Situated on America’s Atlantic Coast between Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee, the Carolinas (North and South) keep a fairly low profile when it comes to US holiday destinations. Yet, this duo of coastal states combines scenic drives, stunning beaches, historic cities and sun-soaked sea islands. Opt for a classic American fly-drive holiday, or alternate between the Outer Banks and the southern cities of Wilmington and Charleston. Romcom lovers might even recognise spots from Nicholas Sparks’ films like The Notebook and Dear John. Experience their famous southern hospitality, indulge in some hearty comfort cuisine and plenty more; read on for our top things to do in the Carolinas that blend the best of their scenic landscapes and charming cities…
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, affectionately referred to as the ‘Smokies’, stretch along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. With its temperate climate and diverse topography, the park plays host to an incredible amount of biodiversity (17,000 plant and animal species, and counting). Although the summer months see the most visitors, autumn (or ‘fall’ as the locals say) is the second best season to visit the Smokies, for the colourful fall foliage and comfortable climes. Watch autumn leaves falling in hues of ochre, amber and gold, as you hike to one of the thundering waterfalls that cut through the landscape. For those who wish to embrace the great outdoors, there are 13 campsites throughout the park where you can pitch a tent and wake up to the wondrous nature. Alternatively, the nearby town of Asheville is a delightful base, with its vibrant arts scene and the historic Biltmore Estate.
Separating the mainland of North Carolina from the Atlantic Ocean is a barrier of islands known as the Outer Banks. Now also the setting for the Netflix show of the same name, their wide-open shoreline, expansive beaches and dinky seaside villages have made them a popular holiday destination. Situated along the Southern Outer Banks, you’ll find Hammocks Beach State Park, a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike, warranting it a place on our list of things to do in the Carolinas. Explore the region’s maritime forest by kayak or paddleboard, and you might be lucky enough to spot some resident dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles.
One of the Southeast’s most charming cities, Charleston is a must-visit on our list of things to do in the Carolinas. Well-preserved colonial architecture, expansive green spaces, world-class restaurants and famous historical sites are just some of the city’s main selling points, and spending a few days here will allow you to get a proper feel for it all. Wander through its cobblestone streets, explore the elegant French Quarter and learn about its Civil War past at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour. If you’re a Nicholas Sparks fan, you might recognise some of the iconic filming locations from The Notebook, such as The American Theater, the College of Charleston (which stood in for Sarah Lawrence College) and the Williams Mansion. Tuck into traditional Southern fare (we’re talking biscuits, brisket and blue crab) at Bertha’s Kitchen, Lewis Barbecue or Hyman’s Seafood.
Another one for film buffs, Cypress Gardens in South Carolina is perhaps best known as the setting for Allie and Noah’s romantic rowing boat ride in The Notebook. A stunning nature reserve in its own right, we recommend adding the gardens to your Carolinas itinerary regardless of its film credits. At the centre of the 170-acre preserve lies an 80-acre blackwater bald cypress and tupelo swamp, ringed by foot trails. In this case, real life can imitate art if you opt to hop aboard one of the swamp boat rides; glide past the towering cypress and tupelo trees like your favourite Nicholas Sparks characters, keeping your eyes peeled for alligators, birdlife and turtles.
Flying slightly under the radar compared to Charleston, North Carolina’s port city of Wilmington is brimming with just as much southern charm. Wilmington is also in possession of some artistic accolades, as the filming location for numerous blockbusters including The Longest Ride, Safe Haven and Iron Man 3. Visit the picturesque historic district, explore the decks of the USS North Carolina – a restored WWII battleship – and take in the views along the Riverwalk, a boardwalk which runs for nearly two miles.
