not have made it the easiest.

My First Trip to Panama

Pool with a view. The Brits have long had a penchant for port, but the vineyards where the fortified wine is created and the eponymous city of Porto are, in themselves, a delight. Wander at will Portugal's second city, Porto is a gem that is largely free from the tourist hordes. Best Experiences in San Francisco

Best Experiences in San Francisco

At first glance Frisco is a city without a clear narrative, swinging from late 19th Century Gold Rush greed to flowers in your hair hippie free love and now home to techpreneurs from Twitter to Instagram. What's the common theme? An over-riding sense of what might be possible when groups of like-minded individuals put their minds to something. It's this vibe that has attracted so many migrants over the years, and what makes this one of the most uplifting places in the world and a top-notch USA holiday destination.

Cities, Coastline, and Central Andalucía: Part II of My Trip to Southern Spain

Seville is not the only city of spectacle in this corner of Spain, and a road trip around Southern Spain is definitely not to be sniffed at. Cordoba (best visited during the 'Battle of the Flowers') and Granada (of Alhambra fame) make for a wonderful combination of Southern Spain's highlights and as ever our little black book of guides and things to do, see and eat should make exploring them seamless.

Floating harbours, wonderous opera houses and incredible wildlife...To recover from those days and nights in Rio, we relaxed on the long seven hour flight to the Amazon city of Manaus, 1,500 km from the sea and a major port in Brazil (Brazil is the size of Europe).   Manaus, just extra-ordinary 1,500 kilometres from the ocean, and the second biggest port of Brazil. Five Experiences Unique to Sri Lanka

Five Experiences Unique to Sri Lanka

For an island that's approximately four times smaller than the UK, Sri Lanka packs quite the punch with a huge diversity of landscapes; from Ceylon tea blanketing rolling hills and mountainsides to national parks which are home to the highest density of leopards on earth (with 40 believed to roam in Yala), and beautiful golden beaches sprinkled with surfers and sun seekers in-the-know. And, the teardrop-shaped country happens to also be home to equally unique and diverse experiences.

The Best of Mexico City

The Best of Mexico City

¡Bienvenido a Mexico City! Formerly known as DF (distrito federal) for the past two centuries, Mexico's capital changed its official name last year and is now known as Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX). Once centre of the Aztec Empire, latter day CDMX (catchier than one-time Tenochtitlan) sits gritty at 6,500ft above sea level, which may account for the light-headedness encountered by many new arrivals. Late Summer Sun on the Turkish Coast

Late Summer Sun on the Turkish Coast

It's safe to say that the 'wellness' trend has slightly taken over the world of late, and while we're certainly not opposed to a detox-style holiday, we're also partial to a slightly more indulgent one. In the spirit of inclusion, we say why not do both with a 'detox-retox' holiday? After a recent trip to Turkey in October for some late summer sun, our marketing guru Emily believes that the Aegean Coast might just be the perfect spot.

The last and only time I'd been before my recent trip was a university holiday to the island of Ios that made the first In-Betweeners movie look like a brass-rubbing coach tour of Norfolk churches (hedonistic as they no doubt are). We got not a whiff of culture and not a sniff of what makes Greece the cradle of western civilisation. So like I said, unfinished business, with maybe just a touch of unfinished pleasure in there for good measure, and what better excuse to make up for years of lost opportunities than on my 10th wedding anniversary.

Winter Sun-spiration

Winter Sun-spiration

True 'Britishness' is surely defined by our love of discussing the weather and, in particular, why the sun isn't shining. It's no surprise then that studies continue to show that we Brits are increasingly suffering from a lack of Vitamin D. The answer? Escape to sunnier climes, of course. With that in mind and winter just around the corner, the Original Travel team has canvassed the globe, studied the Campbell-Stokes recorder and had a hearty discussion about something called evapotranspiration.

Woman Up - Our Best Destinations for Female Solo Travel

When it comes to travel, flying solo can be an incredibly liberating experience. With no travelling companions to cater to, you're free to craft the holiday you've always dreamt of whether you're after a slick city getaway, an adventurous escape or an idyllic island-hopping trip. Travelling on your own can also be incredibly daunting, however, especially since some countries have different rules and customs for women than those we are accustomed to.

New York and Kauai: The perfect Yin and Yang Combo

New York and Kauai: The perfect Yin and Yang Combo

I have come to the conclusion that I am a tad Yin and Yang. I adore the city but I also thrive on country life. I travel extensively but I also find happiness with my home comforts. I explore the new but always return to my favourites - which is probably why I love visiting contrasting destinations on holiday. With one, you appreciate the other, and this duality is one of the reasons I strongly recommend combining the ever bustling New York City with one of the most beautiful and remote islands on Earth, Kauai in Hawaii.

Well, if it had slipped your mind (temporarily, of course) then fear not because there's still time to plan a romantic getaway (a.k.a the aforementioned perfect gift).

Tailor made holidays to Vancouver, Canada, are always a good call: the region boasts some of the most beautiful scenery you'll ever experience, and has more to offer than meets the eye...   Working in travel has its perks I've been lucky enough to sleep under the stars in the Moroccan desert and dog sled through the virgin snow in Swedish Lapland. They say you're not supposed to have favourites, but we have to admit to a few, and Sweden is most certainly one. Because this is a country that's got the lot - chic culture-filled cities, wild hinterland and a gorgeous coastline that just demands exploring.
