This blue-shuttered, ivy-clad boutique hotel is quintessentially French and located in the heart of picturesque Brantôme, its position is fantastic.
There are 19 rooms at Moulin de l'Abbaye, including an apartment and the brand new Caractere room with private terrace and heated Jacuzzi overlooking the Dronne. The rooms are spread out across the three old buildings that make up the hotel, are incredibly spacious, have free Wi-Fi access and are elegantly decorated.
The restaurant is housed in the old mill, which is now the main part of the building, and offers true French gastronomy in a spectacular setting overlooking the Dronne river. There are also two highly recommended restaurants nearby - Au Fil du Temps, a typical French bistro in Brantôme, and Au Fil de l'Eau, a fish brasserie.
Brantôme is often referred to as the 'Venice of the Périgord' for its waterfront location and sense of history. The 16th Century Pont Coudé is opposite the hotel and links the abbey (founded in 769 by Charlmagne) with its monastery garden and medieval tower. There is also a weekly market selling local produce, injecting hustle and bustle into this otherwise sleepy provincial village in the Dordogne. For the more active minded, there are plenty of activities on offer in the Dordogne, such as golf, hiking, fishing and visiting the Lascaux Caves.
Why we love it
Literally translating as 'Mill of the Abbey', this boutique hotel is brimming with history.
