Those in need of the mod-est of mod cons might find Sierra Lodge a little on the spartan side, but it's hard to beat this place for sheer character.
There is no electricity but at night kerosene lanterns illuminate the rock of the cabin walls and pot belly stoves warm the rooms. The cosy rooms each have two double beds and a private bathroom with hot shower, and the dining room has a roaring fire in a stone fireplace around which you can sit sipping a well-earned margarita after a day's trekking.
The Cusarare River is right next to the lodge, and a walking path leads to the Cusarare Waterfall. Roberto, the manager at the Sierra Lodge, can arrange Tarahumara hiking guides for an additional fee.
Why We Love It
The equivalent of a Kenyan community lodge, Sierra Lodge is completely run by the local Tarahumara people.
This beautiful colonial mansion is now a charming hotel comprising three adjacent haciendas surrounded by tropical gardens and a lovely ramada.
Each hacienda has individually styled rooms, however the original rooms have high ceilings and wooden beams where as the newer rooms all have views over the gardens.
The restaurant serves delicious authentic Mexican cuisine, including the local delicacy - freshwater black bass - and you can choose to enjoy your meal indoors or beside the pool.
Why We Love It
The management hint that the hotel was the original site of Zorro's house. (But since the dashing masked vigilante was a fictional character, this claim should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.)
Perched on the canyon's edge, Hotel Mirador undoubtedly has the most privileged location of any hotel in the area.
Surrounded by pine trees on the upper slopes of the canyon walls, each and every room at Hotel Mirador has sweeping views over the canyon and the rooms have been well decorated with Mexican fabrics and artefacts.
There are fireplaces in each room and each room also has a private terrace from where you can enjoy the spectacular sunrises.
Activities on offer include guided treks down into the canyon and - for the less environmentally aware - trips in gas-guzzling Hummers.
