Bali might be one of Southeast Asia’s most popular islands, but there’s still plenty of magic to be found. This 16-day journey focuses on the quieter side of Indonesia, starting in Bali’s inland villages of Belimbing, Munduk and Sidemen, where rice terraces ripple across hillsides, waterfalls hide in jungle folds and daily life moves at a gentler pace.

From here, swap volcano views for island life on Gili Asahan, a tiny tropical escape with gin-clear waters and a wonderfully slow rhythm. Then it’s on to Lombok’s Ekas Peninsula, a rugged and lightly developed stretch of coast where fishing villages sit beside wild beaches and tobacco fields roll inland.

Along the way, you’ll stay in carefully designed eco-lodges and small boutique properties that blend beautifully into their surroundings. Expect organic meals, open-air spaces and meaningful connections with local communities. You’ll wander through plantations, visit an organic farm, snorkel coral reefs, explore hidden temples and even head out to sea with fishermen involved in shark conservation.

It’s proof that even Indonesia’s most popular destinations can still feel intimate. Ready to see another side of Bali?

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Balinese adventure begins today. Head to the airport, speed through security and relax in the lounge before your overnight flight to Denpasar, in Bali. The flight time is around 18 hours, including a stopover, so you’ll arrive the following day.

Touchdown in Denpasar and meet your driver for a scenic transfer to Belimbing, deep in Bali’s rural heart. Spend the next three nights at an eco-lodge surrounded by rice paddies and distant volcano views. Your room blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design elements and opens onto lush gardens and a peaceful pool.

After the journey, stretch out, breathe in the fresh mountain air and ease into island life. Tonight is yours to relax – perhaps with a sunset swim or an early night.

Rise and shine, today is all about exploring Belimbing at your own pace. Wander along narrow paths threading through terraced rice fields and stroll past coffee trees and clove plantations. You’ll likely meet farmers tending their crops and locals who are happy to stop for a chat. Keep an eye out for hidden waterfalls and small temples tucked into the forest. And if you spot smoke rising from a village hut, it could signal palm sugar being made or coffee beans roasting.

Round off the day at a quiet sanctuary like Luhur Mekori Temple, where banyan roots and birdsong create a naturally meditative setting.

Today is all about diving deeper into Belimbing. Head out with a private guide for a glimpse into village life. Wander through the surrounding rice terraces and learn about subak (Bali’s ancient irrigation system).

You’ll also visit a nearby organic farm where locals share their sustainable growing methods before sitting down for a relaxed lunch of fresh, seasonal produce.

Finally, round off the day with a visit to a waterfall and a peaceful Buddhist temple.

Today, you’ll be privately transferred north to Munduk, a mountain village overlooking lakes and deep green valleys. Check in for two nights at a small eco-friendly hotel tucked among rice paddies, with just a handful of bungalows and villas.

Spend a lazy afternoon by the pool, book a soothing massage, join a relaxing yoga session or simply do nothing at all.

At around 3,280ft above sea level, Munduk feels a world away from coastal Bali. Today, you’ll set off on a scenic guided hike through fertile valleys, coffee fields and clove plantations. You’ll pass traditional villages and photogenic waterfalls, meet friendly locals going about their day, and have the chance to savour the swoon-worthy views over Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan.

Wake up bright and early this morning for a private transfer east to Sidemen, a peaceful valley framed by Mount Agung and cascading rice terraces. The journey will take around three hours, so why not tune into our destination-specific playlist en route?

On arrival, check in for two nights at a small, traditional Balinese-style property and then settle in poolside to soak in one of the best volcano views around.

Begin your day exploring Sidemen’s local market which is bursting with fresh produce from the surrounding hills. From here, stroll along the bright yellow Tukad Yeh Unda bridge for some photo-worthy views.

Then tap into your creative side with a ceramics workshop which can easily be arranged by your Concierge. Along the way, keep an eye out for any weaving studios. If one catches your eye, pop inside and you may find a weaver at work on Sidemen’s distinctive songket (a fabric famous for its intricate patterns and rich colours).

