Our resident family expert Lydia Gard returns, this time recommending her best holidays for teenagers.... I recently spent a few days in a villa with a friend and her gorgeous teenagers. The boy, 14, goofed around with the toddlers all day long, and held his own with the adults during the dinnertime banter. The girl, 16, was a silent hormone casserole wearing an iTouch. Leave me with a toddler and I can entertain them effortlessly. Leave me with a teenager and it turns out I revert.

Here’s what I learned...

1. Being 16 is not at all sweet. Especially when you have never been kissed. 2. Your first kiss should not be with a swarthy Tuscan with a jealous girlfriend. 3. I'm lucky to have two boys. To avoid the above scenario, stick together as a family and make sure that everyone is engaged by adventure of one sort or another. Serious heel-draggers or those post-exam can still opt for a fly and flop beach holiday, but as a parent remember it's your responsibility to cast your eye up from your magazine regularly with scathing glances to keep the local boys at bay. NB. Friends without teens should not be left in charge. After consultation with a gaggle of willing teens, here are my best holidays for teenagers.

Chillax in Cyprus

With style in bucket loads, you really can keep all the people happy, all the time at the Anassa and the Almyra. Waterskiing, horse riding, tennis, spa, pools and lashings of beach action, its bound to satisfy every whim.

Sweden

Take a winter adventure to Swedish Lapland, staying in a log cabin and an ice hotel. Burn off steam dog-sledding and take a snowmobile safari through the forests. End with shopping in Stockholm for a cool Scandi wardrobe to take home.

Costa Rica

Whether they are eco-conscious, animal fanatics or just plain thrill seekers, exploring the coastal rainforest is right up there on the hotlist of seriously cool family holidays.

Borneo

Round off rainforest adventures and Orang-utan encounters, with lazy beach days and maybe a PADI diving course in Malaysia. Ticks all the boxes.

Safari Kenya

Who doesn't love a safari? Especially when teens can ditch the parents and head out with Maasai guides to learn about plants and hunt for animal tracks. Combine bush and beach for the perfect balance.
