Spend two months travelling through Sweden, Iceland and Norway exploring all that these glorious Nordic countries have to offer. From cross-country skiing in Norway and coastal adventures in Sweden to whale watching and fly fishing in Iceland, this is a sabbatical you’ll never forget.

Spend the first week of your Arctic adventure in Svalbard, home to Norway’s most northern town, Longyearbyen. Enjoy kayaking, hiking and hunting for fossils in Svalbard’s vast outdoors, as well as boat trips to explore the Greenland Sea. The second part of the trip will be on the island of Spitsbergen, where you’ll put your adventure skills (and stamina) to the test with a two-week cross-country skiing trip. After this unforgettable wilderness experience, head south to Gothenburg in Sweden where you’ll explore the wonderfully rugged coastline and colourful houses along the west coast. For the next stage of your sabbatical, hop aboard a train from Oslo through mighty fjords and snow-capped peaks to Flam.

Then, for the final stint of your northern adventure, you’ll wind up in Iceland, with plenty of dips in thermal springs, whale watching escapades and waterfall chasing.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Arctic adventure awaits today, so head to the airport for your indirect flight to Svalbard, with a layover in Oslo. Touching down around five to six hours later, take a private transfer to Longyearbyen - the world’s northernmost town and the first week-long stop on your luxury adventure sabbatical.

While staying in Svalbard, enjoy the great outdoors on kayaking and hiking excursions, as well as hunting for fossils. A boat trip gives you the best possible perspective of the surrounding Greenland Sea, while an unforgettable dog-sledding trip will round off the first part of your northern adventure. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a polar bear in the distance (Svalbard is home to around 3,000 of these iconic predators).

After a thrilling first week of easing into the Arctic world, it’s time for the second part of your adventure sabbatical, also on Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Put your adventure skills to the test on a two-week cross-country skiing trip covering 111 miles of atmospheric Arctic landscape. Travelling in a group, each team member is expected to pitch in, pulling the equipment and gear in a pulk (sled) and aiming to cover between nine and 12 miles a day. This is exactly how the Edwardian polar adventurers travelled, and fittingly, the greatest of them all was Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian.

After your unforgettable cross-country ski trip, head south on a three-hour flight to Oslo, where you’ll board a one-hour flight to Sweden's vibrant second city, Gothenburg. It’s time for a change of pace on your luxury sabbatical.

After a day exploring the city and enjoying fika (that's a coffee break to you and me, and something of a Swedish obsession), pick up your hire car and begin a road trip along Sweden's wonderful west coast. Heading up the coastline, admire the low-lying rocky formations and colourful houses in beautiful Bohuslan. Spend your time enjoying kayaking, biking and seafood safaris before ending your Swedish sojourn in the Koster Islands – a captivating car-free archipelago.

Once back on the mainland, continue driving north to Oslo, ready for the next chapter of your adventure.

From Oslo, hop on a boat for a sightseeing cruise around the surrounding fjord before catching a train north to the village of Flam - a scenic journey taking around six hours.

Located at the head of Aurlandsfjorden and beside Sognefjord, Flam has a spectacular setting. One of its main (and must-do) attractions is the 12-mile mountain railway that glides into the peaks surrounding the town. This is a great base for more fjord exploration, including a waterfall hike, stunning views at Stegastein viewpoint and storytelling at the old farmstead, Skaldegard.

From Flam, take the five-hour ferry all the way to Bergen – the best way to see the region’s spellbinding landscapes is from the water, after all.

After catching a two-and-a-half hour flight to Reykjavik, spend your first day in Iceland exploring the city and enjoying a dip in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon. Then, it’s time to embark on your epic Iceland road trip. From the comfort of your hire car, head out into the wilderness to see the magnificent sights of the Golden Circle loop, as well as Skaftafell Waterfall, the fabulous fjords and the mighty Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

Next, your journey will take you north to Husavik, where you’ll swap the car for a boat and enjoy whale watching - an incredible chance to experience the magic of these ocean-dwelling giants up close. Hop back into your car, and drive for almost three hours to Deplar for the finale to your sabbatical.

Spend the next four days of your luxury adventure sabbatical enjoying activities from surfing and hiking to riding and whale watching, Deplar offers every kind of adventurous pursuit. Explore Puffin Island, take a RIB tour or go fly fishing in icy Icelandic rivers - the choice is yours. If one thing’s for certain, these final few days won't be forgotten in a hurry.

Finish up your once-in-a-lifetime sabbatical with a trip to Snaefellsness Peninsula, where diverse and fascinating landscapes have served as the setting for many Norse sagas, as well as Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. Glittering fjords and powerful volcanic peaks are just a few of the natural treasures you can marvel at here.

After a fitting finale, your sabbatical sadly has to come to an end. Make your way back to Reykjavik, where you’ll catch your three-hour flight home, arriving back in the UK with enough memories to last a lifetime.
