Where’s Hot in Europe in April

They say April showers pave the way for spring blooms, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick around waiting for them. While much of Europe is still shaking off winter beneath stubborn grey skies, the south is already enjoying golden sunshine and pleasantly warm days. From the spice-scented streets of Istanbul and the ancient wonders of Athens to Sicily’s coastal charm and Andalucia’s cultural soul, April strikes the sweet spot for spring exploring. Ready to make the most of it? Read on to discover where’s hot in Europe in April…

  1. Istanbul, Turkey
  2. Sicily, Italy
  3. Madeira, Portugal
  4. Athens, Greece
  5. Andalucia, Spain

1

Istanbul, Turkey

Average temperature: 15-20ºC

Istanbul doesn’t ease you in: it grabs your attention from the moment you arrive with the buzz of marketeers, the distant call to prayer, clinking tea glasses and the aroma of spices drifting through the streets. Straddling Europe and Asia, this city is a feast for the senses – wander through ornate mosques, browse saffron, gold and textiles in the sprawling souqs and marvel at the lively chaos of the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar.

After some successful haggling, soak up the April sunshine with a cup of cay tea or rich Turkish coffee served with lokum (Turkish delight). Exploring a city bursting with culture and colour is bound to work up an appetite, so indulge in simit (a sesame-crusted bread ring), plates of mezze, doner and syrupy baklava (a pistachio pastry dessert). And nothing complements the spring warmth quite like dondurma, Turkey’s stretchy ice cream, which is twirled by street vendors in side-street performances – as fun to watch as it is to eat.

Sicily, Italy

Average temperature: 15-21ºC

Sicily has claims to fame that are hard to beat. Home to Europe’s tallest active volcano, Mount Etna, it’s also the largest island in the Mediterranean, brimming with old Italian charm. Travel from coast to coast, discovering landscapes teeming with wildflowers and almond trees set alongside the sun-drenched beaches of San Vito Lo Capo and the azure bays of Calamosche – perfect for swimming, snorkelling or simply soaking up the warmth.

Craving a taste of city life? Visit Palermo, where centuries of history are reflected in grand plazas, or wander Ragusa, a hilltop Baroque town home to the elegant Duomo di San Giorgio. Adventure lovers can even hike Mount Etna, with the mild April weather making the climb doable.

Complete your Sicilian experience with a stop at a local winery to sample Nero d’Avola (made with native Sicilian grapes), then escape to the volcanic gems of the Aeolian Islands to unwind in their thermal springs or soothing mud baths. With its coasts, character and captivating culture, Sicily is the perfect answer for where’s hot in Europe in April.

Madeira, Portugal

Average temperature: 16-22ºC

For our next recommendation, we’re venturing out of Europe. Well, not quite: Madeira is still very much part of the continent, but this Portuguese archipelago is often referred to as the ‘Hawaii of Europe’ for its tropical landscapes and volcanic views. With sights scattered along a rugged Atlantic coastline, the island is best discovered by car, which makes it easier to tackle steep hills and twisty coastlines. Along your road trip, explore the ancient Laurissilva Forest, which covers around 20% of the island and shelters endemic birds such as the Trocaz pigeon and the Madeira Firecrest.

Capture panoramic views at Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, the archipelago’s tallest peaks, and seek out cliffside paths and hidden waterfalls along the Levada das 25 Fontes and Levada do Caldeirao Verde hiking trails. In April’s balmy temperatures, a cooling dip or lie-down on the island's black-sand beaches feels like a well-earned reward after a long hike – April in Madeira might not bring an intense Hawaii-level heat, but it feels every bit as exotic.

Athens, Greece

Average temperature: 16-20ºC

Craving a city break? Athens delivers history, culture and sunshine in equal measure, making it a strong contender when considering where’s hot in Europe in April. Wander among the city’s ancient landmarks, from the Acropolis and the Parthenon to Ancient Agora, once the heart of Classical Greece. Mythology is ever-present here: Athens itself is named after Athena, whose gift of the olive tree (a symbol of peace, prosperity and sustenance) won her the city’s patronage. For a taste of this famed myth, visit nearby groves and settlements and try Greek olives, considered among the best in the world.

For a more 21st-century end to the evening, Athens come alive in Plaka and Monastiraki, where rooftop bars and vibrant tavernas offer local dishes, glasses of Assyrtiko and the views of the Acropolis glowing after dark. With April’s cooler air and fewer crowds, you can admire Athens in peace – a city as beautiful as the day Athena first claimed it.

Andalucia, Spain

Average temperature: 15-25ºC

Step into the heart of Southern Spain, where Andalucia pulses with a soul of its own.  Warmer days and longer evenings make April perfect for exploring the streets of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, where Moorish architecture, fortresses and delicate carvings reflect centuries of history. Drift from tapas bar to cafeteria, watching flamenco dancers stomp and twirl to the fiery strum of the guitar as music spills out into sunlit squares.

April in Andalucia might not scorch the streets, but it’s warm enough for a long siesta – a perfect excuse to raise a glass of sangria or manzanilla enjoyed alongside the locals and their sumptuously slow pace of life. It’s a fitting reminder that when considering where’s hot in Europe in April, warmth comes from the people and culture as much as the temperature.
