Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Norway – Oslo – Geilo – Aurland – Osoyro
100% customisable for you
Rally the troops, because your Norwegian adventure begins this morning. Head to the airport, breeze through security and kick back in the lounge before boarding the two-hour flight to Oslo. If the window views aren’t enough to keep the youngsters entertained, check out our family packs – filled with tailored destination information and games, they’re sure to pique their curiosity about Norway.
Once you touch down, hop on the train to your centrally located hotel, where you’ll spend the next two nights. Settle rumbling bellies with a meal at the hotel, or ask your local Concierge to secure seats for the whole family at one of Oslo’s many delightful dining spots.
Rise bright and early (if the children allow it) and tuck into your first Norwegian breakfast. Once fuelled for the day, head out and make the most of your Oslo Pass. Giving you free access to more than 30 museums and tourist sites, use of public transport and ferry rides to the islands in the Oslo fjord, there’s no better way to discover the city’s blend of urban buzz and natural beauty.
Somewhat surprisingly for a capital city, Oslo is largely covered in forest. The Nordmarka wilderness area – Oslo's green lung – is easily accessible by public transport and is a vast outdoor playground for all ages. There are several family-friendly hiking trails, including a walk up to Grefsenkollen, a hill offering panoramic views over the city and the fjord. It’s an ideal introduction to Norwegian nature, with a cafe at the end of the route for some well-earned refreshments.
It’s time to hit the road. Gather the youngsters, collect your hire car and set off for the 135-mile drive to Geilo. We recommend winding through the mountains and stopping off in one of the charming towns of Flesberg, Rollag, Nore or Uvdal for a scenic journey. There’s plenty to explore, and it’ll give you all a chance to stretch your legs (and maybe even settle a few back-seat quarrels).
The final stretch takes you through Hallingdal, a valley shaped like a big smile across south-east Norway. Upon arrival in Geilo, a national park mountain village, settle into your family room and unwind, ready for tomorrow’s action-packed day.
Halfway between Oslo and Bergen, Geilo is a picture-perfect Norwegian town: a quaint train station, charming shops and a handful of hotels scattered in the hills. But it’s not just about looks – Geilo is also an outdoor lover’s paradise and the gateway to the mountains.
You’re using pedal power to explore today, so hop on your bikes and head out to tackle the Flow Motion trail. A chair lift will take you to the summit and start of the trail, which weaves downhill through a series of turns and jumps. This rollercoaster-like route is obstacle-free and suitable for all levels, so it’s a race to the bottom to see who takes today’s cycling crown.
After biking comes hiking. At the entrance to Hallingskarvet National Park, stone steps and a dirt path lead to the summit of Prestholtskaret, promising sweeping views of the park’s diverse landscape. The route is relatively short (yet steep in parts), making it perfect for little legs that love to roam freely.
Your family road trip continues this morning, so pack up the car again and set off on a two-hour drive from Geilo to Aurland, your base for the next two nights. After checking into your hotel and refuelling with a tasty lunch, hop back in the car for a scenic journey along one of Norway’s most remarkable roads.
Long, winding and breathtakingly beautiful, Aurlandsfjellet is only accessible in summer, when snow can still be spotted along the roadside (hence its local nickname, the ‘Snow Road’). Now a designated National Tourist Route, it snakes for almost 30 miles between the fjord towns of Aurland and Laerdal. You can decide how far to drive along this dizzying route past shimmering glaciers and jagged peaks. But don’t miss the spectacular Stegastein observation point (around eight-and-a-half miles from Aurland) for unparalleled views across Aurlandsfjord. The road threads through the famous Laerdal tunnel, one of the longest in the world at just over 15 miles. Expect your passengers to be suitably impressed.
Cameras at the ready, fjord fans. Today is all about admiring Norway’s most iconic natural wonders, from exploring Aurland to gliding through the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord on a cruise. This scenic fjord, one of the narrowest in the world, is widely considered the most spectacular arm of the Sognefjord.
Setting sail from the village of Flam, your adventure begins by crossing the Aurlandsfjord before entering the magnificent Naeroyfjord. Wildly beautiful, its narrow walls reach dizzying heights of 5,577 ft above sea level, with a width of around 820 ft at their narrowest. For lovers of dramatic scenery, cruising through the Naeroyfjord is up there as one of the world’s best boat trips. A journey both little ones and grown-ups won’t forget in a hurry.
Say farewell to Aurland this morning as you buckle up for the two-and-a-half-hour drive west towards the coast and the small village of Osoyro. Along the way, you’ll drive past more dramatic landscapes where waterfalls, streams and mountains line the roadside. There’s also the option to make a pit stop in Voss en route for a rafting trip along the river – think gentle rapids, calm stretches and family fun.
Arriving in Osoyro on the shores of the Bjornefjord, check into your hotel and home for the next three nights. This small fjord-side settlement is the last stop of your Norwegian adventure, so spend the rest of today soaking up the scenery and strolling the shoreline before a delicious dinner of seasonal specialities.
Nestled among fjords, islands and islets, Osoyro lends itself to an array of outdoor activities and family adventures. Swim, kayak, hike and cycle over the last two days of your trip, as you make the most of every moment in Norway’s glorious outdoors.
Don’t miss a hike to the summit of Borgafjellet while you’re here. From the village, the ascent is easy (if legs are a little tired or your young hikers are a tad grumbly, you can also drive some of the way). Whichever route you choose, it’s a moderate hiking trail that’s relatively accessible for all ages and rewards you with spectacular vistas once you reach the summit. From the top, soak in the panoramic views over Osoyro, Tysnes, Fusa, Fitjar, Tosdalsfjellet, Linken and Byfjella – a sweeping landscape you’ve no doubt come to love.
After a fun-filled family adventure around Norway’s fjords, it’s sadly time to return home (ready to tell tales of your trip to the rest of the class and office).
Bergen Airport is only a 20-minute drive from Osoyro, so after a leisurely start, make your way to the terminal and say farewell to your trusty hire car. The journey back to the UK is a speedy two hours, the perfect amount of time to plug into our specially curated Norway playlist and reminisce over the last ten days.
