The ‘Gateway to the Fjords,’ Bergen is perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding nature, waterfalls and misty mountain peaks of Norway’s southwest coast. As the country's second-largest city, it certainly holds its own, boasting buckets of provincial charm and stellar panoramic views. On top of this, the harbour district, Bryggen, is the first Norwegian site to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage list (sorry, Oslo).

With so much to shout about, it only makes sense to start your five-day Scandinavian sojourn here, exploring Bergen’s colourful streets before indulging in a traditional Norwegian spa experience. If rain threatens, don’t fret. Simply bundle into one of the many art museums dotted around the city and experience the city’s stellar culinary scene, which celebrates Nordic dishes and fresh seafood.

Having buddied up with Bergen, cruise through the fjords to Os, where you’ll spend your final two nights. Once a stopover and holiday destination for local traders, this kommune (commune to us Brits) enjoys a prime location, flanked by three fjords: Fusafjorden to the east, Bjornafjorden to the south and Lysefjorden to the west. While you’re here, indulge in sumptuous spa experiences and sample some more fantastically fresh fish before jetting back home, primed for an onslaught of questions about where you got that radiant glow.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your five-day Scandinavian sojourn begins today. Head to the airport, breeze through security and settle into the lounge as you prepare for your speedy two-hour flight to Bergen – just enough time to devour a short book or run through a couple of podcasts. When you arrive, you’ll be met by a private driver, ready to transfer you to your charming hotel in the heart of Bergen, your base for the next two nights.

This evening, unpack, unwind and venture out into the city for your first taste of Bergen’s brilliant cuisine. Torrfisk (dried cod), anyone?

While you’re in Bergen, don't miss Bryggen – yes, the names are confusingly similar. Bryggen refers to the postcard-perfect district of colourful buildings along the harbour, where Bergen's (and Bryggen’s, for that matter) fishing and trade industries flourished between the 14th and 18th centuries.

As you wind your way through this lively labyrinth, pass a slew of inviting souvenir shops and the hidden park in Ovregaten before reaching the Hanseatic Museum, where you’ll discover what life was like for German merchants during their Medieval glory days. Afterwards, breathe in the fresh sea air as you walk along the walls bordering the city – an excellent way to find your bearings.

When you’ve had your fill of the city’s rich history and culture, retreat to a private floating sauna to unwind – Norwegian style. Sweat it out while enjoying the beautiful backdrop of steep, ice-capped hills, then (if you’re craving something more extreme) swap the sauna’s warm embrace for a dive into the icy waters nearby. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be taking part in a long-running Nordic ritual that awakens the senses and purifies the body.

Bid farewell to Bergen this morning as you hop aboard an express boat and set sail for Os. Along the way, enjoy your first introduction to the fabulous fjords, as the route spans all the way to the edge of Bjornefjord, where you’ll settle down for the next (and, sadly, final) two nights of your trip.

When you arrive, shake off any travel stiffness with a 50-minute treatment or massage at your hotel's spa. And since no one’s ever heard of being too relaxed (surely?), follow this up with another tranquil treat: a traditional bathing ritual.

Today, hiking is the name of the game. Just southwest of Os lies the short summit of Liafjellet, a frosty forest hill which is crisscrossed by a number of excellent trails. Beginning in the town centre, venture out to begin your ascent of this modest mountain, which takes about three hours and has an altitude difference of 920ft. Once you reach the top (hooray), take in striking panoramas of the surrounding mountains and vibrant villages – a satisfying end to your Scandinavian sojourn.

Sadly, like Dorothy, your adventures in the land of Os (get it?) end today. Savour the region’s cuisine with a hearty breakfast before your private transfer to Bergen airport this morning, ready for your return flight back to the UK. Land in the afternoon, refreshed, rejuvenated and already reminiscing about your time in serene Scandinavia.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

PRIVATE TOUR OF BERGEN

If you’re craving a more intimate introduction to Bergen, embark on a private tour of the city with a local guide, charting a course from the historic district of Bryggen to the bustling fish market. As you go, enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Norway's most captivating city, uncovering its fascinating history (which dates back to the 11th century), its cod fishing legacy and the warmth of its people.

RIDE THE MOUNT FLOYEN FUNICULAR

Craving an elevated escape? You’re in luck. Bergen's attractions stretch all the way to Mount Floyen, which rises more than 984ft above sea level. You can reach the summit in just ten minutes on the funicular, where a glass-enclosed observation deck overlooking the city awaits. From here, hike through the woods along a winding trail, crossing the Tubakuba – a stunning cliffside cabin designed by architecture students, whose curved wooden entrance looks like a black hole (cue novelty photos of being sucked inside).

A TRADITIONAL NORWEIGAN FEAST

In the heart of Bryggen, we can arrange a three-course dinner in a charming 18th-century wooden house by candlelight. The chefs here offer an inventive take on traditional Norwegian cuisine, showcasing local culinary delights.
