At the foot of the Naukluft Mountains, 124 miles south of Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek, the Sesriem River has carved out an impressive canyon in the sedimentary rock. In the middle of a desert landscape, between dunes and rocky slopes, the Sesriem river only flows here a few days a year during exceptional rainfall. It then continues its work, digging into the rock a canyon that’s about 98 feet deep and half a mile long. On a visit to Sesriem, you can wander the canyon’s floor and – if you’re lucky – admire the ephemeral lakes that appear in the middle of the desert. A trip to Sesriem is also
an opportunity to explore the desert and admire the vast red dunes and stretches of stones.
