  • Stay in a selection of lovely villas with swimming pools and the "each person has their own room" approach to ensure the comfort of the whole family.
  • Embrace your adventurous side as you cycle through the countryside, climb the Kawah Ijen volcano, snorkel, raft and surf.
Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, each with its own legends, landscapes and rhythms. This 19-day trip takes you to two of the best, blending adventure and downtime in a way that works just as well for parents as it does for teens.

Begin in Bali, the most mythical of the smaller islands. While it’s a global favourite, it still hides pockets of countryside and tradition that feel wonderfully untouched. Think Ubud and the rice paddies of the central-east, then Belimbing, at the foot of Mount Batukaru, where terraced fields ripple towards a sacred temple.

From here, a short ferry crossing takes you to Java and the otherworldly landscapes of eastern Indonesia. The climb up Kawah Ijen is one of the great highlights of the journey. It’s an early start, but worth it: misty rainforest, sulphur porters silhouetted against the dawn and a vast crater lake glowing a tantalising shade of turquoise. A shared achievement, and one that tends to stick with teenagers long after the photos are taken.

Another crossing brings you back to Bali and on to Amed, a laidback fishing village with Mount Agung rising dramatically behind it. Days here slow down naturally. Snorkelling in Tulamben Bay reveals a colourful underwater world just offshore, while your villa offers space for everyone to spread out and relax. The journey continues to Sidemen, where the volcano remains a constant presence on the horizon. Rafting on the Telaga Waja River adds a splash of adrenaline, winding through lush landscapes and terraced rice paddies, before the pace eases once more in Jimbaran Bay. This golden curve of sand marks the entrance to the Bukit Peninsula, close to Uluwatu’s clifftop temple and some of Bali’s best surf beaches. Evenings are made for grilled fish in beachside warungs (authentic eateries), salty hair, tired limbs and sunsets that seem to reinvent themselves night after night.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your family adventure to Indonesia kicks off today, so head to the airport, speed through security and relax in the lounge before your overnight flight to Denpasar, Bali. The flight will take about 18 hours with a stopover en route, arriving the following day.

On arrival, take an hour-long private transfer to Ubud. Tucked away in Bali’s highlands, the island's artistic traditions come to life here. Painters and sculptors have made this place their home and their work goes far beyond souvenirs.

Settle in for three nights in a palm-fringed joglo (a traditional Javanese wooden house), admiring the pretty panoramas or taking a refreshing dip in the pool.

This afternoon, tap into your childlike sense of wonder as you watch colourful kites (known locally as layang-layang) soar across the skies. Then, enjoy a family outing at Bali Bird Park. Spread across nearly five acres, the park is home to over 1,300 birds from 250 different species.

Beyond the park, marvel at the surrounding rice terraces, which ripple across the hills and have been carefully formed by locals over generations.

Wake up bright and early, you have two more days to enjoy Ubud. Here, the locals’ way of life is guided by tradition. As you explore, soak in the haunting rhythm of gamelan music, the heady scent of frangipani flowers and the sweet aroma of clove cigarettes.

Stroll through Ubud's town centre and let yourself be carried away by its vibrant atmosphere. Wander along Jalan Raya Ubud, the main thoroughfare, dipping in and out of galleries, museums and temples – from Pura Gunung Lebah to Pura Saraswati.

Take the teens on a rice field trek just beyond the town and sample some local specialties in warungs along the way.

Spend an evening inspiring any budding entertainers with a traditional Balinese temple performance that blends song, dance and storytelling. Afterwards, stroll through the maze of stalls at the night market, where the bustle of street vendors, the aromas of spicy dishes and bursts of laughter mingle.

Today you head west for around two-and-a-half-hours, trading Ubud’s buzz for Bali’s greener, quieter side. En route, stop at the emerald terraces of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO-listed landscape shaped by generations of farmers. Beyond the rice fields, you’ll meet the local community, enjoy a soak in hot springs, stretch your legs on gentle jungle trails and sit down for lunch at a family-run warung.

Arriving in Belimbing, check in for three nights at an eco-lodge surrounded by rice paddies and rainforest. Your villa is perfectly designed for family travel, with space, privacy and a swimming pool tucked into a lush tropical garden. Volcanoes rise on the horizon, the pace slows instantly and nature takes centre stage.

One of the highlights of your time here is an electric bike ride from Batukaru Temple to the Jatiluwih rice terraces. Starting at one of Bali’s most sacred temples, you’ll cycle for around 45 minutes through jungle, bamboo forests, valleys and peaceful villages, stopping along the way to soak it all in (and eat lunch).

The rest of your time is yours to shape. Fancy turning up the adrenaline? We can arrange canyoning nearby. Prefer something slower? A guided hike with a private guide offers a deeper look at the landscape and daily life in this rural corner of Bali. However you spend it, Belimbing is all about fresh air, freedom and reconnecting as a family.

Today you leave Bali behind, crossing by ferry to eastern Java and travelling through lush plantations to the foot of the Kawah Ijen volcano. You’ll spend the night in a friendly, characterful hotel built in traditional Javanese style – a comfortable base before an early start tomorrow. After a good dinner and some rest, it’s time for lights out.

Before dawn, the adventure begins. With a guide, trek up through rainforest to the crater rim at over 7,500ft high. As the mist lifts, the scene is unforgettable: sulphur smoke curling into the air, a turquoise lake glowing below and surreal blue flames flickering along the crater’s edge. It’s a powerful experience and a real highlight for adventurous teens.

Later that morning, you’ll return to Bali by ferry. En route to Amed, stop at a turtle egg hatchery supporting local conservation efforts, then pause for lunch at a family-run warung. By late afternoon, arrive in Amed and settle into your clifftop villa overlooking Lipah Bay – private pool, sea views and Mount Agung glowing at sunset await.

