Vast, varied and visually dazzling, Africa always has something to surprise even the most experienced traveller. This land of safaris and sweeping beaches might not be known for its metropolitan majesty, but Africa’s cities can be just as alluring as its wildlife and wilderness. Come with us as we explore some of the continent’s cultural, scenic and historic highlights with our pick of the most beautiful cities in Africa.
South Africa
Sitting pretty at the south-west tip of the continent, cosmopolitan Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. Clustered beneath the colossal Table Mountain, its setting is simply spectacular. A pilgrimage to the iconic flat summit of the mountain is a rite of passage when visiting the city; whether you ascend via the cable car or hike up the trails that weave round the peak, the views from the tabletop are unforgettable. In Cape Town, the lure of the outdoors is always powerful. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Table Mountain National Park and a string of scenic beaches (including those populated by penguins) are just a few of the natural wonders within easy reach. But the city’s rich culture, vibrant nightlife and world-beating wineries mean there’s lots to love indoors too.

Kenya
Situated in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya, the idyllic island of Lamu is home to a city of the same name; a UNESCO stamped city that is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements. Unspoilt beaches backed by sand dunes, a harbour dotted with traditional dhow boats and winding streets that are the domain of donkeys make Lamu one of Africa’s most charming cities. The Old Town still retains its old-world appeal, with historic buildings sitting alongside crumbling forts and cobbled lanes leading to hidden rooftop restaurants. Here the Swahili saying pole pole (slow down) seems particularly apt, as once you’ve begun to embrace the languid pace of Lamu, you might want to linger a little longer.
Morocco
From the maze-like medina (the historic city centre) where shoppers barter in the bustling souqs (markets) to verdant gardens that offer a shady oasis away from the heat of the hectic streets, Morocco's Marrakech is a mesmerising beauty. And when it comes to where to point your camera, spoilt for choice is an understatement. Landmarks like the Koutoubia Mosque (a regal rose-coloured illustration of Moorish architecture) and the Bahia Palace (‘bahia’ meaning ‘brilliant’, which fits this intricately-adorned marvel) make Marrakech a must-have on any list of the most beautiful cities in Africa.
Namibia
If wildlife watching brings you to Namibia, the capital Windhoek might be the starting point for your safari. Perfectly positioned in the centre of the country, the city is a popular place to get your bearings before a safari or for a wind-down after time in the wilderness. But unlike some cities that act as a gateway to other adventures, Windhoek is a delightful destination in itself. The tree-lined boulevard of Independence Avenue, the colonial architecture and the neo-gothic-meets-art-nouveau Christuskirche (the German Lutheran church) seem like they would be more at home in northern Europe. Take a short trip to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve (just 12 miles out of the city) and you’ll soon remember you’re in the heart of Namibia.

Tanzania
Off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, the archipelago of Zanzibar is a dream for sun seekers and snorkellers and has been likened by some to the Caribbean, just without the crowds. Unguja (also known as Zanzibar) is the archipelago’s main island and the location of historic Stone Town; the old coastal trading post where the cityscape blends African, Indian, Arab and European influences. Get lost in the tangle of ancient streets, admire the elaborately-carved wooden doors that are found across the city and join the locals at Jaws Corner to people-watch over coffee. You might be seeking the trappings of paradise when you come to Zanzibar (white sands, clear waters, palm-shaded swimming pools), but a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stone Town is sure to bring a dose of history and culture to an island getaway.
Mozambique
Mediterranean-inspired buildings, jacaranda-lined avenues and a seaside setting make Maputo one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. Maputo is the capital of Mozambique and both the city and the country remain relatively off-the-radar for most travellers. That means you can enjoy the elegant architecture and relaxed eateries of the baixa (old town) without the crowds. Whatever brings you to Mozambique – diving, desert-island-seeking or a detour from the well-trodden tourist routes – don’t skip out on a trip to Maputo before getting marooned on one of the country’s myriad untouched beaches.
Egypt
Egypt's capital city of Cairo cradles the last remaining example of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Pyramids of Giza. But this enduring feat of human engineering is just part of the city’s wow-factor. Museums, mosques, galleries, bazaars and palaces all vie for your attention, so we recommend placing yourself in the expert hands of a local guide to make the most of your time here. It’s a metropolis of nearly 20 million people, with all the chaotic frenzy you’d expect from such a sprawling city. But the melding of the ancient world with modern life makes Cairo something special.
