Whistler Ski Holidays

Published 1st Feb. 2024

Reading time

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie strapping on skis for the first time, Whistler Blackcomb is the crème de la crème of ski resorts. The largest of its kind in North America, its slopes are packed with black runs (and backcountry opportunities for off-piste adventures), ziplines, cross-country trails and skating rinks. So, even if you find that you're somewhat snow-challenged, there are still plenty of things to do, other than ski, on Whistler ski holidays. Shop ‘til you drop in its sweeping village, home to big brands such as Patagonia and Lululemon, bounce between breweries and bars bubbling with live music and craft ales and refuel at fine dining restaurants, where you’ll be treated to a true taste of Canadian cuisine.

Skiing in Whistler

Whistler is one of those places every skier needs to visit at least once. Often voted the best ski resort in North America, it is home to well-maintained pistes for all abilities (as you’d expect) and lots of them (200 marked runs to be precise). In addition to that, there are tree-runs (aptly named Davies Dervish, Outer Limits and In The Spirit), steep couloirs and the Flute Bowl, a decent-sized cornice that requires you to launch over before descending into your line. If you’re a novice, it’s not a problem. The ski schools are top-notch, offering private and group adult and children’s lessons, and is the perfect way to graduate from snow ploughs. For advanced skiers, there is the opportunity for off-piste guiding too.

More than just a ski resort

Whistler has it all. Two mountains (Whistler and Blackcomb), an endless array of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and a legendary aprés nightlife, plus more snow activities than you’ll probably have time to fit in. From adrenaline-fuelled heli-skiing to more peaceful pursuits such as guided snowshoeing tours and cross-country skiing trails among tranquil and breathtaking alpine scenery, there really is something for everyone. A must is the 'Peak 2 Peak' gondola, which links Whistler Mountain's Roundhouse Lodge with Blackcomb Mountain's Rendezvous Restaurant. The incredible (year-round) journey offers jaw-dropping views - especially from the glass-bottomed gondolas. And if you visit in the summer months, when the snow has melted and been replaced by wildflowers, Whistler ski holidays shall become Whistler summer holidays, where endless forest paths and bike trails await.

Sleeping on the slopes

Whistler ski holidays don’t do things by halves, especially when it comes to hotels. Situated on the side of snowy slopes, these chalet-style resorts and spas combine classic elegance and modern alpine design with carefully curated dining experiences. One of our favourites is the Four Seasons Resort in Whistler. Ideally located at the base of the Blackcomb Mountain with shuttle access to both the village and Whistler Mountain, you can ski right up to the front door. And, once back from a long day's skiing, there's a heated outdoor pool, sauna and spa waiting for you. The Fairmont Chateau isn’t to be missed either. Famed for its impeccable service, its restaurant, Grill Room, offers a West Coast steakhouse experience combining fresh, regional ingredients with only the finest chops.

Whistler Village

The pedestrian-only Whistler Village is a destination unto itself. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll along its stone walkways, launching your next on-mountain adventure or watching the latest blockbuster at the cinema, you won’t find yourself twiddling your thumbs on Whistler ski holidays. One of our favourite restaurants is Rim Rock Café, which specialises in upscale seafood, fish and game (the oysters are particularly good). If you’re in the mood for some retail therapy, head to McCoo's (George McConkey is the best ski boot fitter around), or hit up shops like Patagonia, Columbia and Oakley. If you have children in tow, why not swap an afternoon on the slopes for one on its Magic Castle and Tree Fort. Or, go on a high-flying adventure with Ziptrek’s network of ziplines and suspension bridges.
