October tends to have more of a reputation for pumpkin-spiced lattes and knitted jumpers than sunny European holidays, but we’re here to change that. As tempting as it is to romanticise autumn and embrace all things cosy, Southern Europe’s gloriously warm forecast makes a very compelling case for one last escape to the sun. From Crete’s crystal-clear waters to Cyprus’ rolling wine country, there’s plenty of destinations to top up your vitamin D reserves before winter well and truly starts to bite. Hold off rummaging through your wardrobe for your scarves and mittens just yet; Crete is still firmly in shorts-and-t-shirts territory. Better yet, as Greece’s largest island, there’s plenty of coastline to go around, and with the summer crowds long gone, you’ll have much of it to yourselves.
In October, Crete boasts wonderfully warm waters, but with a much smaller flotilla of tourist boats on the horizon. That leaves plenty of elbow room to paddleboard across the azure bays of Agios Nikolaos, windsurf in in Palekastro or set sail to the castaway islets of Chrissi and Mikronisi. And with calmer seas in October, you can enjoy the shimmering views from the water, rather than battle a bout of seasickness.

In Izzy's opinion, Cyprus is one of the best options for hot places in Europe in October, especially if your idea of heaven involves a little history, a lot of sunshine and the occasional afternoon tipple... From Paphos’s mosaic-embellished streets to Larnaca’s abundance of museums, there’s plenty to inspire lots of oohing and aahing.
Venture into the Troodos mountain villages, where October marks the annual grape harvest. After a summer spent ripening beneath the blissful Cypriot sunshine, the vineyards are bursting with fruit, and the locals hand-pick every bunch. Then, drift between wineries and discover how a quick tasting has a funny way of turning into a full-blown love affair with your new favourite vintage…
Halloumi fiends, you’ve hit the jackpot. Cyprus is the birthplace of this iconic squeaky cheese, best enjoyed sizzling straight off the grill alongside a generous mezze spread. Then, clink glasses of Xynisteri wine as the sun dips below the horizon, casting everything in a golden glow. Cheers to that.

Lights, camera… Peloponnese. October’s warm weather isn’t the only thing turning heads, this legendary corner of mainland Greece has recently found itself in the Hollywood spotlight too, starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Follow in the footsteps of the film crew (and a fair few A-listers) as you tick off the blockbuster backdrops of Voidokilia Beach, Nestor’s Cave and the mighty Methoni Castle, soaking up the sun and the silver-screen scenery.
And when the credits roll on your Hollywood-inspired adventure, step back in time at the ancient remains of Mycenae and the Monemvasia Citadel, where avid history buffs will be in their element.

Set your sights on Sicily this autumn – a front-runner (and one of Izzy's favourites) when considering where’s hot in Europe in October.
Lace up your walking shoes and tackle the trails of Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano, where sweeping views across the countryside make every puff and pant worthwhile. Beyond the lava fields, the surrounding forests are beginning to glow with red and gold foliage, serving up all the autumnal charm without asking you to pack a winter coat.
Afterwards, make a beeline for La Playa Beach, where you can cool off with a dip in the Mediterranean. Then it’s over to the gelateria for the day’s most delicious decision: pistachio, stracciatella or lemon?

One of October’s hotspots (pun intended) is Andalucia in South Spain. While summer temperatures can be scorching, October dials it back to an agreeable warmth, with far fewer tourists jostling for the best views.
In Seville, spend your days ambling around the city’s sun-drenched squares before retreating to a shaded terrace for some al fresco lunch and spritzy sangria. Come afternoon, it’s officially siesta-o’clock. Shutters close, cafés empty and even the most ambitious sightseeing plans are no match for the allure of an afternoon snooze, especially after one too many plates of tapas…
October’s smaller crowds also mean you have a much better chance of nabbing a front-row seat at a traditional tablao for a flamenco performance. Here, castanets click, dancers in ruffled dresses swirl and stamp across the stage and soulful vocals ring out to the twang of the Spanish guitar. Who knows, you might be busting out a few moves of your own before the curtain falls.

The final pin on our hot places in Europe in October map belongs to Portugal’s Algarve.
Fancy giving surfing a whirl? October is prime time to ride the waves, as the wild Atlantic swells of the season begin rolling into the Algarve’s coastline. Book a lesson at Praia do Amado or Praia da Mareta if you’re finding your feet, or if you’re already a seasoned pro, head to Castelejo Beach, where punchier swells promise a thrilling session.
Afterwards, flop onto the sand, lather on the sunscreen and let the Algarve sunshine work its magic. October’s UV still packs plenty of oomph – a surefire way to achieve a sun-kissed glow that’ll brighten even the greyest autumn day back home...
