For many of us, Easter marks the peak of springtime. The flowers are blooming, the cold is receding and it feels like brighter days are just around the corner. The only problem? The UK is infamous for dwelling in the purgatory of not-quite-pleasant weather for just a little too long. If you’re anything like us, this probably makes you wish you could forgo the drizzle and skip straight ahead to summer. Well, you can. From balmy breaks on the perimeters of Europe to toasty trips in far-flung regions, read on to find out where’s hot at Easter...

Egypt enjoys thinning crowds and bright sunshine over the Easter period. The average daily temperature sits around 30°C and, thanks to its desert climate, there’s not a drop of rain. However, this is mild compared to the country’s sweltering summers, so take the opportunity to sightsee. Delve into the rich history of Cairo with its ancient pharaonic ruins and the imposing pyramids of Giza; explore the infamous Port of Alexandria; or cruise down the Nile aboard the historic Steam Ship Sudan – the boat that inspired Agatha Christie to write Death on the Nile.
Egypt in Easter is also the perfect time for underwater adventures. Head over to Hurghada to dive in the Red Sea. With warm waters year-round, there’s never a bad time to wade in here. Discover vibrant coral reefs and staggering shipwrecks while diving or snorkelling in these welcoming waters.

Another desert dweller, Las Vegas is always hot making it an excellent Easter escape. There’s zero chance of rain here and an abundance of activities on offer. Book seats at the Cirque du Soleil or take in the splendour of the Sphere, famous for its massive wraparound LED screen. There’s never a dull moment here.
Las Vegas is also an excellent base for exploring the sunbaked surroundings. Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon are just a day’s drive away and a little further afield is Sedona, the beating heart of Red Rock Country. Surrounded by immense red pillars, towering table-topped mesas and majestic mineral columns, it’s a must-see if you’ve got the time to swing east.

The furthest destination on this list, Indonesia is well worth the (often two-part) journey. April marks the beginning of the dry season in Bali, Java, Sumatra and Lombok. This means that the days are warmer, and the chances of an afternoon shower are dwindling. The dry season also means less humidity, so you won’t have to worry about being coated in a sweaty sheen the moment you step outside. Steer clear of Sulawesi, though, since the monsoon season lasts well into April.
Easter is also the best time to spot orangutans. Head to the rainforests of Kalimantan (crossing over into Borneo) or northern Sumatra to be in with the chance of encountering one of these mild-mannered mammals. Head to the more populated regions of Indonesia for an array of enticing experiences, from seeing a dramatic sunrise atop the Mount Batur volcano in Bali to spending an evening watching the Ramayan ballet from a UNESCO-listed building in Java.

Turkey occupies a transcendent location, straddling the continents of Europe and Asia. For this reason, its climate is not consistent throughout any given month, but you can expect tempting temperatures in the low 20s. Over Easter, Istanbul, the Mediterranean coast, the Black Sea and the Anatolian Plateau are your best bets for comfortably warm weather and minimal rainfall. You’ll want to avoid the west coast and the Pontus region, though, since these areas can often be very wet.
Like the weather, the popularity of Turkey during this period also fluctuates. Istanbul hosts its annual Tulip Festival every April, filling the city with a steady buzz of tourists. On the other hand, Easter is the shoulder season for Cappadocia, meaning you can venture out into its arid plains and gaze out over the whimsically named ‘fairy chimneys’ without the crowds. Speaking of crowds, if you want to escape them while visiting the Mediterranean coast, embark on a private gulet (luxury yacht) cruise, dipping in and out of the secluded inlets that line the Turkish coast.

Closing out our list of where’s hot at Easter is Morocco. Like many of the entries here, the country can become a little too toasty over summer, so it’s best to go before the sun reaches its full, fiery potential. At this time of year you’re gifted with temperatures in the mid-20s, wildflower and blossom season is still in full swing, and flocks of migratory birds can be seen soaring over the bright open skies that cover places like the coastal lagoon of Oualidia.
If it’s adventure you’re seeking, make the most of the pleasant temperatures with a hike in the High Atlas Mountains. Home to over 150 species of flowers, these vast plains bloom beautifully over Easter. Or, if it’s culture you’re seeking, make a beeline for Marrakech. Wander the labyrinthine medina that serves as the nation’s epicentre and sip fresh mint tea to keep you cool – a boastful nod to those shivering souls still drinking tea for warmth back home.

Practical advice and inspiration for your next trip
Train travel has come a long way in the last two centuries and remains one of the more positive expressions of humankind’s restless ingenuity. In Japan, developments are currently underway to cut journey times in half, thanks to the frictionless flair of Maglev (Magnetic Levitation). We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out. In the meantime, why not revel in the splendour of times gone by? Since it would be almost impossible (and ridiculously lengthy) to list all the rail innovations that have taken place over the years, we’ve decided to focus on some of the defining moments.
