The aroma of spirituality.

Now for a destination Original Travel look forward to introducing in 2012 - Nepal. This beautiful country is full of beautiful and dramatic wilderness, reached via days of trekking, but we also love the Buddhist temple at Swayambhunath outside Kathmandu. It couldn't be less off the beaten track - in fact it is the first or second most important pilgrimage site in Buddhism, according to Newars and Tibetans respectively - but no less magical for the multitude of the devout and the simply curious that make their way here every day.

The road to the hilltop itself leads past Hindu funeral pyres where the unmistakable sickly sweetness of burnt flesh represents one of the least pleasant smells imaginable, but which makes the soft and welcoming aroma of incense at Swayambhunath all the more welcome.
