Long-lost civilisations, ancient gods and some of the best historic sites on the planet are just a handful of the dazzling headline acts of Red Sea holidays. Whether you’re a history buff or not, there’s a universal wonder to the monuments of Egypt, from the breathtaking Pyramids of Giza to the millenia-old hieroglyphics etched into the temples of Luxor, or the dark magic that resides in the Valley of the Kings tombs; nothing prepares you for seeing each intoxicating relic with your own eyes. But if you thought Egypt was a one note destination, it will prove you wrong at every turn. Feel the heat of the city in the souqs of Cairo; float down the mighty Nile on a felucca (sailing boat) as the sun disappears beyond the horizon; or find a slice of beach perfection on Egypt’s Red Sea coast in Hurghada, a blissful spot to swim, sunbathe and snorkel.

"This is the first trip we have ever taken where we have been looked after so comprehensively by everyone involved. It was so helpful to have all the information we needed accessible on an app, and wonderful not to have to worry about checking in for flights. We enjoyed great service at both the airports and hotels, which had great staff and fantastic food, and our guide David and driver Mohammed were excellent throughout and made our two-week trip really special."

"Our trip for 10 was a true bucket list holiday. The boat, a traditional dahabiya called Lazuli, was heavenly and exceeded our expectations. It was the most exquisite way to cruise down the Nile, with comfortable cabins, beautiful views, an amazing crew and delicious food - we dined like Pharaohs! We stopped to see many wondrous sites along the Nile, and our guide, Migo, was brilliant, offering just the right amount of information. The BBQ singing and dancing with the crew was a standout moment. Original Travel was amazing, and everyone involved was knowledgeable, helpful and adaptable when organising a trip for so many."

"It was fantastic! We felt very well looked after, which made the experience more relaxed. The whole trip was incredible – we kept thinking 'this is the best bit', but it was all excellent. Being on the Steam Ship Sudan was very special and so were all our stops, with fantastic guides, drivers and local contacts throughout."

What can you find during Red Sea holidays that you won't find anywhere else?

Sheer variety is the name of the game when it comes to Red Sea holidays. With world-famous ancient monuments studding the desert landscape, a stay in Egypt represents the pinnacle of all historic destinations, and yet city slickers and beach obsessives will find something to love here too. Spend a day kicking back in one of Cairo’s luxury hotels or try a smattering of local delicacies in a packed cafe before experiencing The Great Sphinx of Giza in all its glory. Then swap city sightseeing and historic wonders for the glistening Red Sea Riviera where you’ll find busy towns hugging the coastline; spectacular coral reefs with next-level diving; and the very best luxury beachfront hotels.

Who is a Red Sea holiday best for?

Historians, rejoice – Egypt is a serious overachiever in the ancient history department and the monuments, temples, landmarks and museums that dot the landscape offer an array of pinch-me moments. Red Sea holidays are packed with UNESCO-listed sites, from Ancient Thebes and its necropolis, to Saint Catherine’s Monastery at the foothills of Mount Sinai, ancient civilisations are just a hair’s breadth away at all times. Adventure seekers looking for a city break like no other, let us introduce you to Cairo. With its lively art scene and political resonance, this magnetic city is a raw, modern assault on the senses, and its history emanates from every corner of its many buzzing souqs and mesmerising temples. For families and couples looking for some rest and relaxation, the Red Sea coast is a welcome escape – sandwiched between the gentle waves of the ocean and sprawling desert hills, the town of Hurghada offers miles of white sandy beaches, world-class diving and sumptuous resorts aplenty.

Special things to do during a Red Sea holiday

Sail the Nile

One of the Nile’s most impressive vessels, the historic Steam Ship Sudan was the inspiration for Agatha Christie’s novel, Death on the Nile. Play the leading character of your own mysterious adventure tale as you climb aboard the elegant Edwardian ship and cruise the glittering waters of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. Disembark each day to delve into the country’s greatest ancient sites with expert guides leading the way.

Dive in the Red Sea

Wade into the balmy waters of the Red Sea during a stay along the region’s sandy coast. The diving here is some of the best in the country; discover the incredible underwater world that hides underneath the warm, turquoise waters and make friends with the shoals of rainbow-bright fish that dart by.
