Giorgia and Stefano Barbini, the deeply stylish owners of the equally stylish San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge in the Dolomites, have an eye for detail that even we are in awe of. They are purists, perfectionists and now, with the launch of Blue Deer (to the Mountain Lodge’s White Deer), a beautiful 74ft catamaran, they are also visionaries.

Blue Deer is a new concept in luxury lodges. To quote the Barbinis themselves, this sleek boat is 'not a house at the sea but rather the sea as a home' that spends summers sailing around the islands off Italy's coast and winters in the Caribbean.

Between them, notable luxury catamaran designers Sunreef and the Barbinis have created one of the most elegant and downright sophisticated nautical experiences imaginable, with huge attention to detail ever present from the on board fabrics and upholstery to the quality of service from the highly professional crew.

Blue Deer can sleep eight in great comfort in two deluxe cabins and two VIP cabins, with the two deluxe cabins also able to house another couple of children as both have a convertible bunk bed. All four cabins have spacious en suite bathrooms and stylish navy blue, white and aquamarine themed decor. The crew (of four) quarters have a separate entrance from the cockpit that allows guests more privacy in their quarters.

In addition there is a very spacious saloon which offers panoramic views from the comfortable U-shaped sofa seating area, and a well-stocked (there's even a proscuitto slicer) galley where the chef creates high class gourmet cuisine for the guests. On deck there are numerous places to soak up the sun and watch the watery world go by as Blue Deer slices effortlessly through the waves. When at anchor guests can lie back in the netted areas directly over the water and enjoy meals in the exterior lounge.

More active pursuits are also available thanks to Blue Deer's stash of watersports equipment ranging from paddleboards and inflatable kayaks to wakeboards, fishing gear and snorkel/dive kit. The crew will also arrange shore trips to charming fishing villages or deserted beaches on the beautiful Italian islands where Blue Deer spends her summer. Guests can choose to explore the waters off Naples around Capri, Ischia and the Pontine (Ponza and Ventotene) Islands; or Sicily's Aeolian Islands, or finally the coastline of Corsica and Sardinia.

Why we love it

Take the best bits of an Italian villa rental holiday (the food, the beautiful surroundings, the sheer Italian-ness,) and the best bits of a boating holiday (the freedom to explore, the watersports); put them together and you have Blue Deer.
