Why We Love It

A design hotel housed in a restored 16th-century palazzo tucked away in the charming Dorsoduro district and one of our favourites in Venice.

Belmond Hotel Cipriani

In a city where space is a luxury, the Belmond Hotel Cipriani has no rivals. It is located in historic buildings surrounded by gardens at the tip of Giudecca Island, and enjoys wonderful views across the water to St. Mark's Square.

Giudecca was once full of gardens which provided a peaceful retreat for the Venetian nobility, and the Belmond Hotel Cipriani fulfils a similar function for modern-day visitors wishing to escape the crowded main island. There are a variety of rooms overlooking the gardens or lagoon, and two 15th-century palazzos house some truly stunning suites - the ultimate rooms with a view.

Facilities include an Olympic size swimming pool with filtered seawater, and a clay tennis court - the only one in central Venice. The hotel even has its own vineyard, which still produces wine for the Belmond Hotel Cipriani's cellars. The restaurants offer formal and informal dining, either indoors or outdoors on terraces or in the gardens. In-room dining is also available, and there is a cocktail bar and an elegant piano bar.

Why We Love It

One of the great hotels of the world, the Belmond Hotel Cipriani was opened in 1958 by Giuseppe Cipriani, the founder of Harry's Bar.

Bauer Il Palazzo

Just a two minute walk from St Mark's Square and located slap bang on the canal, Bauer il Palazzo's position is fantastic.

The 74 rooms are adorned with gilt mirrors, carved stucco ceilings and elaborately patterned silk wallpapers, all in keeping with the 18th century splendour of the Palazzo. Most rooms have a balcony overlooking the canal below and all have large, luxurious Italian marble bathrooms.

Guests can enjoy an impressive view of the city while having breakfast at Settimo Cielo, literally translating as seventh floor, whilst the restaurant De Pisis offers Mediterranean specialities with an Asian twist and has an outdoor terrace on the Grand Canal. Il Palazzo has two bars: Red Bar Canale plays live music every night and the livelier B Bar is perfect for aperitifs and cocktails in the evening.
