HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Ski under the midnight sun in June > Five peak heli-skiing > Stay at the Ice Hotel > Spa and food in Riksgransen

Deep in the Arctic Circle, Riksgransen is Europe’s northernmost ski resort, where skiing continues well into June, and the midnight sun barely sets.

Right on the border with Norway (Riksgransen means ‘border town’), the resort is just a two hour drive from the extraordinary Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi. Skiing starts in February, although there is snow long before then, just a distinct lack of daylight.

There are plenty of runs for the less advanced skier, but Riksgransen really prides itself on the quality of its off-piste skiing. For years Swedes have enjoyed the near perfect off-piste skiing conditions. Knee-deep light powder is all but guaranteed in Riksgransen.

The Riksgransen Hotel has just built a spa to help ease tired muscles after a day’s exertions, while the restaurant has been voted one of Sweden’s finest, serving local specialities such as roast ptarmigan (snow grouse), reindeer steaks and fresh salmon.

A new addition in town is the Meterologen Hotel, a 4-star ski lodge with just 14 rooms, a restaurant and bar.

The heli-skiing is extensive, with numerous peaks within easy reach of the resort. All the guides are expertly trained, and the pilots know the surrounding area intimately. As many as five peaks can be attempted in one day.

As the almost permanent darkness of winter recedes, skiers make the most of the extensive slopes and, by midsummer, the sun barely drops below the horizon. On some nights in June the lift system is open until one o’clock in the morning. The surrounding wilderness allows for alternative activities such as cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing.

The world famous Ice Hotel is redesigned and rebuilt every winter using huge blocks from the nearby Torne River, and melts away at the end of April. Enjoy a cocktail from an ice glass at the ice bar, and stay the night on reindeer skin-covered mattresses on an ice bed.
