Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Northern Fjords road trip begins this morning with a two hour flight from the UK to Oslo. After landing in Norway, it’s back up in the air for your connecting domestic flight to Alesund, which takes another hour. Arriving in Alesund, collect your bags and pick up your trusty hire car for the trip, which will be ready and waiting for you.

Make the short drive to your hotel – your base for two nights – to check in and freshen up before dinner. To make your first evening more memorable, we can reserve a table at an excellent local eatery, giving you the very best introduction to Norwegian cuisine.

Built across several islands stretching into the sea, Alesund is proudly known as the 'Adventure Capital of the Fjords'. This morning, explore on foot or by bike. As you tour the town, admire its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture (built after a fire destroyed the area in 1904) before visiting the Alesund Art Nouveau Centre to learn more.

Feeling energetic? Have your camera at the ready as you climb the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint for panoramic views across the town and surrounding landscape.

This afternoon, join your guide for an exhilarating wildlife RIB safari. Don waterproofs and life jackets before strapping into a high-speed Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) for an hour-long sea safari to Runde Bird Sanctuary. Keep your eyes peeled for seals, eagles and puffins along the way, as your guide shares stories of the local wildlife.

Adventurous afternoon complete, enjoy a well-earned evening of relaxation and a delicious dinner.

Your road trip gets properly underway this morning as you drive through the stunning Sunnmore Alps to Hjorundfjord, a breathtaking two-hour trip that traverses the Norangsdalen Valley. One of Norway’s narrowest valleys, Norangsdalen boasts some spectacular scenery (think crystal-clear lakes, snow-topped mountains and winding roads) and is among the best routes for admiring the beauty of the fjords. After checking into your hotel for the night, explore Hjorundfjord in all its untouched glory with a two-hour kayak tour. Take to the tranquil water with an experienced guide to really appreciate the dramatic, rugged landscape. If you're lucky, you might even see some of the local wildlife, including eagles, porpoise and otters.

Back on dry land, end the day with a delicious meal in the hotel or a nearby restaurant, sampling more of this region’s cuisine – which as you’d expect, features plenty of seafood and farm-fresh produce.

Start your morning with a gentle hike to soak up your glorious surroundings (either independently or with a guide), before saying goodbye to Hjorundfjord. Today’s journey takes you to Storfjord, a four-hour drive with plenty of impossibly picturesque landscapes along the way.

If you love being behind the wheel (who wouldn’t with these vistas?) and fancy making a full day of it, ramp up your road trip by travelling via the famous Trollstigen (Troll Road), an iconic mountain pass delivers dizzying views as it twists around 11 hairpin bends. While this scenic route adds a couple of hours to your drive, the towering peaks, tumbling waterfalls and dramatic fjords are a rich reward for a bit of daredevil driving.

After a long and unforgettable journey, check into your hotel – your base for the next three nights – and relax for the evening, reflecting on the spectacular sights from today’s drive.

This morning, drive half an hour to Hellesylt to take the tourist ferry to Geiranger (which is hands down the most scenic way to travel). If you can, grab seats on the right-hand side of the upper deck – the prime spot for the most incredible waterfall views. The hour-long ferry ride takes you through the narrowest point of the fjord, past magnificent waterfalls that cascade down the sheer mountain cliffs and along the shoreline dotted with tiny villages.

After a delicious lunch in Geiranger (and a visit to the chocolate shop for sweet souvenirs), make your way to the viewpoint above the village for spectacular views across Geirangerfjord, before a hike along mountainous sheep tracks to a hidden waterfall. Feeling brave? Climb down the cliff and stand behind the waterfall to experience the roaring torrent up close. Then it’s back on the ferry to begin the scenic journey back to your hotel.

Fill up on a hearty breakfast this morning before lacing up your walking boots for a day of hiking. Meet your guide at the hotel and decide on the best hiking route together, depending on the day’s weather and your preferences. Luckily, there are plenty of medium and long hiking trails around the Sunnmore Alps, so you're spoilt for choice when picking a picturesque route. Your guide will be with you every step of the way to make sure you get up and down safely (and to share their expert knowledge). After building a bonfire, it's time to settle down with a packed lunch for a picnic in a picture-perfect natural setting. The best kind of meal, if you ask a local Norwegian.

Once you arrive back at the hotel, you've got the rest of the afternoon to kick back, relax and enjoy your last evening in Norway.

And just like that, your Norway road trip has come to an end. Take in the sights one last time as you make the 30-minute drive back to Alesund airport to drop off your hire car and catch your domestic flight back to Oslo. Here, transfer to your international flight home to the UK – a flight that usually takes just under two and a half hours.
