‘Sanak’ is Indonesian for ‘family’, a concept that was certainly at the forefront of the French owners minds when they worked with a local family to create the beautiful Sanak Retreat.

There are just ten beautifully curated one and two bedroom bungalows, and a three bedroom villa with private plunge pool at Sanak Retreat, set amidst verdant rice paddies in mountainous northern Bali. All bungalows come with an ensuite bathroom, and each has been uniquely designed, with vintage batik fabrics, luxury linens and antiques, to provide a stay of the highest comfort and style. A tropical garden lies on every doorstep of the teak rooms, and guests can enjoy the beauty of it all, whilst indulging in breakfast on the private terrace each morning.

Cuisine at Sanak Retreat embraces all things Balinese, offering a mouth-watering array of Indonesian delicacies, and a chef who sources the freshest local produce. The ever changing menus also features some of the best dishes from around the globe, as well as fresh grilled seafood, sourced from the north coast.. The communal kitchen table is the perfect way to enjoy sharing dishes, as well as soaking in the stunning backdrop. If you're after a cosier meal, picnics in selected areas of the grounds, or meals in your rooms can also be arranged. The Sanak Bar overlooks the tranquillity of the freshwater infinity pool, and is a peaceful hub to enjoy a drink at the end of the day.

A host of activities can be enjoyed on site including Petanque, a children's games room, as well as a living room and library. The Heal Spa offers a secluded setting to relax and be pampered, with treatments that change with the seasons, and locally produced, organic products utilised throughout. With the help of recommendations from the Balinese co-owner, Sanak can also organise village treks, kayaking on Lake Tamblingan, snorkelling excursions, as well as trips to the local markets. For those after something to get the heart racing, a mountain bike tour or a Garden Treetop Adventure can also be arranged.

Why we love it

Aside being a charming, comfortable and scenic mountain hideaway, Sanak Retreat is a member of the 'pack for a purpose' scheme, where guests are encouraged to pack a few used clothes, books and educational items between the bikinis and boardies, to donate to local communities.
