Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Set off bright and early today to catch your two-hour Eurostar train from London St. Pancras to Bruxelles Midi Station. Then hop on the Intercity-Express and arrive in Cologne just under two hours. For the final part of your journey, board an Intercity train to the north German city of Hamburg, which takes just over four hours.

Upon arrival in Hamburg this evening, check into your stylish hotel for the night and then tuck into a well-earned dinner – either at the hotel or in the city, where our Concierge can recommend the best spots in a city famed for its legendary nightlife.

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, set off nice and early again to catch a train to Gothenburg in Sweden via Denmark's cosy capital, Copenhagen. Your first train takes roughly four and a half hours. Then enjoy a quick one-hour stop in Copenhagen – just enough time for a supply run across the street to the famous Tivoli Food Hall – before boarding your final four-hour train to Gothenburg Central Station.

After checking into your hotel, see a snapshot of this slick Swedish city as you head out for an evening meal, followed by a leisurely potter around the canal-lined centre to stretch your legs after the long journey.

Day three of your London to the Fjords by train trip sees you hopping aboard a train to Oslo. It's a slightly later start this morning, so you have time for a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before boarding your late morning train – coffee in hand – from Gothenburg Central station to Oslo. The journey takes roughly three and a half hours, which is plenty of time to admire the views and enjoy a good book before you arrive in the Norwegian capital in the early afternoon.

After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish. Tomorrow is for exploring the city on a biking tour, so this afternoon you can enjoy some guilt-free downtime at the hotel. Then it's time for dinner in the city, where we can book you a table at the best place in town.

After all the travelling on your trip so far, we've left this morning free for you to enjoy a slower start to the day before your afternoon bike tour of Oslo. With a guide by your side, you’ll pedal along (mostly) flat car-free paths and quiet backstreets, through picturesque parks and along the shore of the city's fjord, with plenty of stops for pictures along the way.

During the six-mile ride, your guide will reveal the history behind the monuments and buildings you pass, share snippets of Norwegian culture and describe modern life in Oslo – the perfect insider's insight into this vibrant hub.

It's back on the train today as you travel from Oslo to Flam, a village in southwestern Norway famed for its fjords. Winding past the country’s lush green hinterlands, expect to do little more than gaze out the window – a luxury you rarely enjoy outside of holidays.

The second stretch of the trip, from Myrdal to Flam, is widely considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. From Myrdal, hop aboard the legendary Flam Railway and travel through the breathtaking Flamsdalen valley, passing 20 tunnels in just under an hour. On arrival, take a private transfer to your hotel, which is your home for the next three nights.

Lace up your walking boots this morning for a hike to a nearby waterfall, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Waterfall watching complete, continue to the village of Aurland, learning about the area’s nature and history as you go, before grabbing a sugary sweet fika (coffee and cinnamon bun) to experience a taste of local life.

Continue by car to the Stegastein viewpoint, which stands 2,100ft above Aurlandsfjord and offers stunning panoramas over the fjords and mountains. This drive follows one of Norway's most famous roads, so the journey may well be one of the high points (literally) of your London to the Fjords by train trip.

From the viewpoint, continue to Skaldegard, a pasture farm which clings to the mountainside and enjoys more fantastic fjord views. Learn more about local life here, before a tour of the historic farm and a tasting of the region’s famous goat’s cheese.

The fjords are the focus today as you climb aboard a private boat and travel across the Naeroyfjord, enjoying front row views of the stunning surroundings. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the wildest and most beautiful branch of the Sognefjord and at its narrowest point is only 800ft wide.

Once you're back on dry land, enjoy a gentle three-and-a-half-mile hike along the old postal route, which immerses you in magnificent scenery. Pass picturesque farms with grazing animals and pristine fjord-side beaches, with few people around to disturb the peace and quiet.

Once you reach the village of Styvi (home to Norway's smallest post office), wander around the farm museum before giving your feet a rest at the cute cafe. Then it's back on the water to catch the electric ferry from Styvi to Flam.

After a leisurely start to the day, pack your bags for your afternoon transfer to the ferry terminal in Aurland, ready to board the ferry to Bergen. The journey takes around five and a half hours, travelling west along Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord, before heading south along the coast. Make sure your camera or phone is fully charged to capture some spectacular holiday snaps. You’ll arrive in Bergen in the evening, so we’ve included packed dinners provided by your hotel hosts to enjoy on board.

On arrival in the charming coastal city of Bergen, make your way to your hotel, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights.

After a hearty breakfast, the day begins with a two-hour tour of the city. Accompanied by a local guide, set off on foot to see the city's top spots, starting at the bustling fish and flower market. From here, head to Saint Mary's church, The Hanseatic Museum and Schotstuene (where you’ll learn how the Hanseatic merchants made their mark on Bergen), as well as the historic Hanseatic quarter.

Next, venture up Mount Floyen on the funicular railway – one of the city's most iconic attractions. From the lofty summit, enjoy sky-high views over the cityscape and the surrounding coast and fjords. Take a short hike along one of the many beautiful trails, followed by a well-earned coffee and pastry in the quaint mountaintop cafe.

Back down at sea level, return to your hotel for a hot shower before heading out for a bite to eat in one of Bergen’s many stylish restaurants.

Today, either hop on a direct flight to the UK (the 'Aerotrain' option) or continue your flight-free trip by boarding the train for the winding journey home. The land-based route retraces your outbound journey, crossing through Sweden and Germany. This three-part rail trip begins with an early morning train from Bergen to Oslo, then onward to the town of Halden, before arriving at Gothenburg Central Station 12 hours later.

It's a long day, but with beautiful views out the window, plenty of snacks to nibble along the way and a few steaming cups of coffee, it’s sure to be another memorable chapter of your London to the Fjords by train trip.

On arrival in Gothenburg, enjoy a tasty dinner before retiring to bed for an early night, ready for another day of travelling tomorrow.

On the penultimate day of your trip, journey from Gothenburg to Hamburg, leaving in the morning and arriving ten and a half hours later. With your holiday nearing its end, make the most of the train’s peace and quiet, where you’ll have little to do but savour the passing scenery.

In Hamburg, check into your hotel and enjoy dinner in the city, raising a toast to your train trip. Remember, Hamburg is arguably the nightlife capital of Europe, so if you wanted one final swansong before returning home tomorrow, this is the place to perform it.

Sadly, today’s the final day of your rail adventure. Depart from Hamburg in the morning, arriving in Frankfurt in the early afternoon before travelling on to Bruxelles Midi to catch your Eurostar train back to London St. Pancras. The journey today takes ten hours in total, reaching London this evening – in time for dinner back home and a glass of bubbly to celebrate the success of your flight-free trip away.
