Sand Rivers is a luxurious safari lodge on the Rufiji River.
Accommodation at Sand Rivers consists of eight open-fronted, stone and thatch cottages, raised up on the banks of the Rufiji with wonderful views out across the river. Each has a veranda and an en-suite bathroom, while the two suites also have plunge pools. In addition, there is the one-bedroom 'Rhino House' - ideal for honeymooners or those seeking total privacy - which features its own dining room, a small swimming pool and its own private safari vehicle and guide.
The main lodge building houses a sitting area, bar and dining room, and a swimming pool in the shade of a baobab tree. Activities at Sand Rivers include professionally guided game drives and walking safaris, fly-camping, fishing and boating on the Rufiji. Fly-camping is probably the most exciting - and definitely the lowest impact - way to experience the bush.
These lightweight safari camps vary in detail, but the basic concept is the same - a distillation of all the best elements of a luxury safari; excellent service by a small dedicated crew, good food and drinks and hot showers, with the promise of complete immersion in the wild. Alternatively you can just relax with a long drink back at base and watch the hippos wallowing right in front of the lodge.
Kiba Point, Sand Rivers' private house just downstream from the lodge, is booked on an exclusive basis and is the perfect base for a Selous safari with family or friends. There are four airy and spacious cottages each with their own plunge pool and a large swimming pool at the main mess.
The habitat in the area around Sand Rivers ranges from open plains to woodland and lakes, and hosts a great concentration of wildlife, from elephant and wild dog to monkeys and prolific bird life.
