Just Back: Ella's Cruise on the Flaneuse du Nil

On a research trip to Egypt, our Content Manager, Ella, soaked up the storied sights lining the banks of the Nile onboard the Flaneuse du Nil. Elegant and intimate, this traditional dahabieh sailing boat journeyed from Aswan to Esna, leading her to archaeological hotspots and ancient temples. She explored the sandstone quarries of Gebel el-Silsila, admired ancient carvings in Kom Ombo and dined like a Pharaoh on the sailing boat’s sundeck.

The most beautiful archaeological sites in Egypt

With imposing pyramids and crumbling cities, there’s an abundance of archaeological sites to explore on a trip to Egypt. From Cleopatra and animal-headed gods to pharaohs, sarcophagi and mummies, you don’t need to be an expert Egyptologist to enjoy a glimpse into the country’s past. A cruise down the Nile on a boat such as our very own Steam Ship Sudan takes you to some of the top sites, including Alexandria, Cairo and the Nile Valley.

Tom Barber’s Trip on the Steam Ship Sudan

There are certain types of trips that belong in the pantheon of travel experiences. An African safari would be one, the annual ski holiday another, the Rome city break, the family beach holiday... and I would add, without question, a Nile cruise. In fact I’d go one detail deeper: a Nile cruise aboard the sublime Steam Ship Sudan. The stretch of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan is home to some of the most remarkable sites in antiquity, from the Valleys of the Kings and Queens to the vast temples of Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae.

Just Back: Ben’s Research Trip to Egypt

On a recent research trip to Egypt, our North Africa specialist, Ben, enjoyed the sweet life on board the Flaneuse du Nil, a traditional dahabieh sailing boat. Along with cruising down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, he ate dinner with a view of the Pyramids of Giza, explored ancient tombs and learned about an ongoing scheme to keep the Nile clean. Interested in experiencing Egypt for yourself? Read on to learn more about Ben’s trip and a few of his top travel tips.

Things to do in Cairo

A sprawling city that can sometimes be crowded and chaotic, Cairo is well-loved by winter sunseekers, history-buffs and bargain hunters alike, and it’s most travellers’ first stop when visiting Egypt. Between the sacred Nile, ancient architecture and bustling bazaars, explorers are bound to find gold here. The Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum top the list for most, but there’s a lot more to see and do in Cairo.

Sustainable Tourism in Egypt

Egypt is a tourist magnet – and rightfully so. But with this ever-rising frequency in footfall comes concerns regarding sustainable tourism in Egypt. How do we balance building up the country’s tourism sector post-pandemic while ensuring minimal damage is inflicted on the environment and communities? Luckily, we’ve put our brains to it. Whether you want to celebrate secret spots, help support community-based tourism or promote environmentally-friendly activities, your trip to Egypt can be enjoyed with a clear conscience.

Is it Safe to Travel to Egypt at the Moment?

Last updated: March 2025 by Ben Williams, our Conde Nast Traveler Egypt Specialist Hello, fellow traveller. You may find yourself here because you’ve typed ‘Is it safe to travel to Egypt’ into your search engine. Or perhaps you’ve stumbled upon us in the same way those archaeologists accidentally found hundreds of rock-cut tombs in Egypt in 2021. Either way, you’re in the right place to learn more about this country (particularly if you’re already looking at flights) because it’s always worth doing some research before exploring somewhere new.

Things To Do in the Red Sea

Winter sunseekers, watersports-lovers and diving disciples all know that the Red Sea is the place to be. Year-round sunshine and world-class conditions for everything from snorkelling to kitesurfing mean travellers return to the Red Sea time and again. And while holidays here are all about being outdoors, that doesn’t mean they have to be actively outdoorsy. If leisurely and lazy is your ideal pace, you won’t be disappointed, because there’s always a beach or boat deck ready to be lounged upon.

History of Travel in Egypt

The world’s first tourist destination, Egypt has attracted the great and the good for more than five millennia. 100 years after Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered and Egypt became an independent state, the fascination with this archeology aficionado’s paradise has not dwindled. It remains one of the top holiday destinations across the globe. Explore the history of this arid utopia with our deep-dive timeline,

Luxury Hotels in Luxor, Aswan and on the Nile

Al Moudira Step back in time and soak up the atmosphere in the only palace on the Nile's west bank. Tucked away in rural farmland, Al Moudira is ideally located close to the city of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, between the River Nile and the Theban Mountains. 54 large rooms and suites are set around a peaceful courtyard and feature ornate murals hand painted by the hotel's Lebanese artist owner.

Luxury Hotels in Siwa and the Western Desert

Adrere Amellal Located some 10 miles from the magical oasis town of Siwa and at the base of a huge white monolith known, unsurprisingly, as the White Mountain, Adrere Amellal is dictionary definition remote. There are 40 rooms with rock salt walls and palm frond roofs, as is the traditional Siwan way, and each individually furnished with characterful pieces built by local craftsmen. There is no electricity so the entire hotel is romantically candle-lit at night, with fires blazing in the chillier winter desert months.

Where to Stay around the Pyramids and Red Sea

Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh The Oberoi at Sahl Hasheesh is a luxurious, all-suite resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast. Set in 48 acres of palm-filled grounds about 6 miles south of Hurghada, the hotel's design is inspired by traditional Arabian architecture, with shady marble colonnades and domed pavilions. The suites are located in bungalows scattered around the grounds. All are spacious and have private courtyard-gardens and luxurious bathrooms, while the superior suites also have their own pools.

Culture in Chaotic Cairo

I arrived into Cairo in the blazing Ramadan heat - normally I wouldn't advise going to Egypt during Ramadan however if you are prepared for things to be a little 'out of kilter' it shouldn't otherwise deter you from going. Egypt needs our support. Tourism has virtually dropped off since the 2011 Revolution. The Nile Valley is gloriously empty - not so good for business but incredibly lucky if, like me, you have already visited in the past amidst thousands of tourists.

Best cafes in Cairo

How to choose from Cairo's thousand and one cafes? First of all, there are a lot more than that: the Egyptian capital has far more 'ahawi' (cafes) than there were 'Arabian Nights'.    Secondly, the very definition of 'cafe' needs to be clarified, as the term covers an infinite range of establishments, ranging from elegant salons to streetside camps - a few plastic chairs, a cupboard, a small stove and a fridge staked out in an alley.
