Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri The Shangri-La is blessed with possibly the best view in Abu Dhabi, looking across the water to the imposing Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The look here is understated Arabian (except for the huge gold leaf lobby), and in total there are 214 spacious and very tastefully designed rooms and suites with either balconies or terraces looking out over that view, and with marble bathrooms.

Snacks and drinks are also on offer in a small lobby bar and there is an outside courtyard where the excellent chef serves up the finest food in town.

Four Seasons Gresham Palace Without doubt the best - albeit also the most bank-busting - place to stay in Budapest, and one of Europe's finest hotels, full stop. Originally built in 1906 for the Gresham Life Insurance Company (hence the official name the Four Seasons Gresham Palace Hotel), the latter day Four Seasons is an Art Nouveau masterpiece. Despite occupying probably the finest location in the city - right opposite the iconic Chain Bridge, by the 90s the building was desperately in need of a face lift.

Hacienda San Jose Hacienda San Jose is a traditional hacienda, with a distinctly authentic air about it. Sierra Lodge Those in need of the mod-est of mod cons might find Sierra Lodge a little on the spartan side, but it's hard to beat this place for sheer character. The cosy rooms each have two double beds and a private bathroom with hot shower, and the dining room has a roaring fire in a stone fireplace around which you can sit sipping a well-earned margarita after a day's trekking.

Hotel Bellevue The modern Hotel Bellevue is set on the cliffs above Miramare Bay, just outside the old town of Dubrovnik. A view I'll never forget... Not quite what I imagined! After a short stay in Verbier last January, I decided to go to the tents that are pitched in the snow near to Villars and see what all the hype was about. Wow was I in for an incredible experience. Hotel Atitlan The welcoming rooms in this converted family coffee farm are individually decorated with traditional Guatemalan textiles and furniture. Each bathroom boasts ceramic tile floors and marble walls, along with hand-crafted frames for the large mirrors. All of the bedrooms have private balconies, making the most of their privilaged position overlooking the lake. The hotel has a good restaurant, bar and terrace, and the large garden is home to many exotic birds as well as a swimming pool that overlooks the volcanoes.
