Street photography is a great way to get under the skin of a city. Finding the people and places that define a destination, and capturing the essence of everyday life - from the simple to the sublime - are just some of the elements that make it such a popular pastime. So, in no particular order, let’s take a cross-continental trip to ten of the best cities for street photography. Whether you’re a pro photographer or an amateur snapper, you’ll need an extra memory card or two to capture the beauty of these picture-perfect locations.
1
Morocco
Prepare to be enchanted by the vivid colours of Marrakech. This city is sensory overload, with its bustling souqs, intricate architecture and lively street performers. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of narrow alleys and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Spice vendors make great street subjects with their rainbow of perfectly stacked seasonings towering impossibly above their stalls. From the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa Square to the tranquil Majorelle Garden, Marrakech offers a wealth of photographic gold at every turn.

Japan
This city never fails to inspire with its neon signs, futuristic architecture and fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. From the iconic Shibuya Crossing to the narrow alleys of Shinjuku, Tokyo offers endless opportunities for capturing the essence of urban life in Japan. Don’t forget to explore the traditional neighbourhoods of Asakusa and Yanaka, where you’ll find ancient temples, bustling markets and locals going about their daily routines.
3
India
India in general is a street photographer’s delight, but Mumbai is the jewel in the crown. Bazaars and temples, colonial architecture and soaring skyscrapers, bay promenades and fishing villages, Asia’s biggest slums and Bollywood stars’ glamorous homes, there isn’t anything Mumbai doesn’t have. Capture the morning light on Marine Drive, then head to Dhobi Ghat’s famous outdoor laundry to snap the long lines of clean clothes, before making your way to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai’s main railway station. Better known as CST, this UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts plenty of photographers for its Gothic-revival architecture.
4
France
Any list of the best cities for street photography is sure to feature Paris (it’s known as the City of Light for good reason). The streets are lined with photographic opportunities, from chic fashionistas riding bicycles to boulangeries filled with baguette-ordering locals. Its iconic landmarks, impressive architecture and diverse culture combine to make it one of the best places in the world to shoot street images. Known as a hip, historic and generally laidback part of Paris, Le Marais is the perfect place to wander. You’ll be snap happy all day long.
5
Portugal
While Lisbon, Portugal’s stunning capital, is known for its gorgeous buildings, cobbled streets and old-world charm, many visitors don’t realise that the city is, in fact, a fabulous street photography destination too. Art is everywhere. And the architecture is pretty mind-blowing too, from the Moorish-era tiles that lend texture and sophistication to every façade to the super-sleek contemporary constructions in the centre. And there are so many characters on the streets of Lisbon, it’s a treat to just walk about and observe.

Turkey
Prepare to be transported to a world where east meets west. Istanbul is such a treasure trove of architectural wonders, energetic markets and rich history that it needs two continents to contain it. Explore the narrow streets of the historic Sultanahmet district, where you’ll find iconic landmarks like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. And be sure to visit the vibrant areas of Beyoglu and Kadikoy, to capture colourful street art, vibrant stalls and locals going about their daily lives.
7
Brazil
Next on the list of street photography GOATs is Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s flagship beautiful and bustling urban jungle where you can swap ‘street’ for ‘shore’. Beach culture rules and photographic opportunities lie around every corner (or cove). Be it the characterful beach vendors selling their wares or Pelé wannabes showing off their skills, Rio isn’t short on great street photography spots. Some amazing images can be captured in the favelas too, just make sure you go on a professional, well-organised tour.
8
USA
No list of the best cities for street photography would be complete without mentioning the Big Apple. New York City is a favourite among street snappers for good reason. The city that never sleeps is a melting pot of cultures and its streets are a constant source of inspiration. From the iconic landmarks like Times Square and Central Park to the diverse neighbourhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, there’s never a dull moment. Capture the energy of the city, the hustle and bustle of the streets and the unique characters that call New York home.

Southeast Asia is a favourite for first-time travellers – safe, welcoming and easy to explore. Yet all too often, Cambodia is the casualty of the Indochina loop, with many simply dropping in to see the (admittedly awe-inspiring) Angkor before moving swiftly on. On my first visit, I was guilty as charged. But my return visit changed everything. Cambodia, I realised, has come of age. It’s no longer the ‘add-on’ destination, but a country that demands time, rewards curiosity and offers depth, warmth and discovery at every turn.

This article originally featured in the first edition of our magazine, Original Traveller. The world’s first tourist destination; Egypt has attracted the great and the good for more than four millennia. Tom Holland charts the ebb and flow of the country’s time travel. Egypt is where tourism began. Perhaps this is hardly surprising. By the 5th century BC, when the first tourist guide to Egypt was written, pharaonic civilisation was already more than two and a half millennia old.

For those of us who don’t have to adhere to the constraints of the school holidays, we have a wide choice when it comes to choosing what season to travel in. Though the summer remains a top choice, thanks to the good weather across much of the Northern Hemisphere and the general societal norm of treating ourselves to a break at this time, the so-called ‘shoulder season’ is becoming ever-more popular.