Amed is one of Bali’s best spots for snorkelling, and today you’ll explore Tulamben Bay with a private instructor. Slip beneath the surface and discover a vibrant underwater world of corals, turtles, rays and tropical fish, all accessible with just a mask and snorkel.

Above the water, Amed’s laidback village atmosphere invites slow wandering between swims, beach time and sunset watching. Optional activities include a sunset cruise with barbecue, scuba diving or even coral reintroduction projects for families keen to give something back. With fewer crowds and a bohemian feel, these days are all about balance: adventure when you want it, total relaxation when you don’t.

Leaving the coast behind, head inland with your private driver to Sidemen. En route, stop for lunch on Virgin Beach, one of Bali’s quieter white-sand beaches, perfect for a final swim before the one-and-a-half-hour drive.

Your home for the next two nights is a private villa with hotel services combining independence with comfort. Expect a private pool, open-air bathrooms and sweeping views over lush hills and rice fields. There’s also a restaurant on site serving both Indonesian and international dishes, plus a spa set within a tropical garden. With Mount Agung often visible in the distance, Sidemen feels deeply connected to Bali’s natural rhythms.

This morning, it’s time for rafting on the Telaga Waja River. With helmets on and an experienced guide leading the way, the whole family tackles a mix of gentle rapids and calmer stretches, drifting through jungle landscapes and past terraced rice paddies, ending with a relaxed lunch by the river.

The afternoon is free to explore Sidemen at your own pace. Wander through rice fields and gardens, visit the local market, cross the yellow bridge at Tukad Yeh Unda or drop into a weaving workshop to see the famous Sidemen songket (handwoven fabric) being made.

Travel south for an hour with your driver to Jimbaran, where you’ll spend four nights in a private villa within a beautifully landscaped estate designed like a traditional Balinese village. Your villa blends contemporary comfort with local style and opens onto a private pool and terrace.

Days here are deliberately unhurried. Relax by the pool, visit the spa or dine at the estate’s joglo-style restaurant serving refined Indonesian cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients. With everything taken care of, this is the perfect place for families to pause, recharge and enjoy simply being together.

Jimbaran Bay is all about easy tropical living. Fishing boats bob in the water, the air smells of grilled fish and evenings are defined by golden sunsets. It’s a wonderful place to slow down.

Venture out to explore the beaches of Uluwatu, each with its own personality. Padang Padang hides beneath a cliff, Suluban reveals itself through a cave and Nyang Nyang rewards those willing to walk with near solitude. Surfers gravitate to Bingin as its swells are considered the best on the island, while Balangan, Dreamland and Melasti offer something for everyone. Whether you’re chasing waves or simply spreading out a towel, these days are yours to shape.

This morning, enjoy a private surf lesson on Jimbaran’s long sandy beach. With consistent waves and expert instructors, it’s an ideal place for beginners and teens keen to build confidence. It’s fun, energising and often a family favourite.

The rest of the day is free to spend as you like. Prefer something different? We can arrange snorkelling around Nusa Penida or simply leave you to enjoy one last afternoon by the pool as the sun dips towards the horizon.

Sadly, all epic adventures must come to an end. Today, a private transfer takes you to Denpasar airport for your international flight home. You’ll travel overnight for around 18 hours, arriving home the following day with sun-kissed skin, shared stories and family memories that will last long after the suitcases are unpacked.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

COOK BALINESE DISHES IN THE RICE PADDIES

This hands-on workshop is as much about culture as it is about flavour. The day starts with a visit to a local market, wandering past colourful stalls piled high with exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices as you gather ingredients for your meal. From there, head to a small village set among the rice paddies, where your host introduces you to traditional Balinese cooking techniques. Then it’s over to you to start chopping, stirring and tasting before sitting down to enjoy what you’ve created. Afterwards, wind down with a gentle walk through the village and a visit to the nearby temple for a moment of calm and reflection.

TRY CANYONING NEAR BELIMBING

Fancy turning up the adrenaline? In a wild canyon close to Belimbing, descend waterfalls with drops up to 65ft-long, scramble through rock pools, slide down natural chutes and abseil beside rushing water with a professional guide. . There’s even time to pause for lunch in the great outdoors before continuing the adventure. A brilliant option for active families with teens who like a challenge.

SAIL AT SUNSET AND ENJOY A BEACH BARBECUE IN AMED

As the day softens into evening, climb aboard a traditional fishing boat and set out along the coast. The sea is calm, the light golden and Mount Agung looms quietly in the distance. After your gentle cruise, return to the beach where candlelight, warm sand and a relaxed barbecue await. Dinner is simple and delicious, celebrating the day’s catch and the easy pace of island life.

DIVE AND HELP REINTRODUCE CORALS TO THE REEF

On Bali’s east coast, an eco-focused dive centre invites you to go beyond simply observing the reef. The experience begins with a lively introduction to coral ecosystems, learning how to identify different species and understand how they grow and regenerate. You’ll then visit a coral nursery to discover restoration techniques before replanting a coral fragment in the water yourself. A meaningful, educational experience that resonates with both adults and curious teens.

SNORKEL AROUND NUSA PENIDA

Travel by speedboat to the dramatic island of Nusa Penida with an experienced guide. Over the course of the day, enjoy three snorkelling sessions at different sites, from shallow reefs to deep drop-offs and open blue waters. Expect vibrant corals, tropical fish, turtles and, if you’re lucky, manta rays gliding past. Lunch is served at a small local warung, rounding off a full day at sea.
