This small boutique hotel in Canggu on the south coast of Bali is beautifully designed to reflect the artistic and historic influences of the island, and is a real oasis away from the usual coastal crowds.
The 21 suites are all uniquely styled, no doubt thanks to the influence of the art collector owner, and each reflect a different Indonesian period or style. Throughout the property traditional dark wood furniture and ornate paintings -such as on the bedroom window shutters - are placed alongside crisp white bedding, to create tranquil spaces to unwind in. The Dedari Suite and Walter Spies Pavilion both benefit from private plunge pools, while the Rejang Suite has a has an intimate private spa area with a sunken bathtub.
The hotel grounds are dotted with various spots to relax and unwind in, each with its own character and style. Ji Terrace by the Sea serves contemporary Asian fusion foods with views across the ocean; Restaurant Ji at Bale Sutra is housed in an atmospheric 300 year old temple, with a Japanese influenced menu; and Wantilan Agung is a romantic, candlelit spot with a varied Asian menu. There is also the Full Moon BBQ which offers fresh fish and seafood caught by the local fishermen. After dinner, find one of the many little spots to sit and sip a drink in, be that hidden amongst the lush foliage or with panoramic ocean views.
During their stay guests will want to explore the onsite Art Gallery - which is something of a treasure trove of beautiful local pieces -, enjoy an afternoon of pampering in the luxurious spa, and gently meander through the gardens to the pool. There is also plenty to do outside of the hotel grounds, from relaxing on the nearby sandy beaches and haggling in the local markets, to heading north to explore the verdant rice paddies and temples around Ubud.
Why we love it
In an area of Bali now bustling with tourists this is a real oasis away from the chaos.
