Towering over Old Delhi, the magnificent and prominent Jama Masjid is one of the most iconic - and largest - mosques in India. Take a step back in time and visit the centuries-old Mughal-era mosque, which has been standing since 1650 and is still in use today. The mosque itself is an architectural wonder made of red sandstone and marble, and was Emperor Shah Jahan's last extravagance before he fell ill. After deciding to make Delhi his new capital, Shah Jahan built Jama Masjid as a central place of worship, and for symbolic reasons, he made sure that the mosque was built higher than his palace.
Head to Jama Masjid in the morning to catch a glimpse of the sun rising behind the magnificent minaret towers and domes, which can be seen from miles away. The Jama Masjid Mosque is still an active place of worship and houses artefacts and scriptures of the Prophet Mohammad and an ancient transcript of the Quran dating back thousands of years.
