With year-round mild blue skies, Sardinia is a great place to enjoy a peaceful romantic getaway out of season. Travelling out of season (in spring, autumn or winter) also makes it possible to embark on a one-of-a-kind experience: staying in a historic lighthouse. Built by an Italian navy merchant in 1856, this majestic lighthouse has long been the home of a couple of guards who keep watch over the ocean. The lighthouse has retained its maritime vocation, lighting up the waves every night as it did 150 years ago. But there is a twist: it’s now possible for travellers seeking true disconnection to call this unusual place home. Settle in for four nights in this beautiful lighthouse-turned-hotel. There are six elegant suites, four of which are small apartments nestled in the old cisterns.
There is also an infinity pool stretching into the horizon and an ancient olive grove in the garden. When it comes to eating arrangements, there is no timetable or fixed menu; the chef creates personalised dishes based on seasonal produce and your desires. And then there’s the location. You’ll be staying in the heart of a nature reserve in the extreme south of Sardinia, an hour’s drive from Cagliari and just steps away from wild beaches.

Your Trip:

Your holiday begins with a quick and easy two-and-half-hour flight to Sardinia. On arrival, you’ll collect your rental car and drive to the south of the island, hopping into a private shuttle for the last couple of miles through the rugged terrain of the nature reserve. There will be a bottle of sparkling wine waiting for you in your room to celebrate the beginning of a memorable getaway. You can also enjoy a one-hour massage to relax and unwind after travelling. Your itinerary is free to organise as you wish. You can spend your days relaxing in the wild beauty that surrounds you or, and, when you’re ready for some action, our clued-up local Concierge can help you arrange some exciting activities.

WITH A FEW EXTRA DAYS… THE HILLS OF OLIENA

Nestled between prickly pears and bougainvillea is a charmingly-traditional inn that showcases the hospitality and beautiful customs of Sardinians. Everything here tells a story of the island: the walls, the furniture, the kitchen. And then there are the rooms: cosy cocoons decorated with driftwood, embroidered fabrics and local art. Dinners are based on regional products and served in a 17th-century courtyard. Depending on the season, you can enjoy beans with mint, pasta with asparagus; cream cheese soup; local game and potatoes; and honey cakes. The surrounding region offers lots of fun coastal activities, including kayaking in beautiful springs.
