Saudi Arabia might be synonymous with soaring skyscrapers, but did you know that it also boasts ample ancient sites? Step back in time to pre-Islamic Saudi Arabia at the ancient city of Hegra (Al-Hijr), a UNESCO World Heritage site near AlUla. Rivalling Petra in Jordan, this archaeological marvel is home to 131 striking Nabatean mausoleums – carved into colossal ochre rocks – that date back to the first century AD. The ancient city of Diriyah is another must-visit UNESCO site, built in the 15th century, it showcases the Nadji-style architecture of the first capital of the Saudi state. For a further glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s distinctive heritage, head to the Rijal Almaa village, a traditional eighth-century village home to stone and clay buildings with colourful shutters in the Asir Mountains.

With sprawling deserts, palm-lined canyons and lush oases to explore, it’s no wonder that more and more people are choosing to visit Saudi Arabia. We recommend watching the sunset at the iconic Elephant Rock near AlUla, a towering pink sandstone formation in the desert. Settle around one of the sunken firepits and grab a bite to eat from a food truck as the sun dips behind the horizon. Or head to the ‘Edge of the World’, a 3,711ft-high cliff jutting out into the desert expanse near Riyadh. This Mars-like marvel offers unparalleled panoramic views across the sandscape and is at its most beautiful at sunset. For a touch of greenery, look no further than Al Ahsa – one of the world’s largest natural oases and a UNESCO site – replete with date palm groves and natural springs.

Home to two of Islam’s holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia is a significant pilgrimage destination for Muslims around the world. Although non-Muslims aren’t allowed to enter Mecca, tourists can visit Medina (although the Prophet’s Mosque is off limits). The coastal city of Jeddah is another culture-laden destination, where you can wander the captivating old town of Al-Balad, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Get lost among its narrow, winding alleyways and marvel at the coral stone mansions adorned with colourful rawasheen (wooden lattice windows). In the capital, Riyadh, shop for trinkets at the bustling Souq Al Zal, uncover the country’s history at the National Museum and walk the walls of the 19th-century Al Masmak Fortress.

Eager divers and snorkellers can visit Saudi Arabia to explore its wonderful underwater world. Off the coast of Saudi’s shores in the Red Sea, enjoy uncrowded dive sites and myriad marine life away from the more popular sites off Egypt’s shores. Home to over 1,200 species of fish, at least 200 different types of coral and plenty of pelagic predators (including almost 50 species of shark), there’s no shortage of spectacular sights to spot in the watery depths. Head to the Farasan Banks for wild island reefs, Jeddah for the best wreck diving and Yanbu for incredible visibility. In short, there are ample options for all divers to enjoy in this up-and-coming dive destination.

In our opinion, food is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a country's culture. It’s also an integral part of Saudi national identity, with meals often communal affairs shared with friends and family. Where to begin? Start with the national dish, kabsa, which is comprised of a mixture of fluffy rice, meat (usually lamb), vegetables and an aromatic blend of spices. Or try the Saudi staple of jareesh, a creamy cracked wheat stew with the consistency of porridge. If you fancy something sweet, tuck into mouthwatering maqshush, sweet baked dough balls served with honey, jams, date molasses and fresh cream – a popular dessert found across the country.
