Situated in the heart of Oia, the ‘capital’ of Santorini, Canaves Oia is a supremely luxurious option on an island that has luxury down pat.
As with so many of the hotels in Santorini, the vibe here is white and minimalist, but the extremely tasteful and comfortable suites (no mere rooms here) are potentially best in show. Transformed from 17th caves burrowed into the rock face, the suites feature private verandas with suitably jaw-dropping views, al fresco dining areas and then the odd piece of darker furniture to break up the lines. The higher spec suites also have plunge pools while the River Pool Suite even has - as the name suggests - a riverine plunge pool.
If you can drag yourself away from your room, head to the infinity pool, sun deck and Infinity Pool Bar Restaurant, which are at the heart of the hotel. Here you can enjoy breakfast (although to temptation to have it served on your al fresco terrace will be strong) or make the most of the all-day dining menu for a light lunch or supper, or a cocktail or glass of delicious local wine in one of the most romantic spots on the island. Speaking of Santorini wine, it can be excellent, and Canaves Oia can organise a private tasting with a local expert on a private terrace one evening. Other spoiling indulgences on offer include spa treatments at the small hotel spa, or massages by the top class therapist in your suite.
Why we love it
While to a certain extent Canaves Oia conforms to the Santorini standard of white minimalism, it's the service here that's stand-out. Nothing is too much trouble.
