Abaton Island Resort & Spa is an ultra-stylish hotel overlooking the sea. The hotel has 152 rooms and suites, almost half of which have private pools. Rooms without a private pool share one with four others, perfect for a larger group or family. No expense has been spared in decorating the rooms, each of which has a private balcony or terrace. Walls are so white they gleam and enormous carved headboards from India and driftwood sculptures add interest to what could otherwise be quite ascetic rooms. King-size beds are topped with mattresses that would satisfy even the most pea-sensitive princess and bathrooms are stocked with the same Elemis products used in the spa. 14 room categories range from deluxe guestrooms with in room baths to sea front villas with private terraces and pools.

Food at the resort is served in five different restaurants. A copious buffet breakfast is served in the main restaurant - think crepes, waffles, fruit, and yogurts - and other restaurants around the resort serve a variety of cuisines inspired by the land and sea around Crete. Depending on what you fancy, you could try perfectly prepared seafood from "Wow" Sushi & Steak, traditional Cretan dishes from Elemes, fresh seafood from Bony Fish, or international snacks at the poolside bar C'est la Vie.

The hotel's Elemis spa is a refuge for tired and weary souls, where guests can reax in the steam room, sauna and heated indoor pool. There is also a beauty salon and gym. Treatments at the spa include facials which truly leave the skin glowing like you've actually had 12 hours sleep and pleasingly vigorous massages.

Why we love it

Abaton has sunsets that could rival even Santorini!
