Indonesia isn’t one destination so much as thousands scattered across the sea, each with its own rhythm and personality. On this two-week honeymoon trip, you and your other half will experience three very different islands – Java, Bali and Flores – and discover just how varied the country can be when you venture off the beaten track.

Start in central Java, surrounded by volcanoes and fertile plains, where ancient temples and misty mornings set the tone. From there, it’s on to Bali for relaxed exploration through Ubud and Sidemen’s rice paddies, rituals and village life, before finally heading east to Flores. Here, wild landscapes, turquoise waters and Komodo dragons bring your romantic Indonesian getaway to an exciting close.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Let the honeymoon excitement commence. Your romantic getaway to Indonesia begins today with a 19-hour flight to Java, including a quick stopover elsewhere in Asia. Once you’ve touched down, hop on another short one-hour flight to Semarang. It’s a long journey (but totally worth it), and you’ll arrive in Indonesia the following day.

Once you’ve arrived in Semarang, you’ll be met by your driver for the journey inland to Magelang. Check in for three nights in the hills, surrounded by lush vegetation and views of no fewer than eight volcanoes. Spend the rest of the day settling in, relaxing by the pool, or simply watching mist drift across the hills – you deserve it after all that travelling.

After taking in the view of the rolling hills from the terrace this morning, set off to discover a stunning example of Buddhist art: Borobudur Temple. Built in the eighth and ninth centuries, it’s the world’s largest Buddhist temple, decorated with over 2000 relief panels and around 500 statues. Spend the morning admiring its intricate facade or, if that’s not quite enough, venturing inside the temple in the company of a private guide.

This afternoon, we’ll also arrange for you to enjoy a traditional Javanese massage in the spa. Once you’re feeling well and truly relaxed, the rest of the day is yours to spend some quality time together, whether that’s lounging, exploring and enjoying your peaceful surroundings.

At the first light of dawn (it’ll be worth it, we promise), set off on a hike up the slopes of Mount Andong, one of the eight mountains surrounding Magelang. After approximately two-and-a-half hours of walking, a breathtaking 360° view over the mountains awaits you. On a clear morning, the views stretch across Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing and Sindoro, all bathed in soft morning light.

Once you’ve snapped the perfect sunrise shot, return to the hotel for a well-earned breakfast and a restful afternoon.

Today, you’ll be privately transferred to Semarang Airport, where you’ll hop on a quick one-hour-and-15-minute flight to Denpasar, Bali.

Upon arrival in Denpasar, you’ll be privately transferred to Ubud, a one-and-a-half-hour journey. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company on your terrace, then head to the hotel restaurant for a fresh and tasty evening meal.

Ubud is Bali’s cultural heart, having long attracted artists, dancers and craftspeople. Spend the day exploring at your own pace – wandering through galleries, temples and rice paddies, or visiting the bird park nearby.

As evening falls, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a purification ceremony at a secluded temple, led by its spiritual guardian. This ritual is deeply rooted in Balinese culture, intended to cleanse and rebalance, accompanied by chanting and the sounds of the jungle after dark.

This morning, start the day off right with a therapeutic couple’s massage at your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure: explore Ubud town, stroll along rice-field trails or stop at a warung for a simple local meal.

In the evening, you may wish to attend a traditional dance performance or opt for a private batik workshop to learn the secrets of this ancient dyeing technique.

Today, it’s time to leave Ubud behind and travel east towards Sidemen, taking the scenic route through villages and countryside. Along the way, stretch your legs with a gentle bike ride on quiet roads, with time to stop and chat with local artisans.

After lunch overlooking the rice paddies, continue to Sidemen and check in for two nights. Peace and quiet is the order of the day here, so spend your afternoon relaxing and admiring the sweeping views.

Sidemen is ideal for unhurried exploration, and we’ve left today free for you to do just that. Visit the local market, walk through vegetable gardens and flower fields, or drop into a ceramics or weaving workshop.

Those curious about Bali’s textile traditions may wish to learn more about songket, a richly patterned fabric woven by hand, in a local workshop. You could also visit nearby temples, including Pura Besakih, which is set away from the island’s usual crowds.

Is your better half a foodie? A cooking class in the rice paddies is also available if you’d like a hands-on culinary experience.

A private chauffeur-driven vehicle will once again take you to Denpasar Airport, where you'll catch a one-hour-and-15-minute flight to Flores.

Upon arrival, another private transfer will take you to Labuan Bajo, where you'll settle in for three nights just steps from the beach. Spend the rest of the day by the pool, on the sand or exploring the shoreline.

Today, you’ll get up close and personal to the Komodo dragons of Komodo Island. The islands of Komodo, Padar, and Rinca all belong to Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo dragon, large monitor lizards that can reach almost 10ft in length (and swallow a deer whole).

Accompanied by a ranger, observe the famous dragons in their natural habitat, along with deer, buffalo and birdlife. Cameras at the ready: the landscapes are strikingly beautiful here, with dry savannah hills backed by bright blue sea.

The day also includes time to swim or snorkel around Padar Island, Pink Beach and Manta Point.

Your final full day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Swim, snorkel or dive in the clear waters, relax on the beach or simply bask in each other’s company before enjoying a sundowner on the sand, toasting to newlywed life.

Sadly, your romantic Indonesian adventure has come to an end. Transfer back to Flores Airport for your one-hour-and-15-minute flight back to Bali, then board your overnight flight to the UK. The journey will take about 19 hours (including a quick stopover), arriving the following day.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

PRIVATE TOUR OF BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

Built between the 8th and 9th centuries, Borobudur Temple was designed as a nod to the Buddhist journey towards enlightenment. On this tour, discover Borobudur with a private English-speaking guide and explore one of the great masterpieces of Buddhist art. As you walk its levels, finely carved bas-reliefs unfold panel by panel, telling stories intended to guide pilgrims along the spiritual path. Boasting impressive design, extraordinary craftsmanship and more than 500 Buddha statues, a visit to this temple is quietly powerful.

BATIK WORKSHOP IN UBUD

Keen to learn more about Bali’s traditions? During this five-hour workshop, you’ll meet a master artisan from Solo, the historic heartland of batik tulis, and try your hand at this intricate wax-resist dyeing technique. Using hot wax instead of a brush, you’ll choose your canvas, learn how to draw a motif freehand and apply colour. The experience ends on a relaxed note, sharing a traditional meal together, and your creation will be finished and returned to you the following day.

COOKING CLASS IN THE RICE PADDIES

If you’re travelling with a foodie, then this one’s for you. The class begins with a visit to the local market, wandering between colourful stalls as you select fresh produce, herbs and spices. From there, head to a small village surrounded by rice paddies, where your host will introduce you to traditional cooking techniques. After preparing a selection of local dishes, sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labour, before taking a gentle walk through the village and visiting a nearby temple.
