Spring in New York is an underrated sweet spot. While the Big Apple typically tempts travellers with its magical winters and sizzling summers, spring promises the gift of crowd-free fun. As the weather begins to warm, coats and winter blues are shed, cherry blossoms explode to life and rooftop bars reopen. Tick off the city’s classic corners (hello, Times Square) and join in with the seasonal festivities. Ready to start planning? Read on for our guide to spring in New York...
The weather during spring in New York switches up on a daily basis, from sunshine to showers and back again. This makes for tricky packing, so we suggest bringing lots of layers you can take on and off (plus a waterproof coat). Expect temperatures of around two to ten degrees Celsius in March, seven to 17 in April and 13 to 22 in May. That being said, New York has a serious case of weather whiplash thanks to the jet stream – so take these numbers with a pinch of salt and check the forecast before you leave.

New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is nothing short of iconic. Not only is it the world’s oldest – dating back to 1762 – but it even predates Ireland’s first celebration by a whopping 169 years. Every March 17th, from around 11am to 4.30pm, Fifth Avenue transforms into a sea of green as people flock from far and wide to celebrate Irish pride. Expect a feast for the senses, from marching bands and bagpipers to Irish dancers and floats, as you make your way from 44th to 79th street. We recommend arriving early to snag a spot near St. Patrick’s Cathedral for prime photo opportunities.
It's impossible to experience spring in New York without coming face to face with the city’s fabulous flowers. A simple stroll through Central Park will treat you to bloom upon bloom of pastel pink cherry blossoms, with the spectacle at its best in April. For another floral fix, head to the annual flower show at Macy’s Herald Square to wander among immersive, sweet-smelling displays.

If your visit coincides with Easter, it’s only right to take part in New York’s cherished tradition – the whimsical Bonnet Parade. Each Easter Sunday, Fifth Avenue is transformed into a sea of extravagant bonnets and costumes, showcasing anything from bumblebees to bunnies. The heart of the festivities is around St. Patrick’s Cathedral, so don your best bonnet, secure a spot early and soak in the festive spirit.
Treat your taste buds to a culinary world tour at the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, an annual celebration of all things edible. We suggest you arrive hungry, as the streets are laden with delights from Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa, painting a delicious picture of New York’s cultural tapestry. Full to bursting? Fear not, as the fun doesn’t end there. The festival also promises folk dancing, local bands, craft stalls and face painting.