This afternoon, head out with your guide to discover the little-known temples of the Gianyar region, including one hidden in a lush river valley and another dedicated to purification rituals. You’ll likely be hungry after your day of exploring, so visit a nearby warung (a local family-run eatery) for simple, yet delicious Balinese dishes.

Wave goodbye to Sidemen; today you’ll be privately transferred to Serangan Pier, where you’ll then hop on a speedboat to Gili Asahan, a tiny island just southwest of Lombok.

Check into your secluded villa and ease into island life. Wander through the private gardens and open-air living spaces, where pared-back interiors let nature take centre stage. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish – swim, snorkel or simply watch the light change over the sea.

Gili Asahan is an island paradise – all white sand beaches, clear turquoise water and colourful coral reefs – and your next two days here are yours to spend as you please.

Spend your time snorkelling straight from shore, stretching out with morning yoga sessions, enjoying sunset swims or doing absolutely nothing. If you like, we can arrange a private snorkelling trip or a sunset cruise.

This morning, you’ll be privately transferred to the pier for a ferry to Lombok. From here, continue on to the remote Ekas Peninsula on the southeast coast.

Your home for the next three nights is a small off-grid resort set within a 136-acre forest reserve, right on a wild stretch of beach. Settle into one of the island’s charming wooden bungalows inspired by traditional Sasak fishing camps and come dinnertime, savour freshly caught seafood and seasonal vegetables, served with ocean views. Bliss.

This corner of Lombok still feels wonderfully untouched. Tobacco fields and corn crops roll inland while empty beaches stretch along the coast.

Spend the day swimming, kayaking, cycling or hiking through nearby villages. You might stop for coffee with locals or wander through markets where daily life plays out much as it has for generations. There’s also time for a spa treatment back at the resort if relaxation is calling.

Today you’ll hop aboard a traditional fishing boat as part of a community-led marine conservation project. Run by an Australian-founded foundation, the initiative supports local fishermen with alternative income while protecting Indonesian shark populations.

Together, you’ll snorkel along Lombok’s southern reefs, home to vibrant tropical fish and healthy coral gardens. It’s a moving way to see the coastline while learning how tourism can support conservation. Expect a memorable day on and in the water.

Sadly, the time has come for your Indonesian adventure to draw to a close. After a final leisurely breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to Lombok airport to board your 22-hour overnight flight back home, touching down in the UK the following day.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

SOAK IN NATURAL SPRINGS AND SAVOUR A BALINESE LUNCH

The journey between Belimbing and Munduk is an experience in itself. With a private driver at the wheel, you’ll stop at natural hot springs to soak in mineral-rich waters before indulging in a traditional Boreh scrub, where local herbs are used to gently revive tired muscles. Next, lunch is served in a traditional Balinese home, where dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients picked straight from the garden – simple, seasonal and full of flavour. A lovely way to slow things down and connect with everyday Balinese life.

ENJOY A SUNSET CRUISE TO GILI ASAHAN

Climb aboard a traditional wooden boat and drift gently away from shore as the sun begins to dip. Your private skipper sets the scene for a golden-hour aperitif, with calm seas, glowing skies and Gili Asahan silhouetted in the distance.

SNORKEL THE REEFS OF GILI ASAHAN

Head out by private boat with a local skipper to explore the reefs and tiny islands just offshore. These little-known spots are perfect for swimming and snorkelling, with clear water, colourful corals and schools of tropical fish.

A FEW DAYS IN KUALA LUMPUR

Flying via Kuala Lumpur? Why not pause for a few nights and explore Malaysia’s eclectic capital, where colonial architecture sits beside soaring skyscrapers like the Petronas Towers. Wander leafy parks, explore buzzing neighbourhoods and dive into a food scene shaped by Malay, Chinese and Indian influences. It’s a city that surprises at every turn – and is a great base from which to ease into Southeast Asia.

A FEW DAYS IN SINGAPORE

Part city, part archipelago, Singapore is far more layered than its futuristic skyline suggests. Look closer and you’ll find heritage quarters, Hindu temples, vibrant street markets and legendary hawker centres. Cycle through neighbourhoods, sample chicken rice and strike up conversations.
