When it comes to romance, Greece’s islands set the bar high. From Paros’ sun-kissed beaches and Folegandros’ blush-pink blooms to Sifnos’ culinary delights and Hydra’s slow-paced streets, each island radiates beauty. Whether you fall in love with the sunset in Santorini or the atmosphere in Apollonia, the perfect spot awaits. Read on to discover the most romantic islands in Greece...
Best for: beachside strolls
Picturesque Paros kicks off our list of the most romantic islands in Greece. Sitting pretty in the Cycladic archipelago, Paros offers a quieter alternative to neighbouring Santorini and Mykonos. With pristine white buildings dotted along cobblestone streets and blue-domed churches set against cerulean skies, what’s not to love? By day, stroll hand-in-hand along the island’s postcard-perfect beaches, such as Kolymbithres Beach, famed for its gin-clear waters and granite-bordered coves. Come evening, hop aboard a boat at Aliki port and toast to your trip during a sunset cruise. Pure bliss.

Best for: natural beauty
Next up, the quietly charming Folegandros. Tucked between Paros and Santorini, this well-kept Greek secret is a favourite of our Europe specialist, Emily, who described it as one of the most beautiful Cyclades islands during her research trip. Beyond its trio of idyllic villages (Chora, Karavostasi and Ano Meria), Folegandros is home to swoon-worthy natural landscapes and dramatic coastlines. Enjoy a romantic stay in a cliffside resort with views over the Aegean Sea and pink bougainvillea spilling over your balcony.

Best for: delicious cuisine
They say that the way to your heart is through your stomach, and Sifnos knows a thing or two about good food. From boutique restaurants to rooftop bars, there’s no shortage of dreamy date spots in this laid-back oasis. Wander down the cobbled roads, guided by the aromas of almond pastries, fresh falafel and revithada (chickpea stew), before heading to Apollonia, the island’s capital, for a refreshing cocktail with a sea view. Roll up your sleeves for a private cooking class in a Sifnian home, where a seasoned instructor will teach you about local culinary traditions, or awaken your inner artist on a private tour of Sifnos’ ceramic heritage, stopping at workshops along the way.

Best for: timeless tranquility
Step back in time on a romantic escape in Hydra. Just a short ferry ride from Athens, this Saronic beauty is a true slice of serenity. On arrival, don’t be surprised to spot donkeys, horses and mules transporting luggage and visitors around the winding streets, as Hydra is car-free. Walk past stone houses and charming boutiques or do as the locals do and explore the island from the saddle, trotting past craggy mountains and quaint monasteries. Café-hop along the picturesque harbour, enjoy boat trips to the nearby beaches, or simply soak up the peace and quiet.

Best for: sunset sailing
It’s only right to round off our list of the most romantic islands in Greece with Santorini. A honeymoon haven, this iconic island is renowned for its shimmering waters, royal blue-domed buildings and ancient ruins. Visit Santorini’s sprawling vineyards, sample its various vintages and learn how the volcanic soil gives the wine its distinct character. A boat trip is another must-do during your getaway. Hop aboard a private catamaran to tour the giant sea-filled caldera (created over 3,000 years ago) and admire the breathtaking sunset. To dodge the crowds, we recommend planning your visit during the off-season between November and March.

On a recent research trip to the Peloponnese in Greece, our Europe specialist, Emily, self-drove around the region’s most photo-worthy spots. When she wasn’t basking in the sun on Elafonisos’s beaches or devouring Greek dishes at local tavernas, she was putting on her history hat and exploring the ancient archaeological sites of Mycenae and Epidaurus. From Arcadia’s muscular mountains to the velvety sands of the Mani Peninsula, it was an adventure to remember.

Often overlooked by holidaymakers seeking an authentic Greek experience, the Saronic Islands deserve their moment in the spotlight. Boasting the quintessential Greek combination of dazzling blue sea, skies and vivid green pine tree-covered hillsides, Spetses is one of the best-kept Saronic secrets (until now). Wealthy Greeks have been frequenting their villas on the idyllic isle for years, parking their superyachts offshore for the season; come September, the millionaires have left, and the island reverts to its charming normality.

The Mani Peninsula, the tip of the middle finger on the spindly hand of Greece’s Peloponnese, is still largely untouched by tourism. The relative inaccessibility of this rugged place made it the land of refugees and feudal villages; its inhabitants had to be hardy and inventive to survive. Now, a thick tongue of tarmac carries you smoothly between villages, so as long as you can keep your eyes on the road and not on the views, this area of the Peloponnese is eminently travelable.
