Perched above the banks of the Bohorok River, the Bukit Lawang Eco Lodge is our lodge of choice for adventurous travellers exploring the lush rainforest of the Gunung Leuser National Park.

Katie and Carrie are here to help give you the inside track.

The lodge is located on the far side of the river to Bukit Lawang town, meaning a few wobbly bridge crossings for those souvenir shopping or snacking in town, but prime position for rainforest exploration.

Accommodation is spacious yet simple, and all rooms have a fan and mosquito nets. There are 32 guestrooms at the lodge, linked by cobbled paths winding through the garden, but don't expect a room full of hotel mod cons - here it's all about the experience. The restaurant is in a great position on the river bank, and serves simple, filling meals to fuel guest's rainforest treks.

Travellers who make the journey to Bukit Lawang will not be disappointed - this is one of the best orangutan spotting locations in Southeast Asia. Sightings are never guaranteed, as the healthy population of orangutans in Gunung Leuser are semi-wild, and free to roam the huge national park.

The rainforest here is also home to over 700 other animal species - including the endemic Thomas Leaf Monkey - and an enormous wealth of different plant species. Spend days trekking through the rainforest, river tubing, or simply lazing riverside with a cool beer.
