On a recent research trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar, our Africa specialist, Jamie, ventured to the regions’ most scenic safari hotspots. She ventured off-road through the Ndutu plains, enjoyed night-time game drives, witnessed a prowling lion pride and decompressed in the beautiful Baraza spa. When you think of luxury African safaris, Tanzania deserves to be up there. Client and guest blogger Malcolm Durham shares his very honest thoughts on climbing Kilimanjaro, a once in a lifetime holiday experience - and how the skills required to achieve something so arduous can translate into everyday life... A hill and back Kilimanjaro is an irritating hill. It's not 6,000 metres high it's 5,895m. That's not 20,000 feet it's 19,341. There are no views to inspire you and the food that can be carried up there is dull, dull, dull.

When you think of Tanzania and its Ngorongoro Crater, which I've just returned from, I am sure that 92% (precise, expert figure here) of those who haven't been before would not immediately associate either with the Scottish Highlands. But believe it or not, the similarities are uncanny. What's weird is that a holiday to the Scottish Highlands is not something I would normally leap at, I'd even go so far as to say it is something I would actively avoid.

Through a Q&A with Original Travel, Alex Walker shares his experience and knowledge of a safari holiday in Tanzania... What is the weirdest thing/moment you've ever encountered on safari? Legend has it that the name Zanzibar comes from the words the first Arabic speaking Omani sailors shouted out after discovering this archipelago in the Indian Ocean: 'Zayn z'al barr!' meaning 'Fair is this land!' Poetic but unfortunately a little less plausible than 'Zinj El Barr', meaning 'land of the black people', in reference to the slaves uprooted from Africa to be sold overseas along with the ivory, gold and spices exported from these islands from as early as the eighth century.
