Reading time

Pin drop travel is our portfolio of destinations where silence is golden. With screens, schedules and the general chaos of the world competing for our attention, there’s never been a better time to escape to quiet holiday destinations so still you can (as the name suggests) hear a pin drop. Sometimes, all we need is the chance to slow down, breathe deeply and rediscover the simple joy of hearing… almost nothing at all. Think wildlife encounters free from chatter and camera clicks, meditation with monks high in the mountains and stargazing beneath desert skies far from glowing city lights. Craving a little peace and quiet? Read on to discover our favourite quiet escapes…

Journey to the heart of France

Life slows down in the sleepy village of Calviac-en-Perigord, tucked deep in the French countryside, where forest-fringed landscapes soften every sound. Forget traffic noise and blaring alarms; here, the soundtrack is all tweets, flutters and rustling leaves competing for top billing. Best wake-up call ever, if you ask us.

Start your day the French way with a fresh pastry and velvety coffee from an indie café (no queues in sight), before ambling through romantic vineyards and honey-hued towns at your own pace. Then, explore the volcanic hills of the Cantal Plateaus and the meadows of Aubrac Nature Park, where afternoons are best spent picnic-spot hunting among the wildflowers.

Namibia’s wilderness

Namibia proves that quiet escapes can still pack a serious punch. Lose yourself among the burnt-orange dunes of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert on Earth, before discovering the striking Spitzkoppe peaks, formed from granite more than 120 million years old.

Trace ancient history on guided archaeological tours as you learn how remote communities once survived in the wilderness, before embarking on sunset hikes into the Erongo Mountains, where giant boulders glow a fiery red. Out here, it’s just you, the landscape and the kind of silence that makes the rest of the world feel very far away.

Summer in Svalbard

High above the Arctic Circle, silence stretches across the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, where glaciers blanket 60% of the region. Set sail on a quiet catamaran cruise towards Billefjorden, fingers firmly on your lips as you scan the snowy wilderness for elusive Arctic foxes weaving across the tundra, puffins soaring overhead and seals basking lazily along the shoreline.

Back to civilisation (well, sort of), spend slow summer days in Longyearbyen soaking up Svalbard’s beauty beneath the Midnight Sun, the extraordinary natural phenomenon where the sky glows around the clock. Wander past charming wooden buildings and roast marshmallows beside a crackling fire as the sun lingers on the horizon.

Lose yourself in Ladakh

Spiritual enlightenment is best found in near silence. Head high into the Indian Himalayas, where hushed voices drift through Nimmu’s sacred sites and Tibetan flags flutter in the mountain breeze. Here, devotion is everywhere, from bowed heads in prayer and chanting monks to the steady flow of worshippers beneath gleaming statues of Buddhist deities.

Ascend to Thiksey Monastery, one of Ladakh’s largest, to witness the ancient puja ceremony: a daily blessing ritual encompassing echoing hymns, swirling incense and flickering candlelight against centuries-old walls. Sip aromatic chai and meditate with the mountains as your backdrop, where the outside world suddenly feels wonderfully unimportant.

A nature sabbatical Down Under

Reconnect with nature on a dreamy sabbatical Down Under. In Australia’s rugged Flinders Ranges, spend your days in rust-red landscapes, keeping your eyes peeled for iconic Aussie wildlife, from kangaroos and emus to sleepy koalas curled high in eucalyptus trees.

Go off-grid in New Zealand’s dramatic Ahuriri Valley, where glacial rivers, towering peaks and vast open landscapes create the ultimate switch-off escape. By night, gaze up at a canopy of stars illuminating the Dark Sky Reserve above you, spotting constellations like Scorpius and Orion’s Belt. Just don’t be surprised if these fan-favourite quiet holiday destinations leave you thinking about a permanent postcode…

Quiet corners of Botswana

Big skies, wildlife sightings and silence that stops you in your tracks: welcome to Botswana. Here, the only daily commute that awaits is by mokoro (a traditional wooden canoe). Drift through the Okavango Delta past floating water lilies, as elephants roam the riverbanks and hippos bob through the reeds nearby.

Then, journey to the lunar-like Makgadikgadi Pans, where you’ll track fresh footprints in the dust, learn to identify medicinal plants used by local communities and recognise bird species by their calls alone. Come evening, it’s sundowners beneath apricot-coloured skies with nothing but the sounds of nocturnal animals beginning to stir all around you.

Across the Andes

Hit the road for an unforgettable adventure through the Andes, where every twist and turn seems determined to outdo the last. Drive through Argentina’s Calchaqui Valley, winding past red canyons, cactus-studded vistas and high-altitude vineyards with barely another car in sight. This kind of road trip calls for a paper map, windows rolled down and handwritten signs pointing you happily towards the middle of nowhere.

By night, cross into Chile’s spellbinding Atacama Desert. Bundle up for evenings spent stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies on Earth, closing your eyes in the pin-drop silence and making wishes across the occasional shooting star.

Immerse yourself in Alaska

Alaska is proof that quiet escapes can still deliver big adventures. As the least densely populated US state, it unfolds in crystal-like glaciers and towering fjords, offering near-silent solace across the six million acres of untamed wilderness that make up Denali National Park.

Lace up your hiking boots to explore Katmai National Park, where wildlife sightings are far more common than crowds. Spot moose, caribou, beavers and grizzlies, alongside the park’s bucket-list brown bears, as they scoop salmon straight from the river.

Where's Hot in August?

Soaked in sunlight, suncream and ice-cream, August is brimming with holiday spirit, particularly for us in the Northern Hemisphere. The only problem? Figuring out how – and where – to savour it. From balmy breaks on the French Riviera to far-flung forays into Singapore’s concrete jungle, there’s no shortage of places to dial up the heat and bask in holiday bliss before autumn rolls around. So, to whet (or should we say warm?

Just Back: Tom’s Trip to Menorca

Tucked away in the shadow of Mallorca, Menorca is often overlooked in favour of its flashier neighbour. A shame because, for those willing to steer off the well-trodden track, there’s a medley of marvels to be found. This is exactly what our Co-Founder and Brand Director, Tom Barber, discovered on his trip to Menorca, which he spent tracing the deep history and quiet allure of this bashful Balearic island.
