Crete is neat, and Daios Cove might just be our favourite place on the island, particularly for families.
Sitting pretty in the cove of the same name, the minimalist but elegant Daios Cove Resort and Luxury Villas (to give the hotel its formal name) consists of 300 rooms, suites and villas overlooking the sea.
The rooms and suites are all open plan and many have their own sea water plunge pools, while the 39 one-, two- and three-bedroomed villas are perfect for families and come with complimentary access to one of the hotel's team of concierges for booking activities and restaurants.
Speaking of restaurants, there are three in total. Pangea is the place for breakfasts and buffet suppers; Taverna is just that - a Greek-style restaurant serving local specialities and Ocean Restaurant serves contemporary Italian cuisine (and breakfasts for villa residents). Once the nippers are tucked up in bed and the baby sitter installed there are three bars in which to enjoy a no doubt well-earned drink. The bar staff in the Ocean Bar and Crystal Box both rustle up a mean evening cocktail and there's also a Beach Bar.
This being a family-friendly hotel there is an excellent kids club on site where little ones are looked after in the Crèche Club and four to 12 year olds can muck around to their hearts content in the well-equipped Children's Club.
Meanwhile mums and dads can retire to the serenity of the spa which has several treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, Thai massage studio, two sea water pools (one used for hydro-massage) and Technogym.
Activities include a range of watersports from water skiing to wakeboarding and diving, and the hotel even has access to a selection of speed boats and yachts for day charter.
Daios Cove is the sort of family friendly hotel that avoids being parent unfriendly - a difficult balancing act!
