You can never have too much of a good thing, but you can be overwhelmed by too much choice. The Maldives are home to over 1,000 islands (around 1,192, to be exact), each a jewel of secluded serenity. They’re all sun-soaked and luxury-laden so the only challenge is finding out which one is right for you. Thankfully, we’ve done our fair share of exploration, so we can separate the island resorts that offer adventurous activities galore from those that promise serious serenity. Read on to get the lowdown on the best islands in the Maldives...

  1. Honeymooners’ havens: Milaidhoo & Gili Lakanfushi

Honeymooners’ havens

Milaidhoo & Gili Lakanfushi

A destination synonymous with honeymoons, the Maldives are a masterclass in catering for two. Remote and luxurious, these islands feel like stepping into a different world, one where time stops, and relationships bloom.

With honeymoons, weddings, engagements and babymoons in their romantic repertoire, no one does couples' holidays quite like Milaidhoo. Located in Baa Atoll, the resort offers intimate candle-lit dinners, aromatic petal-dusted baths, and decadent assortments of chocolates. Gili Lakanfushi, in the North Male Atoll, also excels on this front, offering guests the chance to dine ankle-deep in the azure waters of the resort’s lagoon. For the big (and the small) moments, these resorts know how to set the tone.

Family favourites

Six Senses Kanuhura & The Residence at Dhigurah

The Maldives aren’t just a romantic refuge. They’re great fun for families, too. Whether you’re seeking bonding moments or independent activities, look no further than these family-oriented oases.

At Six Senses Kanuhura, located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, the focus is on introducing youngsters to wellness – whether it’s a flying yoga class (using silk hammocks suspended from the ceiling) or an introduction to meditation. Elsewhere, teens can find refuge in the Island Hideout, and there are film screenings under the stars for all ages to enjoy. To bring the whole family together, the resort also offers picnics, cooking classes, water sports sessions and trips to a private island. Over at The Residence, in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the Turtle Kids Club has a teens programme, babysitting service and an array of fun family activities from palm leaf origami to bracelet making. It’s clear to see why these resorts are our family favourites.

Gourmet getaways

Six Senses Laamu & Soneva Jani

When you think of gastronomical gems, the Maldives might not be the first place that comes to mind. So, we’re highlighting the cream of the crop. While the whole region offers an array of fresh, locally sourced delights, two island resorts are taking things a mouthful further.

An epicurean Eden, Six Senses Laamu – in the lovely Laamu Atoll – prides itself on its picture-perfect presentations and fastidious flavours. With seven restaurants, a poolside bar and an extravagant ice cream parlour (serving 48 exclusive flavours), there’s something for every craving. Despite this, Soneva Jani, on Medhufaru island, still manages to take the cake – catering to almost every other indulgence you can think of. From the seafood flair of Crab Shack to the plant-powered plates at So Wild, its extensive list of dining options is sure to spark salivation and end in satiation.

Active atolls

Soneva Fushi & the Four Seasons Resort at Landaa Giraavu

Both situated on Baa Atoll (a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), these island paradises boast far more than your standard aqueous adventure. Of course, diving and snorkelling are offered, but it's the more unusual activities we’re raving about.

In Soneva Fushi, hardcore adrenaline-junkies can fly on a magic carpet. Well, not quite. It's actually eFoiling – an adventure sport combining surfing, skateboarding, flying and deep-powder snowboarding. If that doesn’t meet your adrenaline aspirations, there’s also eSurfing, which takes place on a motorised surfboard. On the calmer side, there are glass-blowing workshops, an astronomical dinner cruise and private stargazing sessions accompanied by the resident astronomer (yes, really). The Four Seasons has an equally energetic agenda: from meeting dolphins and sunset fishing trips to jet ski adventures and round-the-clock tennis sessions. eFoiling is also on offer here, but there are no motorised surfboards just yet...

Marine marvels

Mirihi & Como Cocoa

What would a list of the best islands in the Maldives be without a nod to diving? Thanks to our sister company, Original Diving, we'll never know. Characterised by vibrant coral formations and magnificent marine life, the Maldives is one of the best locations for underwater exploration.

Ahead of the herd (or shoal) are Mirihi and Como Cocoa. The former is situated on the South Ari Atoll, a region renowned for its clear, populous waters. Accompanied by the resort’s Ocean-Pro team, guests can explore 50 different dive sites, swimming alongside manta rays, whale sharks and coral gardens year-round. Over in Como Cocoa, Vaavu Atoll’s equally lively waters offer the chance to snorkel with nurse sharks, dive in the dramatic Kandooma Caves and even experience the fluorescent flair of a luminous UV light show after dark. There’s no shortage of spectacular seascapes here.

Self-care sojourns

Joali BEING & Como Maalifushi

Last but not least, you. Yes, you. The Maldives offer an abundance of ways to practice self-care, and while jetting off to an island paradise is a good start, there’s no reason to let the tranquillity plateau once you arrive.

With 13 programmes centred on the pillars of mind, microbiome, skin and energy, Joali BEING (located on the secluded Bodufushi Island in the Raa Atoll) is on our minds for its dedication to relaxation and rejuvenation. Guests can seek both internal and external restoration with everything from herbal tea detoxifying treatments to expertly executed massages. Then there’s Como Maalifushi, which boasts an award-winning approach to holistic wellness. Slip away for a moment of serenity or treat yourself to a full day of pampering with their range of treatments and experiences – you’ve made the trip; you may as well reap the rewards.

To a tea... We think Soneva Fushi is one the most friendly, charming and laid back places in the Maldives - a place that does friendly, charming and laid back pretty much to perfection. You pay for the privilege, naturally, but this has to be one of the great places to decompress from the reality of life back home.   The best bit? So, what's the best bit? There are plenty of highlights to choose from - the delicious sushi at lunchtime, amazing diving with manta rays - but the Six Senses spa is a particular treat.

Paragliding into Six Senses Zighy Bay

What a way to arrive. Competition in the hotel business is cut-throat, and properties are coming up with ever more outlandish ways to earn a few lines of coverage in the press or to generate conversation. The Maldives has gone with the whole underwater theme - first there was the underwater spa, the first underwater restaurant, and now an underwater club is coming soon.   Six Senses Zighy Bay How to up the ante again?
