Everyone loves a Greek island. But here at Original Travel, we’re equal advocates of the country’s magical and mysterious mainland. We’ve long banged the drum for the twin peninsulas of Halkidiki and the Peloponnese. But now, we’re all about Epirus – Greece’s resident rugged region that combines a predictably beautiful coastline with some of Europe’s most dramatic scenery – and Meteora holidays, home to the extraordinary rock formations forged by Mother Nature over millions of years, just a little further inland. They were always destined to be works of art. But before the rest of the world could appreciate them,
man (or monk) thought to one-up her with the addition of Byzantine monasteries in the late 900s. Balanced across 24 pillars, each monastery was built by the hands of dedicated monks who climbed the rock faces – ropeless – and then used baskets and winches to haul up the rest of their building materials. Today, they stand as a testament to human resilience, faith and ingenuity, having survived Turkish invasions and some of the harshest conditions. Of course, this being Greece, the antiquity rivals pretty much anywhere.
