The former home of gazillionaire John Paul Getty, La Posta Vecchia is a beautiful luxury hotel right on the sea in Ladispoli, just 25 miles from the centre of Rome.
There are just 19 rooms and suites in total, each individually decorated with fabulous Renaissance furniture, portraits and antique wall hangings, as is the rest of the hotel, lending the entire place an extremely elegant feel.
The Cesar restaurant is one of the best in Italy (yes, we know that's a bold claim), with a menu that features beautiful takes on traditional dishes from Lazio and Italy at large, wherever possible using ingredients from the hotel's own organic garden. Meals are served in the high-ceilinged dining room by white-gloved waiters, or, in summer, al fresco on the spectacular terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea, or even in the expansive gardens, near the foundations of a 2nd Century Roman villa.
The hotel's LVP Health and Beauty Club is a shrine to the pleasures of pampering, with treatments all using products from well renowned Florence-based Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. The signature Relaxation programme lasts a blissful two hours, and treatments can be enjoyed in the bedrooms, spa or even the garden gazebo.
Away from the spa, there is a large heated swimming pool, the sea for a refreshing dip and plenty of sun loungers strategically dotted around the beautiful gardens. The hotel museum has a fascinating display of finds from the Roman villa, which was discovered during Getty's 1960's renovation of the property, and then of course the world's finest open air museum, Rome, is just 40 minutes' drive away.
Why we love it
Because Rome in summer is hot as hell, and La Posta Vecchia is the perfect seafront alternative to the sweaty city centre itself.
