Munduk Moding Plantation is one of Bali’s hidden gems, nestled away on a hilltop in northern Bali, amid acres of coffee plantation, and with stunning views over the north coast of the island.
Days in Munduk are spent exploring the plantations, rice terraces and villages on foot or by mountain bike, stopping for a dip in waterfall pools, or kayaking across the placid waters of Bali's great lakes, Tamblingan and Buyan. That, or for guests at the Munduk Moding Plantation, enjoying spoiling spa treatments, or lounging poolside with a cool drink, good book and nothing but birdsong to disturb the peace.
Suites and Villas are sprinkled around the plantation, in order to take full advantage of the scenic views. Three Garden Suites are a little compact, but alluringly close to the main infinity pool, whilst the free standing villas enjoy optimum views, and many are tucked away for privacy. Villas are crafted with tropical hardwood floors, and marble bathrooms, including a large soaking bathtub, outdoor shower and floor to ceiling panoramic windows. The two bedroom Coffee Villa is a great option for families, whilst those than enjoy a dip in the pool will want to plump for one of the one, two or four bedroom Pool Villas. All Suites and Villas offer the usual mod cons - TV, CD and DVD player - as well as private terraces where guests can dine.
This is a quiet part of Bali, and so most guests will dine in at Munduk Moding, but that's no bad thing. Organic food is prepared using ingredients from the chef's garden: aside Robusta and Arabica coffee, a wide range of tropical fruit and veg is grown on-site including strawberries, papaya, oranges, chilli, potatoes and even rice.
The Munduk Moding Spa is shrouded by coffee trees and jungle, and built of tropical hardwood and marble. Therapists pamper guests with a range of Balinese massage techniques, and fragrant spa products - many of which are infused with fresh, local coffee.
On arrival, guests are given a map of the plantation so that they can explore at leisure, soak up the views and find a quiet Bale Begong to relax in. Facilities at Munduk Moding include a heated infinity pool, jacuzzi tub, gym, tennis court, lounge with book, magazine and DVD library, and binoculars for guests keen to spot some of Munduk's prolific bird life. Afternoon tea is served with sweet treats, whilst a fire is lit each evening to ward off the hilltop chill (tip: bring a sweater). Guests can also learn a variety of Balinese crafts and cultural traditions, including kite making and Gamelan playing.
Away from the Plantation, hiking and biking through some of the islands most beautiful scenery is a must, though village and market tours, visits to the Botanical Gardens, horse riding, kayaking and even diving off of the north coast can be arranged locally.
Why we love it
Guest Suites and Villas come with a mobile phone, which guests can carry with them as they explore the Plantation, so that 'room service' can be ordered to be enjoyed al fresco.
