Put the pedal to the metal in La Gacilly, a postcard-perfect commune on the Aff River. From here, venture into the fabled forest of Broceliande, where the legend of King Arthur was set.

Then, turn towards the coast with two nights in Trinite-sur-Mer, gateway to the standing stones of Carnac, a fascinating collection of Neolithic remains dotted along a two-and-a-half-mile stretch of land.

Surge forward in time in characterful Combrit, where you can delight in a decadent dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Seafood fiends, this is the place to try it, before continuing on to Trebeurden, the ideal push-off point for a cruise along the Pink Granite Coast – paired with some lessons in nautical know-how.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Pack your bags, your rugged road trip along Brittany’s coast starts today. Once you’ve breezed through airport security and perused the offerings in duty-free, slip away to the lounge for a moment of calm before your departure. Flights to the region’s capital, Rennes, take just over an hour – ideal for powering through a podcast or reading a solid chunk of your current book.

When you land, collect your hire car and set off on the hour-long drive to La Gacilly, your base for the next two nights. After a spot of unpacking and post-journey-stretching, take to the flower-lined streets in search of dinner. Your Concierge will be on hand to point you in the right (by which we mean the most delicious) direction.

Leave the real world behind this morning in favour of the land of legends. We’re talking about the Broceliande Forest – or Paimpont Forest, as it’s officially named – depicted in the tales of King Arthur. Birthplace of the Fairy Viviane, Merlin and Lancelot, this leafy landscape will have you chasing the shadows of heroic knights and enchanting maidens.

Afterwards, continue your immersion in the local lore by visiting the tiny village of Trehorenteuc, before heading a little further down the road to the Chateau de Trecesson, a majestic Medieval castle.

Return to modernity in style tonight with a delicious dinner at your hotel’s gourmet restaurant. Food comas pending...

Don your sunglasses, pack your bags and buckle up for the hour-long drive to La Trinite-sur-Mer this morning, a charming commune perched on the Gulf of Morbihan. Before reaching the shimmer of the sea, you’ll wind between scenic stretches of moorland and dense bursts of forest.

When you arrive, check in for two nights before freshening up and heading out to wander by the half-timbered houses and tall trees lining the quaint streets of the village. Then, round off your day with a tasty dinner and a crisp glass of local cider.

Today, you’re stepping back in time. If you thought the legend of King Arthur was a throwback, just wait ‘til you see the standing stones of Carnac. Dating back over 7,000 years, these UNESCO-listed menhirs (large upright stones) from the Neolithic period stand slightly apart from one another, forming an intriguing landscape you can easily weave through.

The two main sites (Menec and Kermario) alone feature around 3,000 stones spread over nearly two-and-a-half miles – so it’s safe to say you’re bound to reach your step goal today.

Turn up the tunes, it’s time to set off on the hour-and-a-half-long drive to Combrit, where you’ll settle down for two nights in another characterful hotel.

Spend your time here basking in the beauty of bygone days. From its pretty port to its sun-bleached shoreline, Combrit is a good-old-fashioned coastal charmer. Scattered between the village, the countryside and the sea, it’s packed full of chapels, lighthouses and colourful clusters of docked boats – all of which you can explore with a quintessentially Breton crepe in hand.

One evening, you’ll also be able to settle down for dinner in a sumptuous Michelin-starred restaurant where seafood reigns supreme. Time to tuck in.

Ready for another road trip? Bid Combrit a fond farewell as you hop back in the car today to drive around two hours to Trebeurden, a small seaside town perched on the picturesque Pink Granite Coast.

When you arrive, check in for two nights in a charming little property, then lay your bags to rest and turn your thoughts towards dinner...

The name of the game today: exploring the Pink Granite Coast. Stretching roughly six miles from Brehat to Trebeurden, this copper-tinged coast is a landscape of granite blocks sculpted by erosion.

While they can be seen from the beaches, it’s far more fun (in our humble opinion) to see them from the sea. You’re on holiday, after all. So, hop aboard a traditional sailboat for another perspective on this stunning stretch of coast as you cruise towards a string of islets known as Ile Grande.

While you’re on board, you’ll also be able to take part in the manoeuvres of the boat and learn about the basics of navigation. When you’re not exercising your nautical prowess, head to the deck to try and spot some funny shapes in the rocks, they’re sure to tickle you – well – pink.

Hit the road one last time today for the drive to Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, a pleasant fishing village on Brittany’s north coast. The journey takes just under two hours and passes through some seriously scenic spots. If stomachs start to rumble along the way, pick up some sable Breton (local shortbread) and stop to take in the view while biting in.

Pull up to your hotel this afternoon and check in for your final two nights. Then, take the opportunity to toast to the last leg of your trip by heading to the best restaurant in town (your Concierge will lead the way... ).

Tuck into a delicious spread of buttery Breton pastries this morning before heading inland to the Medieval village of Dinan for a private tour.

Overlooking the Rance River, Dinan is full of eccentric attractions and storybook scenes. Take to the town to stroll along almost two miles of ramparts, before ducking into the iconic Chateau de Dinan, built by Duke John IV in the 14th century.

Afterwards, end your visit by wandering down to the small marina at the edge of town, where you can watch the waves crash against the shore while indulging in another sugar-dusted sweet treat (after all, pastries are a matter of pride here).

Sadly, the time has come to pry yourselves away from the Breton coast. Enjoy a leisurely morning, then head to the airport in Rennes, return your hire car and settle into the lounge before departure. Flights back to the UK take just shy of two hours, putting you on UK soil before the sun sets on your fantastic French foray.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

CAP D'ERQUY BY ELECTRIC BIKE

Before pulling into Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, enjoy a pleasant pitstop in Cap d’Erquy, a protected natural site featuring pink sandstone cliffs, magnificent wild moorland and dramatic dunes. Hop on an electric bike and whizz through these beautiful bits of coast, before pulling up at a few of the historical guardhouses and old quarries dotted above the clifftop – with plenty of opportunities to fill your camera roll.

PRIVATE TOUR OF SAINT-MALO

The fortified port city of Saint-Malo boasts sweeping views of the Channel Islands. Home to a tumultuous maritime past, it now buzzes with a strong local appetite for regattas and other sea-centric events. All around the city, the high ramparts – originally built to protect it – offer a panoramic walkway. Inside these walls, you can stroll through the classically cobbled streets that wind between the sailors’ houses and craftsmen's workshops.
