Perched high on a ridge of red sand dunes, Wolwedans Dunes Lodge consists of nine individual chalets strung out on either side of the central lodge building.
The spacious chalets are built on wooden platforms, raised on stilts, and one side is made up of canvas blinds that open up to allow unimpeded views of the spectacular scenery - you can lie in bed and watch the dawn break over the mountains.
Each chalet comes with an en-suite bathroom and private veranda. Wooden walkways link the chalets to the main building, which has a homely and stylish atmosphere and houses the dining room, living room, tea pavilion, outdoor fireplace, a number of sundowner decks and a small, shaded swimming pool. The kitchen produces excellent meals and there is also a wine cellar built into the dunes where you can select your own bottle or even enjoy private dining. In front of the lodge is a waterhole where springbok, oryx and sand grouse regularly come to drink.
Set slightly apart from the rest of the lodge is the Mountain View Suite, which offers maximum comfort and serves as a home from home for those seeking extra privacy. It has its own dining room, the best view of any room on the reserve.
Activities from the lodge include guided game drives and nature walks. Hot-air ballooning and scenic flights are also available, or you can simply relax and enjoy the peace and grandeur of the desert.
Ask to have a night in the stargazing bed built into the main veranda, which provides a wonderful sleep-out venue.
