Tucked away in the beautiful Kamberg valley in the Drakensberg Mountains near Giant's Castle, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a gourmet hideaway.
Within a decade, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse has earned global renown as a romantic gourmet getaway. Expecting something grand and imposing, it is a pleasure to be enthralled by a place of luxurious simplicity, of hospitable charm that perfectly fits the rustic context. It is understated and elegantly fits into its natural environment.
Renowned chef - Richard Poynton (who, together with his wife Mouse, own Cleopatra) - creates menus with flair and above all - flavour. Although Richard loves dairy products he also loves his organic home-grown herbs, fruit and vegetables. He uses the local producers as well as other choice ingredients. Mouse's original decorating has created a tasteful, interesting and relaxed environment. With only eleven rooms Cleopatra ensures a quiet, peaceful stay. Blazing log fires, an underground wine cellar and a dining room cantilevered over the trout-stocked dam create a rare experience.
Cleopatra overlooks the lake which in turn is surrounded by the gardens. The soaring mountains and meandering trout filled streams make this an unrivalled setting in a region renowned for its glorious scenery.
A visit to the San rock art at nearby Kamberg and Giants Castle is a must. These famous sites have been carefully restored with tourism in mind. In summer the mountains burst to life with the magical flora that is endemic to the area.
Hiking these spectacular mountains you can often see many buck species. There are many endemic bird species to be seen. Swimming in the mountain pools is a must, as the waters are clear and untouched by human habitation. Horse riding is also an unforgettable experience. Trout fishing is available in the river and in nearby dams. The ultimate experience is a helicopter to take you into the Drakensberg mountains.
Caring staff create a team who love to share their enthusiasm and knowledge, making your stay as enjoyable as possible. Outstanding comfort, hospitality, friendliness and exceptional ambience allow you to indulge in the rich and colourful splendour of the uKhahlamba World Heritage Site.
- This is a fabulous place to stay for a couple of nights, enroute to the Drakensburg or the battlefields, and is only 2 1/2 hours drive from Durban.
